Tech Support Hall of Shame
Please don't submit legitimate questions. These awards aren't for people who need help with something, but for the people who definitely didn't manage to help.
And for the record, I PMed a mod before opening this, so if you find something you said here, and don't like it, maybe you should have thought before you posted it.
This is an effort to congratulate people for providing unintentional comedic value to the Tech Support Subforum. Feel free to post your own favorite moments as well. (I'm sure you lovely smartasses will dredge up every time I've had to retract a statement made there...)
Obviously, nobody is perfect, but sometimes people should really shake the magic 8 ball a little harder before trying to help people. Some of this stuff is pure genius, and makes me giggle every time.
I learn at least as much as I help, courtesy of articles and discussion, but some of the notions that people cling tenaciously to are ridiculous, and some of this stuff is so insanely wrong it almost seems like malice instead of ignorance...
Here's a few of my favorite gems.
Read the OP Next Time Category + Show Spoiler +As a solution to scareware: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=228239¤tpage=2#22try to update drivers! if not, just clean all unnecesary files from youre hdd, or reinstall (reinstall is the last option) ofcours you may need to buy a new hdd, cause these kinfs of slowdowns are happening cause of HDD or drivers, sometimes it maybe something like a soundcard, or overheating! change the thermo paste on youre CPU, cause it might be overheating! its called autothrottling, you can disable that, just google it, but it maybe risky!
For a GPU for a person not worried about high graphics, on a low resolution: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=232663#7Not quite as terrible, but really? I would go for the 460/560/560Ti, depending on how much u are willing to spend http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233153#8Your GFX is very bad for videogaming. Consider getting a new one. Also, 3 Gb RAM is a little low. Also, Win7 is much more ressource efficient than Vista. Switching to 7 would probably help too! Too bad he has 32bit? And was asking about streaming? http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233192#7it could be really likely that your video card isn't on he right hertz my brother had something similar before Even if he could open Catalyst, I think anyone who has a decoder ring that works on this advice would already have fixed the actual problem. Here's a guy suggesting an SSD to someone who wants a higher quality stream... http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233811#3SSD, will give your computer a very noticable speed increase. It wont up your fps but you will notice yoru systm gets alot snappier
Pure Facepalm + Show Spoiler +About RAM: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=229655#14 it may be overpriced, but it has better heatsink then the cheaper ones!
Follow up to that, same poster, when told the heatsink and higher clock aren't going to be a significant increase in performance for most users... yeah, youre a man who talks though he knows nothing, you say that clocks mean nothing ha? if you have a ram with 400mhz or 800mhz which will run faster? 800! and rams go to high temperatures! so you need good cooling for it, especially if hes doing video editing, cause rendering really brings the heat up! and actually i would tell him to get AMD cause its cheaper and better, especially for editing, but hes probablly a intel whore just like you all!!!
A question that shouldn't have been asked. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=232186#19Why overclock an i5? The performance increase will be negligible. It's not the computations that slow you down its things like cache misses, which will load from your 1333MHz memory.
WTF? + Show Spoiler +Regarding paging slowing someone down due to HDD speeds: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=231693#16They USED to be a lot slower than ram. But the fundamentals are no longer like this. You see, RAM bus is outside the chip, hence subject to abysmally slow speeds compared to intra-chip solutions. It also means that the speed growth of the connections is limited. And while harddrive read/write speeds are increasing EXPONENTIALLY, similarly how hard drive sizes are, the linear growth of ram speed cant keep up. So hard drives ultimately have come close to the speed of RAM read and write, only being limited by the same outside-chip fundamental problems. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233202#12On June 14 2011 07:28 stevarius wrote:Show nested quote +On June 14 2011 07:21 AngryNarwhal_111 wrote: Thanks guys. Reformat your computer.
This as far as I know is "universally" known requirement with any new components.
Out of the Frying Pan... + Show Spoiler +A beautiful set about CPU temps and OCing... http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=228810#5Numbers really dont matter much.
Is your PC stable? (i.e. does not crash during stressPrime or similar tests) If so, then the temperature is perfect.
Dont worry too much if the sensor says 30 or 60, who cares? What you want is a stable PC, not a cool or warm PC....right?
I'd say its much more dangerous to have blind faith in working temperature specified in the white papers (OR ON A FORUM DESIGNED FOR GAMING!?).
You think the specific temperature is important, i value stability of the system more. For cleaning old Thermal Paste. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=232837#14tbh you are ok with a slightly damp cloth as long as you are gentle+careful and dont run any power through the cpu until its totally dry Really? Is a Q-Tip and a milliliter of Rubbing alcohol too much to protect your components?
And the winner in a brand new category, xplitcit, Reply Button Impaired!!

All those threads, for ONE PC build!
More will be added as needed. Congratulations to those of you who managed to earn the first batch of prizes!
Edit: Wow, I seem to have struck a nerve with someone I quoted! Every post in my blog just picked up a rating of 1 from someone. Passive aggressive much, someone? Go read Twilight.

Don't worry, there's almost always at least one person who can find sources (due to sources actually existing to back them up) at any given time.

Pretty much. That's why I thought some mockery for the people who make the internet a little less safe for the tech-savvy might be a good idea. If enough people see this, maybe they'll start fact-checking themselves first... or am I dreaming again?

Yeah I mean I get that it's kind of extreme to say that temps don't matter at all, but really, modern CPUs will most likely shut off if they reach unsafe temps, and the temp readings that the vast majority of people use are very inaccurate anyway.
So yeah, I would say stability is far more important than temperature is.

The issue is more generalizing it the way he did, to a novice, on a non-enthusiast forum.
TL Tech Support isn't Hard OCP. People who know OCing know what he meant. People who don't that take him the wrong way could fry a rather expensive chunk of brand new silicon.
A novice could easily raise voltages too much, be stable, but get temps up high enough to start causing problems.

As funny as it was, the old classic about downloading RAM was kind of a legitimate question and definitely not a response like those covered in this thread.
I've seen some of the strangest descriptions about what hyper-threading is on Intel CPUs that support it, but it's somehow a common mistake.
e.g. this, but I already responded to the below so no need to harp on it too much:
The i3-2100 has hyperthreading, so it technically utilizes 4 cores, but its not as good as a true 4 core like an i5
|

They have multiple effects. First, I do a double take, and try to hope they're trolling. Then I facepalm. Then I type out what I want to say back. Then I delete that, and respond with something that won't get me banned. That's usually followed with an email to my wife and dad, both of whom work in IT, so they can get a giggle. My giggling runs simultaneous with the emailing.

Why overclock an i5? The performance increase will be negligible. It's not the computations that slow you down its things like cache misses, which will load from your 1333MHz memory.
On second thought, this kind of intuitively doesn't seem that wrong. It's just that the reality is that for most tasks, there are apparently many cache hits, proper out-of-order execution and branch prediction, and so on, so the limiting factor generally is the computations rather than the memory access speeds.
If it weren't for those clever tricks in the CPU, we probably would all be wanting that 2000 MHz RAM or whatever, complete with RAM coolers and the whole deal.

Making sense or not doesn't change the fact that 10 seconds on Google would have showed him that the performance increase is anything but negligible.

Hmm, that one seems relatively benign on the bad advice scale of Zero to Electrical fire.

And with the potential to cost large amounts of money or cause slightly inconvenient electrical fires in the worst case scenarios.
That's why my OP states not to post people for legitimate questions, only for bad advice. Nobody worth a damn wants to make people feel bad for asking a question. Just for giving harmful advice.
The worst cases of PEBKAC all come from people who think they know more than they do, anyways.

That's why it's funny. Except for the part where RAM exists to be faster than less volatile forms of memory. It never would have started being used if it wasn't faster, since it loses the data rather quickly without being refreshed.

Apologies. Enough people have posted here saying they don't get it that I missed the sarcasm dripping in your tone of voice.

Indeed, asking for (simple) computer help on a forum is really stupid, when most of the information can be found on the Internet. I'm tired of especially the build threads, people are just too lazy to do their own research and are just waiting for people to spoon feed them, or in cases as shown in OP, getting spoon fed, resulting in more uninformed and ignorant people. A lot of people tend to think they're some kind of tech wiz and often don't back up their statements with evidence or do research before they spout their nonsense.
|
Jingle this is great, I read almost only the Tech Support forum on TL now, so its good to see all the fails get pointed out to others. Also there are many more smaller fails in there as you would know because i see you in there all the time.

It's not actually the replies that make me laugh as much as the knowledge that they all positively think they're 100% right and would've continued giving that advice to real life friends and colleagues if no one ever corrected them.

Realistically, given the reactions to the corrections, they most likely will anway.

I feel so stupid reading all of these. Even when I read some basic courses about this stuff, I doubt I would have been able to follow it. Luckily, I haven't posted in these kind of threads my self, so none of my quotes will appear in the op

Thanks, this made my day =D

Hardware is not my best field of knowledge, but the Frying Pan section truly gave me a laugh (and a heart attack), I hope nobody ever tries that sh*t on his PC. Pure money dumb imho. Thanks for the funny glance at the techsupport forums. I'm looking forward to the 2nd edition.

Source? Got to see the context... Granted, given the number of exclamation points, I know which poster's history I could check. That dude's already donated quite a bit of his credibility to humor here.

Meh, you shouldn't feel stupid for not understanding them, the people who said them to begin with should, on the other hand.
|
The unfortunate thing is that most threads in the Tech Support section have at least one post that would make this list, if not more...
|
I didn't like this. I thought I would have a good laugh, but instead, I am just disappointed. However, too many people try to seem important by giving advice, and as always, not all of them will be accurate. That being said, I think it is the duty of the person receiving the advice to actually do some research on their own, and to take into account that some people will just be ridiculous.
|
Oh dear, this thread is pretty awkward.
|
The beautiful thing is that most of this terrible advice is accompanied by horrible spelling and grammar. Really? REALLY? Is it so hard to type out the word "you" while you're claiming that CPU temps don't matter?

Meh, if it's halfway readable, I don't usually care. Although you might notice a certain pattern in a few of the winning posts of excessive exclamation points, that make it feel like the neurotic squirrel from Over the Hedge is talking about memory clocks? Drives me insane for some reason.

Just do what any self-respecting self-nominator for this thread would do. Use Google to find out what's wrong with a specific one, mock the person for not knowing better, and then every time someone makes a thread in Tech Support, relate it to that one thing.
|
|
Meh, classic trolls don't qualify. Only people who actually think they're being productive.

I saw this on another forum wasn't TL. A user was complaining about his computer being slow and a very special forum goer said something along the lines of
You have the system32 virus. Fixing it is very easy, just search your computer for every file with the word system32 in it and delete it.
Ill see if I can find the link.

Thanks.

Agreed. And to top it off the only infection warnings my AV ever gave me was when Avast pushed a fucked up update that considered any mention of gzip types as an infection attempt. They corrected it really really fast though. I can only imagine what was going on at their company for that time :D should have been worthy of a comedy.

Well, until my wife bought the most recent version of Norton on sale a couple of months ago, I used a combination of Spybot and common sense.
I've never had worse than semi-benign tracking cookies actually make it onto my PC. In other words, if they aren't directly malicious chunks of software being billed as anti-viruses or whatever else, I'm a terrible judge of whether they're a bad solution.

Ah.. I've never had any problems for almost 10 years. Though I think my common sense isn't too bad, I'm worried because I don't exactly just surf.

Good stuff there. The guy suggesting that you clean thermal paste off of your CPU with a damp cloth..............I almost shivered right there. If I caught someone doing that i think I'd probably kill them right on the spot.
And the downloading RAM guy is clearly trolling. I know I've made the same kind of post on several tech websites for the lulz. Its funny, you get all the wannabe smartasses posting entire stories telling how farking stupid you are. :-D

You call it good intentions to give advice without having a clue what you're talking about in a way that has the potential to damage other people's expensive computers, or waste huge chunks of their time? That's as dumb as the stuff I'm mocking with this thread.
As for being bitchy? I wouldn't call it any more so than what I was responding to, but at least you, unlike the person I was mocking there, had the balls to say something. The other person was just being a crybaby who couldn't handle getting publicly humiliated for being at best a jackass, and at worst a malicious poster.

To be fair, I think you just misread this guys post. Of course his advice doesn't help the OP with the problem he was asking about, but the content of the post itself isn't worthy of your comment about him referring to the SSD increasing stream quality imo.

I must agree, Tech Support needs some serious loving on the moderation... at least consistency, even if it continues to be too light.

Yeah that was painful. It's amazing how many people think that just because it happens to be good for us that water can't harm anything.
Even if you used distilled, filtered, really pure water, and got it 100% dry first, it can still cause oxidation and corrosion. Add in all the shit that comes out of the average faucet as far as mineral deposits, and you're setting yourself up for heat issues even if you don't directly fry it or damage it.
Water, as it turns out, is one of nature's best corrosives...

I've sworn off of updating the OP of this particular blog. Too many people showed up either trolling or failing to prove they were smarter than the people already in the OP, and Tech Support turned into a cesspool of stupid responses for the duration of the spotlight.
