Hi guys. My gf and I are staying in Seoul for 1 night and would love it if a TLer in Seoul had an extra room or bed or whatever to let us stay in. We are both 24 years old, from San Francisco, very friendly, clean, generous, and I would hope cool people to go and have dinner and drinks with. We arrive in 12 hours, Jan 16, 7am local time. We can travel ourselves.

Thanks so much and hoping to hear from someone!

Also, are there any recommendations as to how we can meet up with local fans or players? Thanks a bunch!

EDIT: to compensate, we will clean your place while we are there!

EDIT #2--At the airport leaving Phnom Penh for Incheon--I posted this on page 2 as an update after seeing all the replies so far:

LOL. Wow, okay I guess I somewhat expected the replies to be like they are.

First let me clarify my original post. My GF and I are currently returning from our trip from Cambodia. We spent 2 weeks here and have a TWO night layover in Seoul, before returning back to San Francisco. I wrote the original post from our hotel in Phnom Penh minutes before we left on our iPad, which would explain why the sentences were weird and why I just didn't really have the care nor the time to correct everything (I am currently typing on a keyboard on a computer at Phnom Penh airport).

In any case, the reason we wanted to bunk was because we have only $400 left in our travel budget and two nights at a hotel, plus taxis, food, GSL, MAYBE visiting the DMZ, well... you get the reason why we would prefer to crash at someone's place. I get the cynicism, but that's to be expected here I suppose.

We won't rob your shit... that's not what we meant by cleaning house, haha. God, as I write this I am slowly coming to the realization of how silly this all was. The lack of a detailed OP combined with how much was at stake would surely make anyone curious of its legitimacy. But we are real, and reallllly nice, we promise!

Thanks for the tip about the sauna places. We will try to find a hostel or something similar, or a cheap hotel.

Our flight is in an hour and a half so I'll check back every now and again, and again when we arrive in Seoul at 7am-ish local time.

If nothing else, can anyone local to the area refer us as to how to use the subway to get around, what stop the GSL studios are, good places to eat KBBQ, and other things to do in the city besides a trip to the DMZ? Much appreciated--I will edit the OP with this post as well.

Thank you sirs!

So you flew to korea, for just 1 night? and you have no where to stay? Is there a reason you're there or is this just a really poorly planned holiday?

Go to a jimjilbang, a Korean-style sauna complex where you can stay for the whole night. They are abundant in Seoul, shouldn't be hard to find one (unless you can't read Hangeul — Ask the locals in that case.)

By the way I'm curious, what are you doing there for only 1 night?

Don't worry babe, I know these guys on this site. I'll just put a notice up on the internet that we're coming the night before we leave and someone will jump to lend us a room.

couch surfing?

are you just trying to save money? I really don't think it'll cost that much (hoon said 20$), and since it's only one night, just man up and shell out the $$?

I don't think it's about the money, but more about the opportunity to meet new people and have a good time. Sure you could stay at a boring hotel, eating at the closest restaurant that looks semi good, and then see if you can find something fun to do during your 1 night stay.

Or you could meet up with some new people who live in Seoul who knows good places to have fun. Some people just like meeting new people because you never know what it might lead to.

^ You can still meet with people, hang around and have drinks without necessarily having to stay at their place all night.

The hanging out is not the weird part, the sleeping over is. All the more on such short notice.

You'd better check out couchsurfing.org immediately and post in the emergency request thread in the seoul-group. You should start looking for couches way earlier usually. People make their own plans too you know. They usually dont wait all day for a couchsurfer to stop by.
With only half a day left you can't handpick your host anymore.

To the OP, just hire a hotel room or something like that, it's definitely cheaper than anything you can find in the US and especially it's only for one night, why not?

In truth, we originally had a 10 hour layover in Korea, but as a big SC2 fan I changed the first leg of our trip in order to stay for two nights in Seoul, so we could visit the DMZ, taste KBBQ, and for me, go to the GSL studios. We did it all last minute (we just came from check-in at the airport where we just paid to change the flight), so that would explain the eleventh hour plea for a room. I tried to convince my girlfriend that we have enough cash to stay pleasantly, but I'm doing this to ease her worries a bit. Two nights at a hotel in Seoul, when you have $400 total, can cut it a little close.

I wrote a few people on twitter as well, so I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket.

Your tremendous help, or should I call it cynicism, was much appreciated, though.

Thanks, MrHoon. Could you provide a place you'd recommend, not too dingy or far from the subway? I'm unsure of the places I've found on TripAdvisor.

We've only found a handful under $50. We can probably go $100 a night and still live comfortably for two days two nights. Still, I just thought it'd be more fun to stay at a stranger's place, especially one who was a TLer, than just get another hotel as we've been doing for over two weeks now. And save 1-200 bucks while we're at it.

Sleep. Go to a love motel. Theyre pretty much everywhere (particularly in the busy nightlife areas) and are cheap as hell. Koreans call them 'motel's too if you need to ask.

KBBQ. Pretty much anywhere will do unless you are hunting for a culinary orgasm.

There's a French dude who hosts a show where he travels the world with a weird-ass camera trying to sleep in random people's houses. He just asks. And yes, it's legit.

So you might have a chance by asking for a place to stay for five hours straight. Well, you don't have a camera, but you're not a lonely creepy foreigner neither.

Thank you SO much for that GSL studio guide.

I searched TL for "seoul", "trip", "visit", "guide", and many combinations of the above. There was a lot of information I was missing from the threads, and the nature of my OP was very personal in nature, i.e. last minute plea for someone to offer a room.

I just told my gf about the love motel idea, and she said "isn't that where the hookers go?" Surely I will have a hard time to convince her to sleep at those places. Also, very good to hear about the KBBQ. In San Francisco, there are only two places that can truly call themselves such and they're really overpriced, so I'm looking forward to all the kalbi, bulgogi, and dukbukki(sp) we can get our hands on.

Ty again

So you might have a chance by asking for a place to stay for five hours straight. Well, you don't have a camera, but you're not a lonely creepy foreigner neither.

I heard korea was the country where he had the hardest time to find a place to sleep, even harder than Japan, he eventually went with homeless guys iirc.

I actually heard that the worse episode was in my homeland Chile where he almost had to sleep on the streets, but if he actually did that in Korea, then... the worse episode is in Korea. Sorry OP.

The name of the show is "J'irai dormir chez vous".

dude..... koryo bbq restaurant in oakland has the best korean bbq. that shit in the japan town mall is overpriced and less than appetizing. koryo brings out a full on bbq pit to your table (hot as hell) and you cook it up by yourself at the table. i have had korean bbq in asia and koryo is authentic.

yelp link:

just read recent reviews and there is new mngmnt. hope they didnt screw up my favorite korean bbq in the bay area.

Love motels. jung-no 3-ga. $30 a night ($70 fri/sat). ez

edit: you dont specifically have to go to jung-no, theyre everywhere.

alternatively you could just stay up all night pretty easily.

We went to Siem Reap, Battambang, PP, Kep, Kampot, and Sihanoukville, and by far our worst time was at S21 and the killing fields. And there's no way you can avoid it either, since both are obligatory places to visit. It was even creepier (and sadder) for us because when we stepped outside of the S21 compound, there was a guy there who had 100% of his face melted by fire. It scared the shit outta me because he crept up to my side as I was talking to my tuktuk driver, and all of a sudden there was this ghoulish, completely fire-scarred/melted face that popped into my peripheral view. I felt a little guilty for being so visibly shocked that I gave the guy a dollar. >_>

And thanks guys, we are in Seoul now. We arrived this morning and found a decent hotel near Myeongdong. It's pretty central, reasonably priced, and the good news is that we calculated everything and we should be good to last until we leave.

Thanks for all the help! And btw if anyone local wants to meet up/go to the GSL studios let me know! I'm looking to even hit up MBC/OGN studios, who knows

Haha no you didn't.

I wanted to get a hold of you to send me the picture with MMA from Anaheim since he was playing at the GSL the night we went, so that I could have something to say or show to him.

I'll upload some pictures we took at the studios tomorrow morning before we leave for our flight.
