So I've borrowed a ruleset... and I would like to ask you who would win.
* Fight takes place between 1 full-grown, male African lion and 40 midgets * The midgets are unarmed (no guns, baseball bats, tasers, etc.) * The fight takes place in a closed arena (a racquetball court for example) * Fight is over when either a) the lion is dead, or b) all 40 midgets are dead or unable to fight back (severely wounded) * Lion is highly agitated, midgets know there's no way out until the lion is dead (they have to fight) * The midgets are not specially trained to fight (not like the Cambodian fighting ones in the article) but are in average physical and mental health * The midgets are given 5 minutes before the fight to prepare/strategize
Easily midgets, but only if they realize that some of them will have to sacrifice themselves so the others can go for more vulnerable regions on the lion.
Lions usually hunt in packs. They do have a lot of strength, but they aren't the fastest big cat.
Midgets would be easy to pray on without anything to defend themselves.
Forty? I don't know. Lionesses are usually more aggressive than the males and they do the hunting.
A lion would be able to paw them away pretty easily.
It would be hard to corner the lion but if they were able to do that and Lion loses its will because there are so many then yeah I could see the midgets possibly winning.
If not and there's no coordination in circling the lion they be fucked.
Depends. With good strategy the midgets would win easily. If it were dark and they got suddenly attacked the lion could win easily. Chaos vs organization. Its like romans vs barbarians. If u make 4 lines of 10 midgets and move in a huge deathball theres no way a single lion can kill them all. If they all run around in chaos they die 1 by 1

guess the outcome of the fight will depend on this then. will the team be able to find some members who would be willing to sacrifice themselves? if not, they would probably fail from lack of coordination and teamwork. if they could find some willing to sac themselves.... well to me, that's pretty improbable....
maybe the group will succumb to groupthink and decide to beat up four of the wekest midgets and throw them out as bait for the lion while they set uo and form a ring around the lion to execute their attack.
5 minutes? The midgets are so fucked. 40 random people would be hard pressed to form ranks properly in 5 minutes, let alone organizationally equip themselves to fight anything that can easily kill them in seconds.

That aside, lion wins. What can midgets do? Kick, punch, yea sure, they are midgets and the average midget leg is 60cm long and the average midget arm is something like 50cm long, which is kind of dangerously close to the lion, and forget biting since they'd have to be at point blank range to do so and the lion would just knock them out with 1 hit.
Also, lions are used to fighting off hyenas after catching a meal, and by hyenas I mean 4-5 of them surround 1 lion. If you substitute 1 hyena for 10 midgets, well then not only are lions used to it but they'll handle it easily.

On one hand, 40 midgets is a huge number and the lion will be surrounded completely.
On the other hand, like a big mass roach ball in sc2, most midgets won't have the range to hit the lion and will clump. They also won't be able to hit at the same time, most will have to be idle.

Ok, so mr. Lion decides to cleave some midgets, imagine 5 midgets or so dieing by a few rapid claw movements/bites by the lion. There's 35 trained midgets there who knows the lion dying is the only way to survive, notice the word trained.
Since they also know there's no way out except if they kill the lion there's more than enough surface area to attack the lion on without the lion being able to defend all places at once.
I cannot imagine 40 midgets losing to 1 lion. Maybe 2-3 lions or less midgets to make it more interesting.
What do you think that happens when the lion locks down on one midget with his teeth, the other 39 will just stand there in a line to wait for the lion to finish? But I'd hate to be one of the midgets, because a good part of them will get injured severly before the lion gives up.

as for being too afraid to fight, the conditions specifically state that the midgets know they have to fight. i'm basing my position that they actually do fight even if they do it poorly.
the midgets would have to use teamwork, the combined weight would be enough to pin the lion to the ground then they would proceed to either a) bite open the lions jugular vein b) strangle the lion although this would be harder since i think midgets arms might be too short and to weak c) repeatedly kick the lion till internet bleeding causes it to die.
Midgets win by default. The lion would grow tired from killing them, and of killing them. They could all just disperse around the court once the lion is tired.
There is absolutely no way in fucking hell that the midgets would win. A lion could probably kill 40 untrained fully grown non-midget men. Lions are furious balls of death, insanely strong, and they can dart around - therein avoiding the ridiculous idea of the midgets being able to jump on it in a coordinated attack. Every time the lion touches a midget, that's a fatality or a serious wound. Every time the Lion gets punched or kicked, that's a barely registrable stroke. Lions can survive gunshot wounds, they could definitely survive midget punches.
If all the midgets are coming at the lion from one direction, I think the lion would win. It's much faster, has very long reach, and could probably swipe several midgets at a time.
If the midgets are allowed to start with a surround, they have a good chance. Their combined weight is probably about 1600 kg, to the lion's 250 kg.
40 midgets couldn't possibly lose that, doesn't matter if a lion is infinitely much stronger than the midgets, 40 is still way too many to deal with at the same time.
Also, somewhat related. Would you rather fight a cobra without your hands or a tiger with a bat?
Midgets would win if they did what I say. 8 after each leg, and 8 after the head. Each midget only focus on holding one part. Even if the lion somehow manages to mangle more than half of the midgets in a short amount of time you still have 2/3 midgets grabbing onto each limb and head. From there they could pin it and pummel it to death. I don't think a lion could fling off the weight of 15 midgets once they grab on.
If the midgets were organised they would win, but I don't know if they ever would be. They don't have training to stay calm and that 5 minutes of stratagising will go out the window the second the lion attacks.
Also a full grown lion is huge and extremely tough, I don't think punching and kicking would do anything and even it was doing damage the lion would contunue to fight until it physically couldn't any more.
With organisation they should be able to win though, 35 midgets must be enough to pin a lion down if it was distratracted by trying to eat the 5 sacraficial ones, and then they could eventually strangle it.
There is no way that forty midgets can accomplish in five minutes what professional drill takes years to accomplish in an army, and even then hardened soldiers buckle and run when isolated or exposed to direct artillery fire. A lion prancing into their midst would have the midgets scatter like butterflies.

Give the midgets weapons, they win no probs but without weapons? Humans SUCK at fighting without our trusty weapons, a Lion has built in weapons. A Lion can cave in a fully grown humans chest with one flick of its paw, it has teeth that can rip through flesh and retractable claws that do the same.
Unless all the midgets managed to jump on its back at the same time and thats frankly near impossible since the midgets would barely be tall enough to jump that high (a fully grown male Lion is about 4 feet tall at the shoulder, and can be up to 9 feet tall when standing on hind legs) especially when you consider that they would have to pile up on top, a highly unlikely feat. The Lion is much much much stronger than the strongest human while midgets are weaker than an average human. Lions have a much higher pain tolerance and tougher skin. I could carry on but i digress....
The Lion could easily kill 5-10 midgets with a few of swipes of its paws, or at least incapacitate them. A few more swipes and theres another 5 gone, and another 5. Lion wins nearly every time.... its simply better built for killing than humans.
You could probably put a Lion in a room with 40 fully grown average Humans and it would still come out on top if it could avoid being jumped on by too many at once.
Midgets win if they have the right mentality and strategy.
They have to go for it, immediately without any second thoughts. If they don't act quickly their numbers will dwindle and they lose their pack advantage, then the rest would get torn to shreds.
I reckon though if 40 of them just went straight for it they would win, though it's definitely a close call.
Lion, hands down. Not even close. Sure the midgets can surround and maybe even grab/touch the lion; but the sheer power of the animal can/will move any tiny object from it's desired path. Plus a lion can survive kicks from a zebra, gazelle, etc. Most humans will sustain incredible injuries from an incident like that. Sure you start off with 40, but that number will get quickly twiddled down as the lion does what a Lion does. Also it depends on the kind of lion we are talking about. A lion that fears humans or a lion that doesn't fear anything are two drastically different animals. Seriously read Death in the Long Grass by Peter Chapstick if you want to read some crazy lion stories from a man who lived them.

If the midgets fight "selflessly with one mind like zealots in a deathball" then they could do it. But there is a huge difference between that and what would actually happen: 40 incredibly weak humans fighting to survive against a lion. Against even mid-size creatures not known for fighting prowess such as the larger monkeys, there is literally nothing you can do. They are above and beyond what you could ever hope to fight against successfully. All you can do is pray to your god that they leave enough of you attached to your bones so that you can at least breath without a machine for the rest of your life. A fully grown lion? A death machine ripped from your darkest nightmares here to deliver you to your maker? Not in your wildest dreams.
Humans have teeth too you know. Latch on and start biting its neck, face, genitals. Jab fingers into eyes, etc. Keep in mind that these are extremely desperate midgets who'll pretty much do anything to survive. A mouthful of blood is a small price to pay for denting the lion.

if they just bum rushed the tiger, midgets would win. They can grab, bite, jump on top, etc. They would have to be fearless to accomplish this though. Even if they knew the stakes, i don't think they can muster up enough courage to make it work.
I don't even think the lion would easily be able to kill all the midgets without being tired even if the midgets didn't even harm the lion. 40 is large number and predators like lions aren't build for long drawn out struggle the way humans are.
The lion would win. A 200kilo beast, pure muscle and bones, with paws bigger than a midgets head. One bite can easily crack a midget neck inhalf. It wouldn't even be close at all. Even if all the migdets attacked at the same time, the lion would fall on the ground and stomp all midgets beneath him.

According to recent studies, it would appear lions spend a lot of time thinking about that kind of situations in order to be always prepared. Yeah, that's what occurs when you have nothing to do because females do all the work.
