You'll see what I mean by "the movie".
Oh, don't act mysterious. Everyone knows these games are 90% cutscene.
I once saw a picture, which for the life of me I can't find again, that had the box art of MGS4 with "Playable Edition" photoshopped onto it. Pure brilliance.
But even for a movie/game hybrid, it's still amazing. It's definitely only for hardcore fans of the series though.
Actually this is why MGS2 is such an interesting piece. The majority of the mindfuck comes from playable things: the map doesn't work (tells you you are in a "stomach" or a "leg"), the major calls you non-stop to tell you about giants space worms and that he " need[s] Scissors! 61!", so many things that leave the player speechless.
I remember playing through the end of MGS2. It was night time. I had spent hours on it already. Then everything turns insane and my frigging game tells my I've been playing for too long, and I should turn the console off. While displaying false game over screens. While the in-game instructor tells me about his last restaurant meal.
Just. Pure. WTF. It's like the essence of WTF. It's like being in a dark room and a giant chair asks you to be his date on Thankstaking day.
And then, philosophy. My first introduction into contemporary philosophy of the new virtual era. The first serious criticism of mass-media I saw done by a mass-medium itself.
To anyone who has not played through the end of MGS 2. Do it. You might not like the game. But that part is history. I'm actually reading Philosophy of video games, and the epilogue... follows this ending as an example. Pretty sick, I tell you.
I completely worship that video gaming moment. I could sacrifice someone to it.
Yeah.. when I first started playing MGS2 alone (a friend and I would take turns playing it through~) that part you bolded seriously scared the crap outta me I was 12 and at that time it was just so freaky lol~ it was at night too (((((( But as curious as I am I kept calling the Colonel over and over just to listen to more mindfuck stories... especially the part where he was talking about driving or something? That story literally made me go "THE FUCK?" Also if you notice Rose's eyes change to a white / light blue color.. damn so good I love MGS2.
You'll see what I mean by "the movie". But I am a huge fan of the series, been playing it since I was like 6 years old back in '98 or whenever the first one came out. There's a shit ton of cutscenes in the previous games... but MGS4 was a true movie lol. ps. that first video will make 100% more sense when you play through MGS4

I'm gonna agree only with MGS4 on this part lol the others don't even compare to it~ Man MGS is just a beautiful series... just the atmosphere it has it's so good mm..
Also GTR have you ever spammed called people in MGS2? You get some really really interesting stories depending on when you call and how frequent during the game~ especially from Rose LOL. Have you ever used the directional microphone thing to uncover some funny scenes as well? Oh and wtf did they do to Raiden in MGS4? They like completely destroyed him.. not story-wise but character-wise. I forgot why they had a Rose AI too..

All while you're naked, running around heavily armed guards and surrounded by a dozen or so Metal Gears.

edit: I liked Inception but I couldn't call it a mind fuck... Probably because it took a lot of ideas from Solaris (I don't know about the movie, but the book it did) but didn't develop on them as much and so just kind of seemed like a cheap version of solaris with MATRIX DREAMS. lol. and a dumb 'or was iiiit???' ending... hahahaha
actually, Christopher Nolan has stated his inspiraiton for inception was the anime movie Paprika, if you watch it you will see
Ahh..mgs series <3. I actually liked 2 the best(closely tied with 3), I didnt like the feminine raiden too much, but I didnt see that as being a huge negative to the game. It has some typical kojima like speeches towards the end.
One of the best moments in the game is the part where your commander goes nuts.("You have been playing this game for far to long!, turn off your ps2 now! :D"). And also..FISSION MAILED! lolol!
The pacing of 3 is awesome, but you'll need to be a fan of the series to play that game. Felt like a james bond movie or something. I think 4 was actually the worst of the lot, didnt have that single area/lone wolf feel to it, the claustrophobic feel of mgs was one of the best things in the series, so the openness of it felt a little weird.
Never forget :D (Even if Raiden is a total bitch and MGS2 kinda sucked- those parts were the best.) MGS3 was more of a favorite but by that time MGS had turned to full on crazy talk. Still, one of the greatest series of video games ever and a Metal Gear-MGS(1) is a personal favorite.

I have seen Paprika. The romance thing is definitely jacked from Solaris, it's the exact same plot just sidelined because WOWSPESHULEFFECTS (which to be honest is the only reason to watch Inception). Paprika could be called a mind fuck though, I guess. It's more just JAPANLOL to me though (not in a derogatory way, but in a I recognise these themes and can grapple with them knowing they are Japanese way). I also have very little doubt Christopher Nolan wasn't at least a little bit inspired by the Matrix though, considering they are directed very similarly and have similar style in general. Honestly I think he said Paprika just because he wanted to seem cultured lol.
edit: not to mention how much easier it is to compare the Matrix and Inception than it is Paprika and Inception. The 'dream' attacks you when it thinks you're threat. Matrix. The question of 'are you really awake?' Matrix. Really inception is also a bit of a simplified version of the Matrix too. So basically Inception borrows from a lot of different places and simplifies them into something the dulled (by countless contentless hits) audiences of the new century can process.
lol mgs2 was a total mind fuck back when i played it.... i remember wondering whether or not i actually had to turn my ps off..... and when you had to switch your controller to port 2 vs the one boss so he couldn't "read your mind" was pretty awesome.
mgs 2 it bring back ton's of memories , Rose was quite real to me through out the whole codec and the most memorable quote from raiden regarding his relationship with rose was " If you want love to boom send them to war "
