This summer I picked up an amazing Cajon because I thought it would add a nice touch to some songs in our band (and because I saw someone play one during a concert and it looked incredibly fun).
In our rehearsal space we've got a Pearl drum set (from a drummer of a different band) which I play for most of the songs but we're doing more and more songs with this Cajon I got. There are a few extras I acquired for it which are absolutely amazing.
So here we go, I'll start sharing my instrument and ask you to do the same in the posts below. Feel free to talk about what you like or don't like or in what unusual ways you play it.
Schlagwerk Makassar 2in1 Deluxe I absolutely love that the base sound and the high snare and kick sounds at the top can be separated extremely well. It has a really full base drum sound as well, far superior to all the other cajons I have tried out.
+ Show Spoiler +
Schlagwerk SET 75 Heck Stick/Side Kick What the heck is that? Fairly simple. One thing you are missing with a cajon are metallic sounds, which is the reason I bought this construction. You can attach it to either side of the cajon and even take apart the "kick" (which you play with your heel and which sounds like castanets or claves) and the stick (which you play at the little back rectangle at the top with your hands, mimicking cymbals).
+ Show Spoiler +
Schlagwerk Sizzle Board Fairly self-explanatory. I either attach it to my thigh with a strap or to my the side of my cajon (top, opposite of the heck stick/kick). You can play it with your hands or even sticks. Sometimes I just use it as a shaker (or rainmaker). + Show Spoiler +
Schlagwerk Krix This I just attach to my shoe. You put the long end under your shoe laces and use the little hook to make it stay. There you go, cymbals on your foot. The sound is almost identical to the heck stick though so I rarely use them in combination. Warning: Large Image + Show Spoiler +
@ Rehearsal Space You can obviously mic the Cajon for performances or rehearsal. Getting the right settings and microphones takes a bit of trying.
Thanks for reading. Ask questions if you have any.
Now you! Post your instrument!

My friend's shitty old Jackson Dinky that he didn't want anymore. I somehow thought it would be a good idea to drop high-end Seymour Duncans in it, but it turns out that you can't polish a turd. Yes, that is duct tape holding the output jack in place. Yes, it does have volume/tone controls, but the pots I bought didn't fit, so I melted holes in the backplate and stuck them in there. Amp is a Marshall MG50DFX, pedal is a Behringer V-Amp.
+ Show Spoiler +I also have a Vypyr Tube 60 and a Warrior WRXT with EMG 81/85, but they're back at school

That's a sick setup dude. All it needs is a double base. I'm quite jealous. The drum set I'm playing right now has two toms which is rather annoying if you want to play a melodic break. :D How long have you had this setup?

Since March. I haven't been able to practice too much due to work, but I can play a few (easy) songs. Guitars are amazing. I'm still awed by them, after almost a year of playing. So many things you can do and by just...plucking some strings.

Yeah i do. We play mostly classic hard rock/heavy metal covers with a few songs of our own; the song we cover atm are Rock Bottom, Doctor Doctor, Wasted Yeards, Highway Star and Paranoid.
Marshall Valvestates are awesome; i got that one for a ridicolous price (like 180 euroes when i've seen it go for 300+). It's a pity they aren't produced anymore.

I've been playing flute for ~10 years; 7 were in a band, the last three have been with an orchestra. Love classical music. Did jazz band my senior year of high school too.
Yes!! One of my teachers in high school is a rock enthusiast, and he would always refer to me as "Jethro Tull" in class. X-D

I've always wanted to learn how to play the cajon. Is it something you think is doable for someone who wants to self-learn but has no drum/percussion background? I've played the violin for a long time and know about music though.

Guitars are great. Whenever I get the chance I pick up a guitar and try to learn a few things from my band mates. I am really bad though. I do admire their ability to walk around the stage and to move freely and to all kinds of crazy stuff. Can't really do that behind a drum set or on a cajon.
Regarding the many things you can do by just plucking some strings. It's very similar with the cajon. I mean it looks like a wooden box but the amount of sound variety you get out of this simple box is just crazy.

Absolutely!!! (especially if you have some musical background from playing the violin)
It's a perfect instrument for self-teaching in my opinion. The great thing about the cajon is that it doesn't require independence of feet and hands which is something you keep drilling when you play a drum set. With the cajon you can focus on your hands and your hands only (you can add stuff for your feet later if you want). It also doesn't require sticks like a drum set which is another thing you won't have to worry about. All you got to do is hit a box in different places. At the beginning you need to distinguish between four different ways of hitting a cajon to create distinct sounds and accentuations. It's all fairly self-explanatory but I would definitely recommend to at least watch some Youtube tutorials about it.
One thing you will have to train and practice a lot for is to develop different kinds of beats. At the beginning you will find a beat that is quite easy to play for you and you will try different variations of it. At this point it is important to make sure to extend repertoire of stuff you can play on the cajon because if you don't you will soon realize that whenever you improvise that you'll fall back to whatever that really nice first beat was you taught yourself. A great way to develope independence from "standard go-to-beats" is practicing drum rudiments (paradiddles etc.) and trying different genres of music. (I loved to experiment with some Rumba rhythms, DnB and some jazz stuff for example).
Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to share some experiences. Since you've played the violin, I think you have more than enough musical understanding to really improve quickly. The thing about a cajon is that you can take it anywhere to jam with some friends. You know that guy who takes his guitar to bonfires and sings and all the ladies go "oooh... sooo sweet." The cajon guy beats him by miles It's also a great stool.

I've heard of Jethro Tull, but I haven't really listened to them much. When it comes to flute, I mostly follow classical stuff like Bach or Mahler.

yea they introduced an indo made line called "premium" at the price point of the old prestige and bumped up the prices of prestige by 500 bucks, which is a fucking terrible deal since you don't even get nice pickups until you drop 3k on a jcustom

To both of you - do you play in a big band, orchestra or ensemble? Have you heard of the band Jethro Tull? They've got a flutist/singer. X-D
Playing in an orchestra is really exciting. I was in my school orchestra ages ago. I had the best time when we were doing movie soundtracks - absolutely loved it. I don't think I'll ever forget playing timpani for our interpretation of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Do you have a favorite orchestra piece?
