The original Risk suffers from some pretty serious design flaws, and the LotR version is much more playable.

I was at some board game meet-up once upon a time where a bunch of people gathered at a bar for a day of games, and one of them was this game that had these wooden prop pistols that you'd point at each other at the start of a "round" and then some card or decision determined whether you shot, ducked (dodging bullets coming towards you) or some other stuff. I didn't get a chance to play it, it got pulled out as soon as I was leaving- anyone know what it was called?

For those of you that play it, doesn't it seem like Windmill is suuuuper OP? when baking bread is so hard for everyone else, they just get free food whenever they want? fuck that shit.

If that doesn't seem good to you, here are a few other great 4-5 player games: Tigris and Euphrates, Caylus, Amun-Re, and Cyclades.

The supply and demand and auction aspects are brilliant. You have to play it across multiple sessions with the same people, though, because the metagame changes over time. I would also suggest Puerto Rico. Great game. Never gets old, really. You need one or two sessions to get a firm grasp on reasonable strategy though before it starts to really shine. Edit: also, Monopoly is NOT a good game. It's simple to understand and has mechanics that appeal to casual players. It's very luck-based though and the most fun aspect of it (trading) is highly dependent on who you're playing with. It also lasts way too long for what it is.

Another game that drives many people away: Risk. Of course you know about this one, so I won't recommend it per se. But Star Wars Risk Original Trilogy I can't hype enough. This game is awesome (if you like Risk at all). It is meant for 3 or 5 players. If you play with 5, the Empire and the Rebels have 2 players each who are teamed up but take separate turns. The special rules and cards make for a really dynamic game where who's winning can change every turn the whole game, but it's never unfair because the Hutts can play the Empire and Rebels off against each other balancing the power. Also, if you like Star Wars at all it's flippin fun to drive a death star or "use the force". xD Oh, and for a lighter game that's always fun and doesn't take too long, Fluxx is worth every penny. It's a card game that plays sort of like Uno on steroids pretending to be Go Fish sprinkled with Magic, with the trappings of an adult swim ad. If you play Magic, all I have to say is combooooooooooooo.
