Hey, I'm currently working on a simultaneous-turn, class-based tactics game and am looking for some feedback!

The game is kinda like Final Fantasy Tactics + Battleships (but with lots of room for customization!). It's still a bit rough around the edges, so I'm looking for any sort of feedback you can provide!

Some Instructions: Turns are simultaneous and double blind. So, each turn, each player first selects actions for all 3 of his/her characters. Characters will move in order of character speed. It's extremely important to move characters in order of speed so you don't accidentally block the path of your own unit.

Character Creation: You can choose a class, a weapon, and 2 skills for each character. There's tonnnss of character ability combos; I think a large part of the fun is just finding broken combos. Every time you level up, you can unlock a new skill.

I'm interested in any feedback you have, but primarily:
-Is it fun? Do you feel like you have a lot of stuff to play/experiment with?
-Is it clear what's going on in battle?
-How do you feel about the pacing of battle? Does it drag out too long, or is it too short?
-Is there anything that is/was confusing, or you wish you knew before starting?
-Any other feedback, positive or negative is appreciated!

The game file is kinda big (14MB), and the preloader I made seems to be inducing some bugs, so please wait a bit for the game to load. It should say v 7/26/13 B on the bottom right.

Alternatively, go here for a preloader, but try playing the game on index (no preloader) because the game bugs out for some reason with the preloader.

I'm not downloading it but I am curious. First question is first, what language did you use? Is that Flash or...?

The client is in AS3/Flash, and the backend is in Java.

There's a beta section on Kong too though. And trust me, I can already tell that this is better than a lot of games on Kong (possibly worse than a lot too but still)

To be honest the Strategy & Tactics section of Kong isn't that stacked. They're mostly build-and-release clones and tower defences. From your screenshot and gameplay type I can already see it being highly rated there (number of plays is a different monster though, can't really say until you try).

Yeah I was thinking the same thing in terms of ratings. Can't tell until you play it though, now can you? Maybe there's a money grab part he plans to put in or something annoying like needing to hit 4 buttons to do 1 thing >.>

Oh! You don't have to download it. It's completely in the browser. It just takes awhile for it to load.

Aghhhh games not ending properly happens because my code is bad and server stops working. I'll try to fix it, thanks for bringing it up!

I can't really use fastswf because I'm gonna use an external preloader, but thanks for the link for dev Kong :D

rather useful for understanding things a bit more.

Affinity the ai still needs work. In my single player game it moved off 1 mine I planted on top of his character just to go in the opposite direction of my own character (1 on 1 between my archy and him) so he could die on the mine I placed earlier in the game :D

Very well done and very fun. Surprisingly so. Would totally rate 3/5 on Kong atm. UI improvements would make it 4/5. Additional improvements overall probably 5/5.

Just played my first ever game, was nice, totally getting that FFTA feel (one of my all time favorite games) but with a sort of gambling, risk taking element.

a couple of smallish problems/things:

i think that I encountered a bug though, half way through the game, my healing type character suddenly had really limited movement options, suddenly she could only move up and left, it was weird.

I also managed to get 2 characters to briefly stack ontop of each other, I think it was something to do with my solidier type character having the extra movement ability, I dont know how I quite did it though.

I think in the planning stage characters should have the ability to move through each other, its weird that I have to set them up in a certain order just to get them to the right place, but that order doesn't actually matter during the round.

Also I couldn't find the display for what status effects were on my characters, I dont know if I just missed it or not though :p

good stuff though, I can definitely see the potential in this game, and I was already enjoying myself in the first game, so thats always a good sign.

This is indeed like Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. I still have that cartridge. So much fun :D

Taken from the Game Guide I linked in my post above:

Speed
~ Each character has a starting speed.
~ Characters with higher speed move first, so be sure to account for this when commanding characters!
~ Characters get +35 speed every turn if they don't move.
~ Whenever a character does an action, some speed is subtracted depending on the move.

I also managed to get 2 characters to briefly stack ontop of each other, I think it was something to do with my solidier type character having the extra movement ability, I dont know how I quite did it though.

To the left of your character's icon on the playing field is where it is shown, hover over it for a description. The Game Guide also shows these and their descriptions.

Why yes, yes it is. I sort of was... I got destroyed by a player that has been testing for the dev for a while... then I got destroyed by what the dev said was OP. (Probably not a good idea to state that it is OP in public)

I dont understand at all how it helps make legal moves, you can program the moves in in any order, regardless of speed. So the order you set up doesn't matter in terms of moves, but can just get in the way of getting what you want, you just have to redo your order, with no change in the result.

If your characters move into eachother it can end up in them basically wasting a chance to possibly hit the opponent! In a congested area they can often end up running into eachother if you don't plan in the turn order. It has actually saved me on more than one occasion already, and I only played 4 games so far. After a couple games I got used to it and really appreciate it.

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys :D! Most of FFA what said is true, except it's now +35 speed/turn. As for OP stuff, I really want the feeling of "OMG THAT'S SOOOO OP" when you're creating a strat. So, if something's too good now, there's certainly strategies that can deal with them easily.

Uh oh, not the first time this has happened. Do you remember what you were doing when this happened? Did you just select the character in the turn, or did you reset the character?

It might have been interception. Confirmation would be nice, but that's what someone said to me. I'll need to take a look.

Most of the time, if you're not sure what's going on, mousing-over the thing in question might work. That being said, I do like knowing where people get stuck so I can improve on those aspects.

Anyways, thanks for trying my game out! :D

Edit: Oh, and yes.. the AI is pretty dumb. But, they get stat bonuses as you get onto harder levels so that should balance things out :o

I'm going on now. Affinity you might consider putting below the game where you talk about ctrl + f5 to refresh cache.

Cmd (Apple FireFox) + Shift + R

That's the only circumstance where ctrl+f5 doesn't work to my knowledge.
edit: Also, why not a way to refresh the connection from 'connection lost', at least on the login screen.
Also ability to change password. (basic UI thing)

....it hates me. Won't log me on. wow thats fast changing. Nice. :D

Ah, I get what you are talking about in terms of when picking moves, maybe have a tool tip recommending that you makes your moves in the order shown on the right or something like that? just a small thing

I'm pretty sure that the glitch happened on the same turn that I picked interception yeah, and I'm sorry but I can't remember what caused the movement glitch in my healer.

An interesting find. I was experimenting with the 2 links you have for the newest version.

If you load one with the other one already loading you see a flash of it saying some type of error before the browser loads the other page.

MCDayC: Okay, I think I've got an good idea on what's happening with interception. It's only visual, which makes things easier.

For moving in order shown int eh right, could you elaborate a little on what you're visualizing?

Full Heal is certainly bugged. Just healed injured with it and it gave it to the enemy character next to me. >.>

Also, when purchasing characters,when it says 'Unlock for X' when you roll over the name of a character in the list, it might be a good idea to use the space on the right to say 'Need X More'
example:
Assassin
'Unlock for 760' 'Need 315 more'

this shouldn't be hard to program in if you have basic knowledge of how the language handles algorithm (Which I believe you do)

btw I've found this very fitting for playing in the background while I play this game :D

Hmm, I don't have a skill called Full Heal. Do you mean First Aid? (that skill heals injured) Just to confirm, the bug is that it targeted the wrong cell?

On an unrelated note, I was looking through battle history and just wondering - you've won a ton of stage 1 and 2 battles, but never finished the dungeon by finishing the 3rd stage. Is there any reason why?

Sorry FIrst Aid - the one that heals multiple basic status problems. The bug is that for example:

Char A is next to Char B.
Char B has injured. Char B casts First Aid on Char B(itself). Char B loses injured status. Char A gains injured status. ???
None of my chars have a skill that gives 'injured' status. Or if they do it isn't said in the skill description (or I missed it). I still have the 4 starter chars.

I can't move on to the third stage, it instead has a faded 'request rematch' button. I assumed I had to do something before going onto the 3rd stage.

Thanks! :D I think I've pinpointed the problem for continuing stages. I'll upload a new version later today after I make a couple more changes.

As for First Aid.. O_O that's quite a problem. I'll look into it!

Edit: Okay, continuing stages should be fixed in the latest uploaded version (should say 7/27/13 A on the bottom right of the client)

I'm trying to make an account but it won't take my password. I use Capital and non-capital letters, numbers and "-" I get no error message when making hte account but it saids wrong password... =(

I just tried without the "-" and it worked... Maybe add some password error message when using signs...

Yeah say that 'only X X and X are allowed, X X and X are not' like most sites do. Even a label a little off to the side would be fine for this.

Just ran into a bug where the character couldn't move. No status shown to be effecting movement. Possibly the character to the right of her wasn't removed properly when he died. Uploading screeny atm.

Lastly, how did you make the art for this? It's really well done. My older brother walked in while I was testing this stuff out and he was impressed too. Very well done.

btw, you might be interested in this.

-Ythma seems to hard counter Tinkerer. Ice Blast spell can just be looped and win. Probably works versus other chars in 1 on 1 too.

-Just ran into 2 more bugs.
~Bounty Hunter's Hunted randomizer targets his own team's characters.
~Will upload screeny in 1 second, in same game (I hit continue dungeon when screeny was taken) I end up with blight staying on the screen. Clicking chars, going over chars etc. leaves it following the mouse, although it stays behind the character description pop ups.

Character can't move: Did another character die in that location? Did that happen at the beginning of a turn, or after you reset the character? I'll check both, either way.

Big white thingie on the post-game screen (its a scoreboard): That was something I wanted to put there so people could see how they matched up, but forgot to take out when I decided it cluttered it up too much. It's viewable before starting a game, anyways

The art I actually commissioned out to artists I found on deviantArt (I can't draw for crap ). Kai-isolated did the sketches, and Nacyrm colored them in. The animations were made by another guy

Ythma? What's that?

As for the other bugs, thanks! I'll go fix them. The screenies help :D

Another character died in the square to the right (where there currently is no character). Happened at the beginning of the turn and after I reset the character.

Ythma is the name of my red-haired spell loving starter kid

Okay! I made some big changes to my game! I revamped the UI, and made a lot of graphical improvements. I also put in a basic/unpolished tutorial, but hopefully it works a little. I'd appreciate it if any of you could take a look!
