While the "macro better" advice (if you want to call it that), certainly applies to the very low leagues (bronze through say gold), I don't think you can get to Master league anymore through just straight macro. This may have been true 6-8 months ago, but I don't think it is anymore. I'm a high-master turned mid-master league player (I don't play as much anymore), and even at mid-master (I get matched with top diamonds sometimes) just macroing would never cut it. This is with Protoss, which has arguably the best "sit there and build stuff" deathball. If you tried that in any single match-up, bad things would happen. Against zerg, they would take a fast 3rd, and deny your third with mass roach(or possibly use a muta-ball of doom to contain you), ending the "sit there and macro" game pretty quickly. Trying to do that against terran would lead to either the terran taking a much faster 3rd than you, or them doing strong 2 base aggression and picking you apart with drops/pushes. Again, I've seen even high diamond players do these things. PvP would be a some what similar story, however on certain maps you may be able to get away with the "just build stuff" strategy if you are doing colossus. This is provided that they don't do a really aggressive blink stalker or stargate build, however. All the matchups now require a certain timing of aggression in order to stay in the game at this level. So, no, I don't think it will work, at least not with Protoss, and I don't think it would with any other race. I don't see you getting passed low to maybe mid diamond (about where you are at now) with this method.

I don't see you getting passed low to maybe mid diamond (about where you are at now) with this method. I am inclined to agree with you. My experience from playing high diamond and low masters level players has been similar to yours. However, so many players make this claim all the time, that it begs testing. I think it is obvious that if you put zero pressure on in every matchup that this won't work, so I have incorporated push timings and pressure timings into my builds. However, my success will not be judged on the effectiveness of these timings at all, and I am resolved to play very safe and not force risky trades in the faith that good macro is what will ultimately win me the game.
