EDIT 10/27/2011: Painted the initial freehand (the non-lightbox traced/aided) sketch I made of the main portion in order to practice w/ watercolor (I have basically no experience as you can see) before beginning the full one, don't wanna ruin that sketch. Will try to be working towards the finished product and painted full-size piece VERY soon. Pictures of the watercolor-painted smaller sketch show below, done in a few hours. There are plenty of detail differences/modification/skimping vs. the original full screenshot I'll be painting, as this wasn't the real deal per se, and I wanted to try out the different things I'd have to do on real one that might not have been in this section of the picture w/o just putting stuff there as I desired.

Far shot:[image loading]

EDIT 7/29/2011: The sketch is just something to make the watercolor/chalk pastel easier to get right, so shading and such isn't super refined. If you're wondering, yes, I built a lightbox in order to be able to trace the basic outline and position of everything. I guess it's technically tracing, but I'm fine with that, as the screenshot itself is original, and I want to have a good template for the painting/hard stuff. Also, Because it's difficult to get the image to shine fully through, I am aware of some current inaccuracies like the earmuff shape/size, and i have outlines in places that will eventually be soft edges differentiated by shading or color, just so that i know where to do that. Shading is partial and darker/light in some places, but I need to work over it or add other details with the painting stage, so that's intentional. Current stage shown below, and while it might seem quite accurate in pics and/or farther away shots, really, up close it doesn't look the best imo. comments, questions, tips, or criticisms are GREATLY appreciated <3

Decided I would paint this screenshot I took a while back, it was when the stream was wigging out mid-daily:

I'm not very experienced with painting and such, but I'll probably do a mixture of watercolor and chalk pastels. Lemme know what you think so far, tips if you're experienced or knowledgeable in this field, etc.

I know, right? I hope you didn't skim and think I painted that -.- YET.....

I'm wondering if TL has any advice for me as to where the heck to start with this, I reallly wanna do it as you can see by the beauty of the screenshot. Don't give me more credit than I deserve, as I don't even know if I could truly make it just like that screenshot when I did it in pastel/paints. I'll do my best though XD

Haha, no. I didn't. I realized it was a shot. But if you painted that whole thing, dithering, text, and all, that would be cool, I think. Would you do this digitally?

um, I could do it digitally, but I don't have photoshop nor do I pirate. If you know a free alternative painting program that doesn't have a huge learning curve, I would consider doing digitally. Otherwise, I'm currently thinking of doing it with pastels actually (likely the chalk style, as I'm better with those mostly). Think it'd turn out nicely?

EDIT: What do you refer to when you say "dithering"? the internet bars and stuff? I was considering omitting those and only doing Day[9] + room and surrounding stuff, as well as the day9tv overlay. If you think itd look nice with the computer icon stuff at top though, i'll keep ^>^

Free alternative = gimp. You wouldn't be able to use all the more advanced tools without some time to figure it out, but the more basic stuff is pretty self explanatory. Paint brush, eraser, etc.

Also, I personally think watercolors might be better than pastels for it, but pastels I'm sure could work well. Awesome screenie.

Or you could try a mix if that works, I can pretty much hear Day9's chest shouting "watercolour" at me.

Thanks guys, and yeah, I would love to do watercolors, but they're tough to do very well :/ for me, at least. I can attempt it I suppose, or at least do some washes over the paper and mix media it with Chalk pastels

EDIT: Actually yeah, looking at it again I think watercolors would be perfect for the majority of the picture, at least with regards to the lighter tones, the colors (pinks, blues, grays and off-whites), and basically all of Day[9] and close by him (maybe even the background room in watercolors if you think its possible for a newbie?), but do stuff like his stubble and the black words in pastels.

If i'm going to do a mix of watercolor and pastels, should I use the colored chalk kind of pastels still like i was planning on, or use oil pastels to make it more compatible with the watercolor?

Does anyone know how I can be able to print out the picture in a larger scale, around like more of a 25-30 inches long and whatever stays in scale with the image inches wide? It's not like i'm gonna trace it, but I WOULD like to not have to worry about trying to accurately scale up the picture on my paper when I'm doing an initial pencil sketch.

Would it work to scale up and print it by sections on normal paper, then put it together? Essentially segmenting it by a grid in order to get it scaled up to what I want?

EDIT: Figured it out, bunch of little squares cut out and taped together worked :3

So, is there anyone on TL that's experienced with watercolor (or colored chalk if you think it'd be better to use that, I doubt it but maybe if anything just because I suck at watercolor, as you can see) who might be able to give me some tips on getting more precise and refined/hardedged details?

I have a tough time not overpainting (which is why that practice one is much much darker than the real screenshot) but still getting most/all of the shading, colors, gradients, and little details/shapes there.

Halp, comments on current progress, suggestions?

i think that's too detailed to be abstract.

an abstract painting would be black glasses, tan color and brown hair; almost blobs.

but abstract is conditional. but in this case you're trying to get the basic aspects of day[9],
so it would be just the glasses/tan/hair. skin color**

::NEVERMIND:: the last picture didn't load of the composition of words with the painting.
A depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity.

Lol oh, so wait, it is abstract then? either way i wasn't sure how to call it, as it isn't a normal day9 portrait XD any comments on my progress so far or suggestions/tips?

Yeah, I decided I'd actually just do watercolor, no chalk pastel involved in that newest painting practice/update.

I asked ariwa about it during art streaming, actually, and she said the two mediums usually wouldn't mix well. I kinda agree, was just gonna use chalk pastel to get the more hard edged or pixelated little details, but I think I will be able to get those with watercolor if i take my time and such, that or just ignore them and get something like you see in the practice one -w-
