Seeing how I can't find a comic book thread anywhere, I figured I'd try it this way.
Meet the start-up comic book collection of a very dear friend of mine, whose birthday is coming up:
Now, I personally don't know anything at all about comic books. Yet, I'd like to buy said friend a couple of them. I've been trying to find some decent stuff on my own, but it's all really freaky and I can't judge for the life of me what's good and what's bad.
I've been reading that something called 'transmetropolitan' is worth it. Based on the picture posted above, would this be a good choice? If not, what would you buy?
Please internet, share your infinite wisdom with me.

If you are unsure about comics, Marvel/DC ones are usually a safe bet. Those ones in the pic mainly look like graphic novels tho as opposed to comics, so you might want to look in to getting a graphic novel of a saga rather than individual comics.
He seems to like Batman, there are some awesome Batman novels out there... Batman vs Predator for instance ;p
Also I see a few of the Marvel Civil War books, doesn't look like the complete set however, you might wanna look in to that and see if said friend has the complete set?

How much are you looking to spend? I see Absolute Sandman volume 1 there -- if the rest of the set isn't somewhere off camera, I'm sure Absolute Sandman volume 2 would be appreciated. (about $80)

It's kind of hard to see everything there is in there, but going for some of the classic Batman books is not a bad idea at all if you're looking at The Killing Joke, Year One, etc. I see he has Watchmen, so V for Vendetta might appeal to him too. Some Fables books wouldn't be bad at all either. Sin City is, of course, always an option, and Starman is as good as they come.
The best plan of action is, of course:

I second Starman as a very good series.
Other good series are Hitman (DC Comics), Deadpool (Marvel Comics), and the 90's Black Panther series (Marvel Comics) as other great series.

Do they have to be American?
I suggest Parasyte if not. It's a very good manga.

Depending on how much you want to spend you could look to start and/or complete a whole story arc either in comic book or graphic novel form.
There are some major events from the more well-known Marvel and DC universes that I don't see there, including:
The Death and Life of Superman, (Superman is killed by Doomsday and then 4 mysterious Superman 'replacements' show up)
Onslaught (Out of frustration, Professor X wipes the mind of Magneto only to create Onslaught. The world's heroes band together to fight him which leads to the apparent deaths of most of the major super-powered beings.)
Batman: Knightfall (The villain Bane wears down The Batman over a period of time culminating in a showdown where he snaps The Batman's back. The Batman recruits a fanatical stand-in who has no qualms in physically punishing criminals so The Batman rehabs his body to take back Gotham City.)
I don't think that your friend has the entire arc from what I can see in the picture: Marvel: Civil War (A disaster involving a super-team is broadcast on reality tv which leads to the government forcing all super-power beings to give up their secret identities. Heroes and Villains choose sides which leads to government-sanctioned hunting of super-powered fugitives.)
There are other really cool ideas but this should get you started.

If he likes japanese manga style comics "Naussica of the Vally of the Wind" (by Hayo Miazaki) is an absolutely amazing series(7 volumes total) If not, Transmetropolitan is definitly worth it, it's a brilliant series and probably something he'd like judging by some of the other comics in his collection in the picture. ;p
You could also try "Black Jack" (by Osama Tezuka, also manga style) or some volumes of "The Shadow" (Artist is michael Kaluta) if you can find it, that one's rather old though.
*Edit* It might help to tell us a bit of what your friend likes if you know? ;p gritty stuff? mysteries? lots of gore? no gore? what styles of art does he perfer? etc.

Can't be manga, doesn't seem to like it.
General style is I guess gritty/film noire kind of stuff, preferrably with 'the government is corrupt' angles, futuristic storylines but not scifi. Style of art, I have no idea.
Thanks for the help so far, Sandman looks like a good option seeing how it actually looks like a decent gift.

Hellblazer and Preacher are both awesome series that looks like would fall within your friend's sphere of interest, judging by his other comics. You might want to check them out.

Going by that I'd definitly definitly suggest Transmetropolitan then, as it basically has everything you just listed and it's an absolutely amazing graphic novel/comic series imo.
Just go google a review to read up on it a bit. ;p but going by your description of what he likes it sounds perfect for him(assuming he hasn't read it obviously)
