So I found my old copy of FF7 for PC, and let's be honest if you find something like that how can you not install it and want to play it instantly?

It's been years upon years since I last touched this game so probably about 50% of what happens will be lost to me making the game all the more fun once again, though I'm posting here because of a pokemon topic.

Some of you may have followed The AntZ pokemon adventure, I'm going to be doing the same type of thing, except probably no where near the amount of pictures and updates :p More of what I'm after, is people to name things in the game for me!

To prove I own the game

EDIT: By the way, it was not on purpose to have my 1700th post be thing.. but I guess since it's a 7 of something, it works!

The PC version has horrible MIDI versions of the songs. Anyone who's only played PC FF VII owes it to themselves to play the PSX version, which has a far superior version of the soundtrack.

Edit: Or is it possible to play the PSX songs on the PC version?

Amazing game! ♥ Go for it

Name all the characters after StarCraft units (or pro-gamers) or clever play-on words of their actual names (i.e. Cloud = Cirrus or Nimbus, etc.)

Well that's it.

I've had a copy of FF7 for over 5 years and still didn't install it (and no, I've not actually played it before either). Actually it's been years now that I completely forgot about it.

May as well try it now. :D

you, sir, are deprived. the final fantasy series are probably my favorite games of all time. i might even go so far as to say i would give up starcraft just to ensure they stuck around.

might i reccommend starting with FFX? :DD it was my first FF and still my favorite, although 7 and 9 are also outstanding.

10 huh? I liked 10, but there was WAY too much whining from the lead character for me to rank it higher than 6 or 7. The same went for 8, though my enjoyment of the story compensated. I also made the mistake of assuming 9 was a cutesy kid's game. Here is how my thought process went (spoilered for those who haven't played)

"Oh look! They're all little kids! How CUTE! There's the boy with the monkey tail trying to find his way in the world and that adorable black mage making a fool of himself in every. And the princess?! NICE! Look! There's the monkey-tail guy swinging on a rope and a princess running away from her life. What fun they are having! All these cutesy characters and their cutesy adventures! Hey, there's a...doomsday black mage generator....did that guy in the aerial chase just die?...Oh look! There's the big boss man! He's so maniacal, but in the kid-friendly way. Don't believe me? Just look at him committing....genocide?!....yeah...this isn't a little kid's game...

And then it went on to be amazing!

I actually just played through most of the game a few weeks ago. I decided to give myself a tiny challenge by not allowing myself to buy anything (except things required to continue in the game).

Sadly, I misplaced disc 3 a long time ago. Not sure if I'll ever find it.

So, if theoretically I was going to begin playing, where do I start? I went one day and read up a little bit on the story, but there was way too much to figure it all out. Story is important!

I just replayed this game as well...

Might I recommend, in your playthrough, NOT trying to do all the extra quests. I was totally into it when I was playing it, having all kinds of nostalgic feelings, until I decided to get the gold chocobo again. Lets just say the many hours of grinding it took kind of killed the feelings of awesomeness, and by the time I had spent several days on it (a couple hours a day) I just wanted to get the game over with.

Turns out, I had more FF than I thought I did.. though in this picture there's still stuff missing.

Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within, Final Fantasy : Mystic Quest and Final Fantasy XII (All three are lost in my basement somewhere)

Also, yes that is a Lionheart necklace (I actually had it on me at MLG Columbus). At one point I almost bought a gunblade, but I forgot my ID so I couldn't get it

FF7 is fun, the gameplay is pretty straight forward. However, one thing I personally hate about it and, ESPECIALLY FF8, is that you can easily beat it with just attack + Potions/Cure. That's the only thing I hate about it. Otherwise it's a great game, I wouldn't recommend FF8 though unless you play the game for its story.

FF8 being the biggest worse gameplay I've encountered in a FF game. Draw to never use those magics, so you just attack + Heal with pots, but the only guy that has an attack command worth something is Squall. Oh yea, also... gotta love that emphasis on avoiding combat to max the strength of your character... So much for, not.

Just a friendly tip, make sure you pick Barret at the end of the 2nd CD (I think?) so that the chest appears with his best weapon. :D Otherwise you can't get it anymore IIRC.

great, now play through it again, and put in the psx files instead of the ugly pc MIDI music which came with the game^^
the sound is 95% as good as the original PSX tracks.

FF7 FIGHTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm such a FF7 purist I don't think I could handle playing it on anything but PS1. I still have the memory card with all my old hardcore MANY hour saves of FF7.

If I could have the honor, would you name Vincent after me?

My god if I can find my disks, and my old PS1, and a controller when I go home in a few weeks I might have to play through. xD

Sadly I've bought 3 copies of the game, and only MAYBE have a single set of 3 working discs T.T

xD I meant the gameplay of 8. I personally think the story is more enjoyable, but playing that game is dreadful, either you draw tons of magic and waste tons of time, or you play tons of card games. :| I started a new game last summer and beat it 100% with a guide, was so annoying, especially the Card Club side quests. T_T But getting maxed out was fun I guess, felt kind of rewarding. ^_^ At least the leveling process is really fast.

Haha, I had 3 copies also, somehow there was always a cutscene that always ended up freezing like hell so I'd always buy a new copy with my brother. =/ Then he bought it on the PSN... So much better (Well, he bought it because his PS3 can't play PSX games...)

Love the game to death. So many memories, just the thought of FF7 makes me all nostalgic.

You can download the PSX version and play it on an emulator. You can download the PC version too, but you might have some issues depending on your OS and whatnot. Emulator works perfectly most of the time.

I used to have a copy of Final Fantasy 3 on SNES and my cousin dropped it in a bowl of water and the game glitched out... saddest day of my life T__T. FF games always bring back awesome memories. I suggest everyone go out and play one of them if you haven't 6 is the best and nothing comes close. Just a heads up

Do you mean which game do you start playing? I'd say pick a random number between 6 and 10 and play that one. 6 is for SNES, 7-9 on PS1, and 10 on PS2. You can download an emulator and roms to play 6 through 9.

Personally I'd start with 6 or 7 since they're regarded as the best of the series, but any of those titles are fantastic and all of them are definitely worth playing!

LOVED 7 but FF10 I played to keep myself sane when I had a really werid multi sickness period over a month when I was 7ish so it'll always be the best in my heart.

People based 12 a lot but I thought it was really really good and was better then 13 in my book. I really hated in 13 where I couldn't keep the guys I liked and was forced for the first 30 hours of the game into fit teams. I understand teaching me the game but I really hated a couple of the characters and had to grind a lot until I understood how to play them and even then I wasn't having fun.

Anyway I hear that 6 and 9 are good which one should I get first?

Is the PC version any different the the playstation one version, is there better graphics or anything? FF7 graphics don't translate very well, compared to ff6for example.

I loved all FFs I played. 7, 8, 9, 10 and the one in 3D with MMO farming concept, the 12 I think (single player but a lot of components to farm) ?
What I like in FFs is not really the story, it's the end game content and the super boss, in FF10 I spent so much hours in the plains in the summoning arena :D
The end game content of FF7 is pretty good too.

The FF7 version on PC has better graphics and fixes some translation issues that are present in the PS1 version. I like it but the only Gamepad I have is like...serial port (LOL) and it has major compatibility issues with later versions of Windows (although there are probably fixes and patches out there -- results may vary)

FF9 is actually my number one favorite. The whole story and setting is just amazing. FF6 is also excellent, but i would pick 9 any day.

The PC version is bad man The music is midi. You should download the PSX rom if you really want to play on your PC... it is legal since you already own the game, but tbh i would just get a PSX copy or PS1 controller adaptre (they are like £5 or something, a good buy if you play emulated games)

Oh, the PC version also has some bug fixes. I got fucked over by a bug on my first run. Basically, when you have to find the Lunar Harp in Bone Village, you can go to Wutai instead and finish whatever there's to do there with Yuffie. If you then go to Bone Village to dig, the Lunar Harp isn't possible to get, and you have to start the game all over again unless you have an older save to go back to, something I didn't.

God, what a nightmare that was. Running around, digging hours and hours, all to no avail, then having to restart on top of that.

So funny that this thread pops up, and Kennigit mentions FFVII on his twitter recently, when I just popped in my PSX version about a week ago and have been playing on and off! I always rope myself into power leveling toward the end for the Weapons, and grinding a Gold Chocobo, so for once I'm going to force myself to play with a sub-optimal party of my choosing and just play THROUGH the game, instead of spending so much time on the fluff (that I love!) that I never end up actually finishing the game rofl

FFVII and Tactics are still some of, if not my absolute, most favorite games of all time. I play through Tactics at least once a year, usually summers, and FFVII every couple.

pc version has better dialogue and also ultima sword goes transparent

there are several graphics mods that do stuff like change the skins of clouds swords (didnt work for me), and replace most of the character models with ones that look like theyre from advent children (was awesome but screwed up some animations a little and broke immersion sometimes, which wasnt overall worth it if you're emotionally attached to the perfection).

6 is almost as good as 7. it has a very strong mood/atmosphere, probably the most depressing game ever made haha. you'll need a walkthru for some bits probably (actually you might miss some good bits without one iirc)? 9 didnt really capture my interest in any form

dont powerlevel at the end of 6 before going to complete it, had a bad impact on the ending for me (like a guy mentioned earlier in the thread). the whole "lets rush to save the world!" thing gets dampened if you fuck around in a forest or climbing up a tower for 10 hours haha

12 was good, but it was good in a different way. Almost all the games preceding it had a central storyline, a love line, and a mysterious past to all the characters. All the games basically required the world to be saved by some malevolent force.

Wow, I was originally going to write all that to show the ways that 12 deviated, but it actually had a lot of those elements! Still, I never saw the game centering on a few characters or their agenda, but on the NPC's. In a way, each town was their own personality and the major events in the story affected EVERYONE, even the NPC's with a few programmed lines. No love story and characters more focused on their mission than each other. At least that was my take - it's probably a lot different from others, but I digress.

I loved the battle system, too. That and "programming" magic made a lot of the generic farming a lot less time consuming.

Anyway, between 6 or 9 I'd personally go with 6, but both are definitely worth your time, so as long as you play both either is ok.

Agreed. 9's music, characters, and world are just awesome. It's probably the most quirky of all of the games, but it is really great. There are so many places/scenes in 9 that I look back on and I want to go back and visit them just because they were so interesting. Definitely my favorite.

Also, Final Fantasy Tactics is a really fun game that is often overlooked due to its production value which is quite... lacking. But it's got a decent story and some really cool gameplay. It's probably #2 for me.

After that... my favorites probably progress in the order of 10=8 > 6 > 7. Final Fantasy 7 just didn't enthrall me like it does most people, I guess... But yeah, all of the Final Fantasy games from 6 to 10 are simply fantastic overall, in my opinion.

Either this was fixed in the PAL version or you just did something wrong. On my 100% playthrough 2 years ago for my LP, i did it in this order and was able to dig up the harp without problems. Maybe you forgot to enter the woods' 2 screens before you try to digging it up which iirc is a requirement for it to spawn.

PAL versions usually fix up all the bugs, since it's released a lot later. There were bugs in other Final Fantasy games that were fixed up in the PAL release (ie. FFX, you could re-do the entire Home saga if you wanted to but not in PAL).

Ooh, do you have a site where I could get started from? I really don't know about emulators at all...

If you don't want to do a normal play-through, I really suggest an enemy-skill only challenge. That little yellow ball was my favorite materia in my first play-through.

It's very possible also. Aqualung can get you through pretty much the first 2 discs, goblin punch can be used instead of normal attack. White wind does healing and Big Guard is haste and protection. Magic breath and shadow flare take late game duty. It's quite cool to do.

It's a completely different game that way. Even used completely different main chars, RedXIII and Caith Sith instead of Barret and Cid.

Hmm, I did play the PAL version. Perhaps there's more to the bug than what I thought it was, because I did buy a guide when I was stuck and followed every step carefully and still didn't make any progress, not to mention I got the Lunar Harp immediately on my second run. I can't recall where I read about the bug the first time, but it might've been the guide itself too.

After some googling, it doesn't seem like the bug is widely known, but I did find some references to it, including this one:

GameFAQs:
XXV) -Glitch Dead End: When on Disc 1 at the part were you must
go to the Sleeping Forest in Bone Village, go to Yuffie's home
town instead. You will not be able to do anything and have to
start again. [TheEmulatorGuy, Gamewinners, hereafter known as
"GW"] (>>)

Kinda vague, and I couldn't find any better, so it might be a rare bug or something. I don't know.

For the ps1 and ps2 emulators you need a bios which you legally have to dump yourself from your ps1 and ps2. Then you can play your original discs with the emulator. FF8 and FF9 might not work, just make an image with alcohol120% and you should be fine. FF7 and FF10 worked like a charm with the discs in drive.

I'm actually playing through FF7 again, bought it on PSN since I lost my discs. Last time I played it was probably around when I was 8-9 haha, now the story makes so much more sense! FF8 is still the best in my books tho: storyline, music and CHARACTERS! Damn I loved how thought out the characters were in 8. Quite the opposite of FF12 imo, which is my least favorite.

I still remember Cid being my favorite character for reasons I don't know. He was the highest lvled one and the first one I picked up his ultimate weapon (Venus Gospel, omg I still remember the name of it).

Speaking of FF12. ;( I played through it during last winter break, got to the last area (I think) was a ship, anyway, at that point I'm not sure if it was my PS2 being slow or just the game, but enemies would have massive priority over me, my attack command was done, it just felt like waiting till all the enemies attacked 2-3 times before actually attacking, at which point I had to heal up, so I gave up. Is that just my PS2 being old and slow? >.>

dont agree with the snes9x advice at all to be honest. sure its decent ant portable, but the perfomance is pretty bad due to that. zsnes has much higher performance, and as such is capable of rendering much better level of graphics, the best supersampling 4x and 8x filters in real time, that the snes9x struggles with.
Aah thats the stuff..

There's no way I forgot to enter the forest, not even the slightest chance. I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure it out, and as I said, I even bought a guide after I got tired of trying. I doubt it's hardware related, considering I found a mention of it on that FAQ and some other sites. There's probably more to it than just doing Wutai before Bone Village, but it's there on the PAL version.

I'm working my way through every final fantasy. I owe it to myself being a huge fan of the ones I've played, and a gaming nerd . 7 is my fav so far. Playing through 10 right now, and its pretty good but I feel its missing the big "umph" or story twist factor. I'm not done so it still has time to please .

I also played through 13 and its a very close 2nd place in terms of fun factor. I know a lot of people hated it for various reasons, but I really really enjoyed it. Its the closest I came to 100% (out of any game I've played). Sunk 89 hours into that boy. Have maxed characters, and half of the best equipment I can get. Very good game and CAN'T WAIT for 13-2 and 13 verses :3.
