ascending empires: because flicking ship pieces across a board is fun. And the upgrades in that game are like the "you want everything" kind of upgrades. Feels videogame-esque.

If you like Risk, I very strongly recommend the Lord of the Rings version. The original Risk suffers from some pretty serious design flaws, and the LotR version is much more playable.

Stratego rules for 2 player. Otherwise, my favorite is Catan.

I was at some board game meet-up once upon a time where a bunch of people gathered at a bar for a day of games, and one of them was this game that had these wooden prop pistols that you'd point at each other at the start of a "round" and then some card or decision determined whether you shot, ducked (dodging bullets coming towards you) or some other stuff. I didn't get a chance to play it, it got pulled out as soon as I was leaving- anyone know what it was called?

For those of you that play it, doesn't it seem like Windmill is suuuuper OP? when baking bread is so hard for everyone else, they just get free food whenever they want? fuck that shit.

I heard good things about "the munchkins" and it has like 50 expansions so someone must be buying it. Other wise i play "Bang!" it's a card game where each person is assigned a roll and you try and kill each other. Great game, also get the wild west showdown expansion ($8) ish http://www.starlitcitadel.com/games/bang-the-bullet.html

I love this thread, I still haven't done some Christmas shopping.

I vouch for Carcasonne being awesome.

If you like area-control games like risk, I highly recommend Chaos in the Old World. It's an asymmetrical area control game (everyone has different units/powers/etc like starcraft), but it is VERY balanced. It's very highly rated on boardgamegeek and for good reason. Typical playtime is about 2 hours.

If that doesn't seem good to you, here are a few other great 4-5 player games: Tigris and Euphrates, Caylus, Amun-Re, and Cyclades.

Hmmmm.... I could say Monopoly is a good game, but I think almost everybody has at least played it. How about Dragonstrike? Think of it like a beginner's guide to DnD in case you haven't played

Ty for the suggestion so far. Has anyone tried out Steam or Power Grid?

Power Grid is a very good game. The supply and demand and auction aspects are brilliant. You have to play it across multiple sessions with the same people, though, because the metagame changes over time.

I would also suggest Puerto Rico. Great game. Never gets old, really. You need one or two sessions to get a firm grasp on reasonable strategy though before it starts to really shine.

Edit: also, Monopoly is NOT a good game. It's simple to understand and has mechanics that appeal to casual players. It's very luck-based though and the most fun aspect of it (trading) is highly dependent on who you're playing with. It also lasts way too long for what it is.

Puerto Rico is a really fun game. If you like settlers of catan and dominion you'll definitely dig this one.

If you like Dominion, I recommend the fairly new game Eminent Domain http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/68425/eminent-domain , or Puzzle Strike http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/67928/puzzle-strike . They're both super fun and are up there with Dominion imo.

How serious are you guys (and gals)? If you like intense decision-making with multiple resources to weigh each turn, I really recommend Steam. You build a railroad turn by turn, competing with everyone else for rail line ownership and shipping contracts, but you risk going into permanent debt to do so. Sound fun eh?! ;D

Another game that drives many people away: Risk. Of course you know about this one, so I won't recommend it per se. But Star Wars Risk Original Trilogy I can't hype enough. This game is awesome (if you like Risk at all). It is meant for 3 or 5 players. If you play with 5, the Empire and the Rebels have 2 players each who are teamed up but take separate turns. The special rules and cards make for a really dynamic game where who's winning can change every turn the whole game, but it's never unfair because the Hutts can play the Empire and Rebels off against each other balancing the power. Also, if you like Star Wars at all it's flippin fun to drive a death star or "use the force". xD

Oh, and for a lighter game that's always fun and doesn't take too long, Fluxx is worth every penny. It's a card game that plays sort of like Uno on steroids pretending to be Go Fish sprinkled with Magic, with the trappings of an adult swim ad. If you play Magic, all I have to say is combooooooooooooo.

I blogged about one.
This won 'board game of the year'.
You should try Yomi!
A build is not a guess, an estimation or a hunch, a feeling, or a foolish intuition. A build is a dependable, unwavering, unarguably accurate, portrayer of your ambition.
