At least for dead, ancient languages, you know that if you keep at it, you'll eventually know all there is to know about it (at least insofar as everyone else knows about it).

A good friend of mine came to the states at 14 from Asia and has a grasp of the English language at least as firm as that of my own. So while it's difficult, it is by no means impossible.
