So I downloaded broodwar from ICCUP today thinking it would be a fun thing to do since I don't have a whole lot of time to spend at my computer today.
omg is it hard.
After trying to find a game and getting banned from a few lobbies, I decided it would be best anyway to play a game against the computer. I played a zerg computer and I was terran. I decided to go for a double starport build I found on the broodwar site of liquipedia.
I built my cute bases and huge supply depots, and got together what I thought was a formidable army. I spent forever trying to find the other guys base because I randomly picked a map and had no idea what to expect.
Have I mentioned that I thought this game was hard.
The computer had SO MUCH STUFF. It was crazy. I got rofl stopped on like three separate engagements. Then the army came to my base and LOL'd me.
Needless to say, this game is difficult to play and its something that in my free time I'll definitely be working on.

Yeah, the AI is a lot harder to play against in BW compared to SC2.
The BW AI has maphacks, so he can see everything you have everywhere you go. It takes quite a bit of practice of a specific build before it can beat the bot.
|
2 port probably isnt a build you want to do as a beginner lol
|
just wait until they 4pool rush you :D
|
The BW AI feels hard at first, but it can be beat after a bit of practics. Just wait until you get an online game going...
But it's fun as all hell this game. Be careful it might steal your life.
|
With some improved macro, you should be able to beat him. The AI always makes a strong early game push. Hold it with many bunkers, to keep marines alive. After the push, make immediately a counterpush, and it will cripple him severely. Practice Macro after you have beaten him down. Listen, don't neglect your macro, even when you have already won . Just continue to macro, macro, macro. You will be stomped on ICCup, if you don't have decent macro, so practice it against the AI.
|
Grats on your first match. BW is so much fun once you figure out how to do everything. Just do a bit of study and you will improve. ICCup is also an amazing place to get replay of the Mu's you need. I would know, I an a replay admin there :D
Just have fun. don't worry about winning for awhile though.

This too!
|
Haha, it's easy to beat the AI. They only have a few set build orders, so once you figure those out, your golden But playing standard will almost guarantee you the win, check out Liquepedia for tips
|
Play with me. I just started too and I beat the Protoss and Zerg AI! The Zerg likes to go Hydras lurkers lings into mutas, so I generally do a 1 factory expand and just make tanks until the first major wave (it's huge) and then switch to goliaths!
After that, he kind of gives up lolol. Doesn't make anything else.
Playing a Fighting Spirit, it's by far the best map <3
|
You are probably banned from games, because you don't have ICCUP Launcher. Download it from the ICCUP website first before playing.
BW AI is pretty bad actually, once you learn some basic macro/micro you should roll the AI pretty easily. When they rush you, you can easily deflect it by making them focus on one unit and making them run around chasing it while you make more units
|
Against AI .. Building placements > ALL
Try using a circular wall around your base .. its more fun that way. Intensive microing those marines and SCV .. I really like those back in the day
|
Do you have antihack lancher with LAN-latency enabled? becouse if not, it's very hard to find games, since no one wants to rely on his luck while microing.

Although rewarding I agree with Nemesis on that its very easy once you do it once or twice to roll the AI. It ling/zealot rushes are very easy to handle and the barracks rushes die super fast to just one bunker or a couple well placed sunkens. Its always fun to play it though and the SC2 AI doesn't ever macro at all (as in take new bases it does make units and pushes constantly) but the BW AI makes bases everywhere if you let it lol.
|
join #teamliquidbw on irc, a couple here would love to play with you
|
2port wraith is one of the last builds i would recommend to a new player >__> at least you didn't try to sair/reaver, lol
|
The BW ai always goes for a bad pretty allinsh early attack with a weak economy, so you have to keep that in mind while trying to do "standard" builds, which are generally based on your opponent going for more standard, long-term oriented builds as well.
|
I think the BW AI is much much crappier than the SC2 AI. The only annoying part of the BW AI is that it 4 pools you sometimes. The BW AI always does an all-in rush, and then quickly falls apart after that. Usually 5 properly micro'd dragoons will beat just about anything the AI sends against you early game. Mid/late game the BW AI is just terrible. The SC2 AI has way more units than you would ever expect at any point in the game, it consistently has a lot of stuff, which makes it harder to fight.
As for your build order, at your skill level it is the equivalent of going 1 base battle cruiser rush. It is a very bad idea to do, and has a bad success rate until you are experience and skilled enough to use it. Also, 2 port wraith isn't a very good build order either.
|
The good news is you can learn to beat the AI pretty quickly. Just chose a safe-ish build in every matchup (go for some form of 1 rax CC in TvZ) and practice your macro.
The bad news is that there's a long way from beating the AI every single time to winning a single game on ICCUP.
|
Lolololo 2-port wraith as first BO!
Do not even attempt that until you are like B level...it's one of the most difficult strats to pull off in a real game (the other biggie being reaver/sair). You need about 200apm minimum for it to function.
Download the Entropy AI from BWAI if you actually want some practice vs comps. It does multiple builds that are actually real and expands.

Only gosus can use wraiths properly ;d

edit: double post
Four pooled a second time!!
Stupid question: how do you rally workers to mineral patches to make them harvest upon completion?

tell the scv to build something then shift+right click the minerals before it starts buildingl
|
I meant from the Command center. it seems when the scv finishes, it just stands by the patch I rally it to.
|
Ya, you can't rally from your cc/nex/hatch to the mineral patches, gotta manually send them to mine. I once defeated the broodwar AI playing entirely with my feet, though admittedly I did cheese the heck out of it.
|
Workers in BW can't automine, you have to click on them and tell them to mine .

lol.
OK so I I'm getting slightly (note: slightly) better. Managed to keep my money kinda low (note: kinda). Fun game, just hard to figure out at first.

That whole conversation is hilarious! I always wondered what SC2 players who never touched BW would think about not having automine! I played SC1 on the N64 back in 2000/2001 and they HAD automine, so it was a little bit of a shock when starting on iccup two summers ago. You're going to mess up worker placement A LOT before you get the timings down, so don't sweat it!
The hardest part about playing BW (and SC2, for that matter) is learning how to think about it. The second hardest part (at least for a beginner) is improving passed D-/D on iccup. The skill necessary to make D+ is MUCH higher than the skill needed to stay out of D-. I always thought of the learning curve as the side of a cliff. It's a lot of hard work, but once you get the swing of things you'll look back on your struggles with the AI and say "I died to THAT?!".

Lol it's no wonder the AI had more units than you if your workers weren't mining.

Yeah lol
Another thing that was funny was the lurker. I was casually strolling along with my marines and then, "OMG WTF HSFH SFHFSFSHFJ SPIKES? REALLY? ZOMG"
And all my army died : /

I just won my firs game against the zerg AI :D:D Gonna try protoss then terran next.
I need to learn the maps. I'm just kinda aimlessly wandering around lol Frequently pausing and looking at images of them : /

Use fighting spirit, it's simple and once you get to playing iccup you'll find that a lot of people use it

My biggest concern with Broodwar is that I wanna get good at SC2. Like Broodwar is fun, but it'll end up detracting from my goals in its younger sibling.
|
Wait. So Its fun but its more important to play a different game for a goal than to just have fun? Doesnt really make much sense to me - unless you have a serious goal of making a living from sc2.

See I'm a person who likes to achieve the bars I set for myself. A while ago I told myself I'd be masters league by the end of this summer. Whatever that puts me through, I'm gonna get it because that's the kinda person I am - driven to meet my goals. Not saying you aren't, I'm just telling you how I am. Once I get to masters, I'm definitely gonna take some time and play BW and get good at it.
SC2 is a fun game, and so is BW. So its not like I'm sacrificing happiness for something lol.
I do get your point, but yeah I just wanna achieve the goal I set :D:D
|
Why not just get C on iccup and consider yourself grandmaster?
|
I too have recently started my Brood War journey. Maybe one day I will beat the Zerg AI. Maybe one day...
EDIT: I did it!!!! It was like a 45 min match though lol. I hate Lurkers -.-
|
Hurray, I just beat Toss AI!!!! I'm even better than Flash, amirite?

lol yeah you are!!
Well I need to redo my zerg victory. I get to the zergs main and..he had nothing. It wouldn't be fair for me to count it lol.

http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/files/view/iCCup_maps.html Download the maps. Fighting Spirit 1.3 is the most popular map, then I guess Python 1.3, and Destination 1.1. I'd suggest only playing on FS for now, it's a very good map.
Btw, come on iccup and join the "op teamliquid" channel (/j op teamliquid) to hang around. You can play vs the ai online too. And you can obs other people's games or watch replays together (unlike sc2).

I have a question. How do you watch Brood War replays? When I open them from my files it just says Windows does not know how to open this file. What do?

Ah, thanks! Do I need the licensed version, or is it OK with just free iCCup version?

Oh, and imjorman, maybe you want to practice with me or something? :D
