can you say "das sucht" as in "that sucks"? is that a common expression? been watching news in german all day, its all about bin laden, while cleaning up my apartment. now that im finally done with that i ahve to get on with my german again, need to recap on prepositions, genetiv, and read the patrick süskind book. so much to do sad faces T___T | ||

The expression that is kind of similar to "that sucks" would be "das stinkt". Possibly some other german fellas might disagree on this one, as these expressions vary a lot region-wise. I am from the northern/west part of germany, i am sure the bavarians down there would translate "that sucks" into something totally different. | ||

Ich weiβ nicht, wie ich es merken würden. Ich glaube, dass ich würde niemandem erzählen. Weil ich Höhenangst haben, denke ich, dass ich würde es merken, wegen eines Sturzs. Vielleicht hätte ich von ein einem Balkon, oder von einem Berg, fallen. Vielleicht genau bevor ich würde auf dem Boden landen, ich nichts mehr zu verloren hätte, dann ich versuche zu fliegen würden. Und plötzlich, wie ein Wunder, ich könnte zwischen die Baumwipfeln fliegen würden. Viele Menschen hätten sehr glücklich sein, würden sie diese Kraft bekommen, aber ich bin unsicher. Ich würde nicht eine Stunde allein haben, weil jedermann meiner Hilfe brauchen würden. Nein, ich würde niemandem es erzählen. Während des Tages, ich hätte wie einen normal Mensch sein, aber in der Nacht, würde ich meine Kraft prüfen. Zuerst hätte ich über Stockholm fliegen, Im Sommer, naturlich. Im Winter wäre ist zu kalt zu rundfliegen. Ich weiβ nicht was ich sehen würden. Wer weiβ? Ich hätte vielleicht auf der Decke eines Hochhaus sitzen, und auf dem Sonnenaufgang schauen. Dann, ehe alles die Leute aufstehen, fliege ich nach Hause, dass niemand mich könnte fliegen sehen. Ich hoffe, dass ich nicht mehr Höhenangst hätte, nach alles dem Fliegen. Dann, wenn ich keine mehr Höhenangst hätte, würde ich versuche länger zu fliegen. Vermutlich könnte ich nicht riesenhoch fliegen, weil es zu kalt wäre. Darum würde ich in Schweden bleiben. Auch über die Meere fliegen, glaube ich ist zu kalt und zu schwer. Schweden reicht. In Schweden hätte ich meinen Groβeltern besuchen. Sie wohnen in Skåne. Dort hätte ich nur mich zu entspannen. Vielleicht hätte ich ein Paar Bücher in einem Baum lesen. Deise Gedanke ist sehr Philosophischen. Vielleicht zu schwer für mich. Lieber als fliegen, würde ich unsichtbar sein. That's pretty good in my opinion, just a few things you are doing wrong every now and then: 1st person singular in Konjunktiv II ends with "-e". (as does the 3rd person singular) (würde, hätte, wäre, etc) If you end with "-en" then that would be 1st and 3rd person plural (wir würden/sie würden, wir hätten/sie hätten, etc.). For the other verb you use the infinitive. In most cases you should use "werden" instead of "haben" but unfortunately i'm not sure if there is a rule you can follow. For word order and the "werden" vs "haben" thing i wrote the text down again. Hopefully you'll see what I mean. If I used structures you did not yet learn, feel free to ask. I'm a little scared I overcomplicated some things. "Ich weiß nicht, was ich tun würde, könnte ich fliegen. Ich weiß nicht wie ich es merken würde. Ich glaube, dass ich es niemandem erzählen würde. I'm not sure one would say "aber ich bin unsicher". To clarify you could write "aber ich bin mir unsicher, ob das auf mich zutreffen würde." That's pretty hard I guess. Nothing wrong with your sentence, just a hint how to clarify.  ty a bunch.so, before i make your changes, i need to ask about some other feedback which i got from a girl in my group. she said: "I think the words are in wrong order (because adverbial should be first): Vielleicht genau bevor ich würde auf dem Boden landen (bevor würde ich...); Und plötzlich, wie ein Wunder, ich könnte zwischen die Baumwipfeln fliegen würden (könnte ich...); Während des Tages, ich hätte wie einen normal Mensch sein (hätte ich...)." i agree with the 2nd and 3rd one, but what about the first one? i dont agree with that, switching the subject and verbs placement there... "Perhaps just before I would land on the ground..." i dont know what do you guys think? | ||

"Vielleicht genau bevor würde ich auf dem Boden landen" would be wrong as well. I think the difference is that the 2nd and 3rd one are full sentences, with the first only being part of a sentence with several subclauses. You could say "Vielleicht würde ich versuchen zu fliegen." Here you have the same structure. Adding a subclause: "Vielleicht würde ich, genau bevor ich auf dem Boden landen würde, versuchen zu fliegen. The main sentence still follows the priciple you recognized, but the subclause requires another word order. Adding the second subclause: "Vielleicht würde ich, genau bevor ich auf dem Boden landen würde, wenn ich nichts mehr zu verlieren hätte, versuchen zu fliegen." (Instead of using 2 subclauses you can of course combine them with "und".) So your 1st example is (atleast in german) not a sentence on his own, hence it requires another structure (and a main clause- Hauptsatz if that's what you call it in english). There might be a possibility to use the same principle in a subclause but thinking about it I find it easier to use the Konjunktiv at the end of it. You did it like this as well in your very first sentence: "Ich weiβ nicht, was ich tun hätte, könnte ich fliegen." (As I said in my first post the hätte should be würde, but that's not what we care about right now right? : ) ) and again later on: "Dann, wenn ich keine mehr Höhenangst hätte, würde ich versuche länger zu fliegen." For now it should in the majority of cases work if you follow such a structure when using subclauses. For a simple sentence you already got it right in your last post so I'm confident you'll get it right. Have a nice day. | ||

so, next week on fri or sat, i have my last test. then, schools out for summer. i have already applied to German I, which is the next course to take. i will do it on half speed, giving me more time to basically work, and maybe also figure out what to actually start studying. a proper program i mean, not just random courses here and there. so, basically this 'blog' wont be having big essays for you guys to check over. not that i have a follow, lol, but still. anyways, im looking forward to do some studying on my own this summer and will def. pop in here with my questions. thanks so much so far, to all of you who have helped me. im sure it will show in my grades. danke schön | ||

Danke gleichfalls! well, it felt OK. last test, i had this feeling that my brain was clear and i remembered stuff i didnt think i would, but i can not say that about this latest test. i felt stupid, and tired. they have two weeks to check over the tests, excluding holidays, so i still havent gotten the results back! quite annoying. if i can find it, i will post the words/phrases i didnt know from a sheet on which i wrote everything down. anyways, im really looking forward to going back to school and continuing learning. i hope i will get some studying done myself over the summer. cheers guys for posting, your encouragement means alot to me. im no longer beating myself up that i got a D, basically, what happened was i got a D at the test, and thats such a huge part of the judging criteria that that became my final grade. but for me, what i chalk it up to, is that because im very bad at studying for tests etc, and as the tests get harder, i suffer. hopefully i will become better at studying in the future. i do feel as i am NOT worse than others at spelling, or grammaticly, or verbally, so i dont mind my D. i passed, ill try n get better grades next term. next term i will study German I, but only half speed. hopefully it will be beneficial for me to have some more time. i hope so anyways =) i will for sure use this thread as it has been insanely helpful to me.
