What would this blog be about? It will be about learning to look at the bright side of things when you feel bad about anything related to gameing.
Let me introduce myself,
I'm broski, a long term gamer, wich includes recently WoW, SC2, BF2 & 3 and the GTA franchise on a console. I'm a fairly unlucky, yet passionate gamer, striving for improvement.
How I got hooked on SC2
At first, I didnt have any appeal to the game, I did play various RTS games before SC2 but I had no idea how competitive SC2 actually was. Dureing WoW cataclysm beta, I saw a video of Totalbiscuit on MMO champion, wich I subscribed to. When exploreing hes channel, I saw SC2 videos on there, hes infamous 'I suck at starcraft" series.
I watched every single video of that serie, I had no idea what was going on in the videos but yet it was entertaining, so eventually I gave it a shot and bought me a copy.
When I first started playing... oh dear god, I was amazed with how hard it was. And that made me play more because it was an experience in gameing I had never seen before.
I held back from laddering due to being afraid of loseing, and watched pro games and tournaments to learn more first, I did not feel comfortable with just bashing my head against a brick wall and makeing slow progress.
After a certain amount of time, I decided to have my first goal in SC2, getting the zergling portrait, wich motivated me to keep going and don't give into my fear. Since I did my placement matches long before that, I was better prepared. After going with a 10:4 Winratio, I felt more comfortable with my play, but held back still because I was uncertain with playing Zerg.
After seeing (Sixjax)DDE play versus mouz.MorroW, I fell in love with the terran race, and I felt that I found the race most suitable for me to play.
After extended practise vs AI for my macro and gameplan, I proceeded to ladder.
I went with the staggering winratio from bottom silver up to top platinum with a 27-3 record.
It was a process of intensive learning, I went with 2 strategies, one for TvP, and one for TvZ and TvT.
Due to this, I got the hang of developing my gameplan since it did'nt change all the time, wich was very important. Some might consider the strategys a bit cheesy, but infact, they are viable strategys to learn build order execution and macro.
For example, I used the 3 rax stim timeing push vs terran and protoss.
I heard its a strategy from back in the beta, but in low leagues, strategys don't really matter, it all revolves around macro wich goes along with gameplan.
My goal was to get the timeing near perfect and have the max amount of units as soon as stim kicked in. I had a backup plan with vikings and ghosts with upgrades.
My other strategy was going a reaper fast expand, into mass marine medivac with +1 timeing.
You might ask, what did you do vs banelings/collosi?
Well, I can safely say that if you simply outmacro your opponent, you will always win with any tactic.
How did I learn to macro better?
As obvious as it might sound, watch replays/tournament of pro gamers.
You will learn alot from those in terms of gameplan, and learn some new tricks and such, but macro isnt something that you will learn from just watching them.
Macro is all about doing things automaticly and planning ahead.
For example, makeing SCV's, you see on replays that they keep makeing SCV's, but that does'nt mean that you will always think every 15-17 seconds to queue another SCV. The game is all about practise, and feeling comfortable with your gameplan. Experience from other RTS games can help you quite a bit due to that reason.
I followed Day[9] hes newbie tuesday video's, and I follow recommend any player to watch and learn from them, as they are a huge step forward in terms of mechanics and decision makeing.
What's the worst moment in your SC2 career so far?
I made an absolutely brutal mistake vs a protoss when I hit platinum league.
I went for my 3rax push as always, he defended it quite easyle due to immortals and sentrys.
So i proceeded to get medivacs and +1 and all that sort of good jazz. I was thinking about makeing a missle turret at my ramp near my natural just incase, but somehow I abandoned that idea. I did my second push of the match, wich turned out succesful, I was happily destroying hes base, and then I noticed that he snuk into my base with... DT's...
I scanned hes main multiple times in that match, at 6 min and around 11, and did'nt see the DT tower, I saw council and a fair few stalkers so I thought about blink, as it turns out, not quite.
I came to the point of a baserace, but I did'nt have any operational orbital commands left because he shot them with hes stalkers. Slowly but surely, my army was being sliced to pieces to the point where I GG'd.
What I learned from this?
Always, but ALWAYS make atleast a turret at my ramp and mineral lines.
Note that I'm foreign so my engrish is noticeable.
