I am so pissed. My school are the biggest bunch of stubborn asses in the world. Let me explain.
Let me start with the end of last year. Having achieved an A in my maths GCSE a year early, we were told we would have to complete another maths course, despite the fact that I have no plans to take any maths A-level, or take it on further in my life. As I am a very opinionated person, and given no choice on the matter, I had decided that it was a waste of my time and didn't try at all in the subject all year (This part is my fault, no questions here)
However, toward the end of the year, some people were offered the chance to not take the subject, as to not have to show a fail on their CV. Due to the fact I was terrible at the subject (from not making any effort to learn) I hoped I would be included in the list. The school decided, in their infinite wisdom, that because I was going to fail due to lack of effort, that I was not going to be able to be removed from the course. I emailed the school requesting to be removed, and offered to pay any fee involved. They denied this request. Upon finding out I would have to complete the course, and not wanted a fail, I started taking a maths tutor, in the hopes that I could learn enough to get at least a C in the subject.
Come exam day, I completed everything I could (reasonably well) but there was a lot of stuff I couldn't do, so I had a lot of spare time. In this spare time, I decided to write a little letter to the exam board which went:
I don't want to even take this paper. The school has forced me to, even though it is a waste of my time and I am going to fail anyway. I've already completed my maths GCSE, and for me, taking maths on any further is a waste of my time, and I am going to fail anyway. I asked to be removed from the course and was denied. This is my protest.
Then, 2 weeks later, guess what gets sent home. A letter from the school going: I enclose a photocopy of a page from Isaac's FSMQ maths script this week.
At the exam briefing students were told that annotation and/or graffiti on exam scripts was unacceptable, and given the incident that we reported to you in relation to the Maths Challenge earlier this year (which was meant to be optional anyway, and another case of me being bloody minded and not wanting to do it, and answering every answer on every question of a multiple choice paper), Isaac's actions on this occasion suggest he has learnt nothing from that episode and its consequences.
I would also point out that he appears to have wasted £19.70 of public money by deliberately under achieving in this examination.
Yours sincerely,
C.R.Fox (Deputy Head)
...
What. The. Fuck.
Why on god's earth are they looking through my exam paper. Is that even allowed? Why did they pick on me to read through my answers? If they're so worried about "Public money" why don't they get the fucking prime minister to complain to me about wasting tax money in a debt crisis. Then again, if they are so worried about public money, why didn't they withdraw me in the first place? Why do they assume, just because I wrote a letter, that I didn't perform to the best of my ability.
This has made me so fucking angry, and I want to get back at them somehow. Is it worth complaining to the exam board that they have taken my exam script, before it got sent off, read through it, and sent a photocopy home?!
Assholes.

Look at what they are allowed to do with the paper. Do you have your parents on your side? This helps very much as you won't be played down to a 'dumb kid'. If it is indeed illegal what they did, definitely complain and force an apology from C R Fox. Then you may talk about this test being annulated.
|
making you take the class when you didn't need to was stupid and shouldn't be forced. You writing the letter on your exam paper was even dumber =/ They didn't do anything wrong by taking what you wrote and reacting to it though.
Sounds like a strange system though. I'd follow up by sending a real letter expressing how upset you were during the exam to the school board and maybe calling them as well.

Yeah, parents are on the "I agree with you, but for the sake of education, its best to play the "sorry I was annoyed" card, as I want to go here for college.

Write letters to the principal, all the school board members, and all the important people. Ask them to do something.
|
I've written an email to OCR (the exam board) to find out if what they did is actually allowed. If it's not, I'm going to do everything in my power to get back at the school.
|
I must be missing something; from the letter they say no graffiti or annotations are allowed, so doesn't that mean that they're allowed to look through your exam paper (and those of other students) to ensure that none of that has occurred? I mean wouldn't they have to, at some point, in order to enforce that rule or observe whether its being violated?
I'm not sure what kind of exam this is, but either a computer hooked up to a scanner (for multiple choice exams) or a person would need to go through it to mark it (obviously). So if they come across anything that could mess up the scanner (graffiti?) or any "annotations" you put in while they're marking your exam, then they would have to notify the school officials in charge. I don't think its anything personal; you put in the "annotation" so you get the punishment.
I don't know if "getting back at them" is going to help things. If you want to go to college etc. its best not to have any outstanding problems on your school record, so I guess I agree with your parents.
I feel like you should have gone to the principal or teachers earlier and explained why you felt you should be allowed the chance to skip the subject. If they explained that your grades don't qualify you for that, you can explain that the reason your grades were so low is because you had very little motivation to take math in the first place and felt you were being forced into it, but your previous results show that you are more than capable of achieving a strong grade. If you got your parents to come with you to talk to the principal directly on these points, then I am confident something positive would have happened. It definitely seems unfair though, I agree with you there.
But for now you just have to accept what happened and move on, don't make it any worse .

Man, no offense, but you're coming off as a pretentious child. I'm assuming this is the UK version of high school? We all have to do things we don't like, and by you being immature about the situation it's going to make it worse. For instance, in college/university you'll have to take plenty of courses that do not pertain to your major. Get over it, it's a single class, that if you had applied yourself would have been rather easy. As a person that slacked of in Hs my only recommendation is this: grow up, take care of business and celebrate another day. You might not think it is important, but it is.
Edit: Now that I'm home, and not typing from my phone. In High School, specifically my senior year, I skipped 92 days. I was much like you, except I applied my bullshit toward every class. I didn't need school is what I thought, but when I got to college/unversity it all changed. Yes, in HS they will give you a hard time, and possibly castrate your soul if they could, but once you get to college you will have nobody sitting next to you. You're going to be alone, angry and regretting what you did in HS. It's not that the class doesn't suck or that it is important, but rather how you handle the situation. College hit me like a bag of bricks because for once in my life I didn't have a single person telling me what to do, how to do it or where to go with it. If I had not of slacked off in HS, then my college experience would have been a million fold easier.
Take it from me, take the class, pass the class, then go party.

From your story it seems like the option of dropping the course only presented itself after you had already been non- participating, right?
I'm kinda with ranshaked on this one, it's impossible to avoid doing things you don't like in education and life. School is just as much about developing your character as it is about grades, not making mountains out of mohills is really going to be a useful talent toi have in the long run.

How old are you? When did you learn to offer bribes to your school?

I'm assuming you're still in middle / high school where everyone have to take classes they either don't like or will probably never use after they graduate. The latter being questionable knowing that most of us don't even know what our future will be. Given this, you're not special nor is yours a special case, the "I won't use this shit so I won't give a shit" excuse has been heard many times in many generations, countered by "since you don't give a shit, why should we give a shit?" by a higher power (in this case, your school).
I'm glad your school is going to fail you for this course. You have every right to be opinionated of course and so does having the right to fail a course on your own will, which gives your school every right to fail you regardless of your opinion.
What is special is that of the many ways you could've protested, you protested on an exam to those who probably either don't care about your case or has nothing to do your case. That is just brilliant here.
I also found this part hilarious:
Why do they assume, just because I wrote a letter, that I didn't perform to the best of my ability.
Maybe because of what you wrote in the letter?

Maybe because of what you wrote in the letter? Bad isn't the same as not trying though. I dunno, I know the complaint was pointless in the first place, but I just don't understand what made them want to look through my test paper in the first place.

Maybe I'm too quick to make assumptions, but having done both of these exams several years ago your refusal to even attempt them just seems like laziness.

Agreed, OP you're coming off as highly lazy. There's gonna be SO MANY more instances in life where you're gonna have to do something you don't want to, but for the sake of your own life, you're gonna have to do it. Its better to learn your lesson now than later. Don't make the mistake so many do, just because you feel entitled to something. Nothing is ever that simple.

No offense, but you sound like a pretentious little brat, and that's when I'm hearing your side of the story.
You should have sucked it up, taken the class, and done your best in it. Especially in high school. The fact that you didn't try in the class and are now complaining about getting a bad grade is impressively immature. Also, considering that this seems to be repeated behavior on your part, I'm not surprised at all that the school might have singled your test out to check.
It's even sadder that you think you're in the right and are want to get back at them. Honestly, if I were them I would just give up. I don't know how schools are monitored in other countries, but if I were the school's administration, taking the hit from one student on my stats is worth not having to deal with them, and they're only hurting themselves.

Sorry, quickly quote the part where I complain about getting a bad grade? I complain that the school is going through my test paper and copying out parts of it to send home.
