I started my Starcraft journey, what is it, almost 2 years ago i guess, right around when it started. I thought it was the best strategy game of all time. That is of course until I set my eyes on Brood War.
I did think it was the better strategy game of the two, as it focused more on positioning, map control and mechanics than its newer counterpart.
Although i started out with SC2, in the end I focused much more on brood war. There were so many legends, so many strategies and a wealth of information on liquipedia.
Watching the last OSL finals of all time did get me a bit down, and im sad there will be no continuation of BW. But im sure everyone is. I'm also certain its something that had to happen.
Gaming is a completely new area of sport that we are experiencing for the first time. We rarely have to deal with new versions of the game. Infact....i can't think of a game that has changed where the pro's have had to adapt, save for street fighter which changes all the time, and FPS like cod and halo. This is the first time we have had to change games, and of course there will be nostalgia.
Some people will switch over to SC2 eventually, and some will never do it at all. Their E-sports journey ends with the fall of BW. For those people, i understand where they are coming from, and i know i cant change their minds...
But for me, just tuning into ASUS ROG, listening to the passionate voices of Khaldor and Wolf, casting MC, a player that already has an amazing legacy in this game...I feel comfortable letting go.
I know that BW will never truly die for me. Most pros will be switching over, and so will Kespa. There will be the same players, and same companies;just a different format for them to compete.
For me, gaming is about the competition it creates;how the game gives equal tools to all players, and they use them to their advantage to edge out a win.
Of course the game has to be good enough to make it worth the players time, and I think SC2 fulfills that role. I love this game as well...WoL did not overtake BW for me, but maybe HotS will. All i know is that i will continue to watch and love anyone playing this game, because I first and foremost love RTS-the notion of two players using their mechanics and skill to outsmart and outplay their opponents.
As long as the best players in the world are playing the same game to compete against each other, i will be happy to tag along....
Now to pull an all nighter for ASUS ROG! gogo MC!
