I usually write dubstep songs, but decided to mix it up. This one has a distinctly 8-bit / Chiptune feel but still uses a lot of modern sounds. And I tried a more shuffly 4x4 beat than I usually use (there are 7 total drum tracks, I usually use 2 0_0).

I had a dream where I was a scientist in a laboratory creating and experimenting on a horrible creature, and that's where the name "Specimen K" came from along with the mad scientist laughter and sound of power / lab tools in the beginning.

I've been DJing relatively frequently in my university town, and the crowd response is pretty good (I usually play about half original tracks). Feedback is appreciated, and download/share it if you like it!

Very very cool. Amazing job right there.

May I ask what software you use for your originals? I've been using FL for quite some time now but it's not really the correct program for dubstep it seems like.

I enjoy music making a ton, but you know how to.
Got any tips? Software? Tutorials? Tips in general?

I felt it was slightly too messy and maybe repetitive at certain points, but the main part is absolutely insanely good and I loved the song in total too. Chiptune absolutely works amazing with this kind of electro-ish songs, and the beat for the song was absolutely great also.

Personally, I feel that this a bit closer to dubstep. I do see the house-like themes, but I identified dubstep themes as more prevalent.
Err, I'm not saying it's bad, It's really good (albeit a bit messy in some parts), it's just that I felt it was closer to dubstep than house. ^^;

Its alright but the mastering sounds very flat and the stucture is extremely messy for most of the track. I can't really pick out phrases and its just sounds sounds sounds one after the other. Nothing stick out enough to stick in my head.

Its definitely Electro with a halftime dubstepish break in the middle

Don't listen to those idiots, FL is a pro quality audio workstation, it can do any genre and any sound with a few plugins and a bit of practice. If you're interested in dubstep with FL I made a thread a while back explaining a bit about the bass and can help with whatever if you pm

In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Along with the post just above mine, FL studio is fine. The built in synths for most DAW's aren't that great, but there are plenty out there. Native Instruments Massive is the most popular for dubstep I think, in this song I actually used in Ableton's built in synth called Operater since I wanted more 8-bit sounds. And you can definitely get perfectly fine sound out of FL. It's about experience and learning. I use Ableton Live, so I don't have many tips for FL, but for production general, getting on YouTube and searching things like "datsik bass sound massive" or "skrillex bass sound masive" or even just "dubstep wobble massive" will give you videos. Some are shit but a lot are really helpful. Searching "dubstep FL studio" etc. will also help. Reddit has a good production section too, I hear. And thanks for the feedback.

Most of it is 4x4, and the tempo is 125 not 140-ish. If anything I'd call it complextro, but that's an obscure enough sub-genre term that I think electro house is the most recognizable. However, I'll acknowledge that the half-time parts especially are pretty orthodox modern dubstep. After all, that's what I usually make.

Yep not an audio engineer, so I'm not looking for tips on mastering. This was a quick master that will exist until I send it to a studio.

The structure is very simple, but a lot of the lines are very jagged / abrupt (hence calling it "complextro"). I got the style I was going for, and anticipated not everyone would enjoy it. But I'll definitely concede that it's a bit "messy" because I like messy/glitch every now and then (not everything I write is, I like diversity).

It is a bit repetitive, but that's too offset the messiness slightly. The structure isn't complicated, but the lines are. It's tough to write an absolutely perfect song .

Glad you enjoyed it though. Especially the beat.

This is what would happen until your blew on the NES cartridge to get it to work! Seriously I'm not a dubstep fan but I found this quite enjoyable, you said anyone could use it? How would you prefer credit to be given for clarifications sake?

If you use it in a video just put at the end of the description on YouTube or in the video credits "Music by Khaze soundcloud.com/KhazeDUB." Similar footnote for a presentation. If you play it at a party or something, you don't need to give credit (but let your friend see you iPod if he asks!). If you transmit the file, just keep the name the same "Khaze - Specimen K.mp3".

Whatever is reasonable and allows someone to find the source if they want to. Thanks for your interest, and I love your description of the sound haha.

Some of the parts is way offbeat, fix that, compress your wobble bass more, and then you have a decent track.

Haha thanks. I'm glad you listened to some of my other material too . I really appreciate the compliments. My style is fairly diverse, and not everyone is going to like everything but I like that one a lot too. What I choose to spam depends on my own mood but it was a tossup between that one and this one. And yeah, I might add some more samples, I thought about it too. You can make you own overmind song too (or remix mine!!!)

As far as compression like I said it's a quick master. And I do value opinions but none of it is off-beat... there are parts where there are some intentionally placed thirty second notes, but that's part of glitch/complextro style... I'll take your feedback to mean that it's a little too chaotic though. Which, while I do like the track and won't change it musically, is still useful information to know since I want to make music people like. Feedback appreciated!

I am sorry, if my feedback was in a mean manner. You got to think if you're gonna do a thirty-second notes, it mustNOT be to "muddy" - And it kind of does, with your wobble bass. So I think, if you gonna save it a little bit, maybe compress the wobble a little bit. Again, I am sorry if my first post was in a mean way.

I think its a fine Electro/Complextro thing you have going on. Thumps up for that. :-)

Nope not mean. Sorry if it sounded like I was taking offense! I think we're even talking about different parts of the song. In fact, the dubstep part I think IS a little grungy. I thought you meant the melody lines in the house part. I appreciate your pointing out what sounds muddy.
