Please play this song as you read or listen to it after.

So today I saw something that really affected me in a good way; something you dont see very often. In this day and age people dont stay married for life very often, so every once in a while when I see an old couple thats been married for 50+ years or so it makes me kinda happy.

I was out on my front porch having a cigarette and I saw a very old couple taking a walk. This couple isn't a new sight to me, I see them a few times a week taking walks, their names are Bill and Doloras. I usually smile at them and say hello or good morning but today was a bit different, they had a man with them seeming to be teaching them techniques to walking around. He would pull garbage cans out of the street into their path, tell them when they were approaching a driveway curb, and he kept changing the way they held hands. I.E He would have Bill put his arm behind his back or raise his arm over his heart to move his wife out of the path of the object.

After watching them for about five minutes I asked what they were doing, my curiosity had definitely gotten the best of me. Apparently Doloras had "finally" gone blind. Turns out the man is a coach for people that have recently gone blind. He teaches them what to listen for in the enviroment around them and how to deal with their surroundings. Doloras has been losing her vision for the last five years or so little by little and she had awoken last week 100% blind. At first I felt bad for her, its sad to think that she will literally never see the light of day again, see a sunrise or a full moon, the stars at night or even pictures of her children and grandchildren. But for some reason the couple who I was having my first real conversation with did not seem sad, upset, or irked in anyway. Doloras opinion of it was and I quote, "Its just part of life and I'm not too conerned, Bill takes good care of me" a little smile brushed across her face as she said this and Bill leaned in to give her a kiss on the cheek.

This statement really got to me so I started asking them questions about their life which they happily answered. Bill and Doloras have been married since 1944, that's a whopping 67 years! They got married at the age of 16 in Iowa and have known each other literally since birth! Their mothers played cards together before they were born and eventually they went to the same school as children together. As Bill said to me, "It was love at first sight, which she doesn't have so much of anymore" he laughed his own joke and I did too. He continued to talk about their youth and told me the story of their first kiss. It was after school when they were 7 or 8 years old, and they were on their way home when bill abruptly leaned in and gave her a peck on the cheek. Doloras, shocked by the action slapped him and told him to never do it again! Obviously he did it again and eventually they started dating as they got older and eventually got married.

They are very cute and you can see it in their mannerisms and the way they hold hands and kiss and joke with each other that they are truely, in love. If there is a definition of a "Soul-Mate" in my opinion it is this adorable couple that has been married since World War 2 and dont just love each other but that are "In Love" which is saying something completely different.

My hat goes off to you Bill and Doloras! Congratulations and thank you for enlightening me to what real love actually is.

Oh sup Arlock? (its tetris ;p)

You're right, people usually don't stay married for as long as they did in the past. Especially in the united states where the divorce rate seems really high.

Stories like this are always amazing to hear.

Uhh, I'd hardly call this true love. More of a case of true sacrifice - having to give up good times in the sack with various women to look after one that's going blind. There's heaps of examples of this in the world - e.g. Those who remain single and dedicate their lives to helping the poor as missionaries in third world countries. These two just sound like the elderly version of Twilight. True love in its purest form must be scientifically analysed. Survey a hundred guys and ask them who's version of true love they'd rather have - this Bill guy or Rocco Siffridi.

Lol he's just a cynic. Such people are never happy with anything, don't believe in anything, and end up doing nothing.

I liked the story; it's heartwarming to know that even after all these years, they're still in love with each other, still flirt and care deeply for each other. I think such a deep lasting relationship is something we all wish for, but instead we settle for the insubstantial chaos of modern life with its cheaper pleasures.

FYI my mum works as a carer for the disabled, and I've done my (six year) stint volunteering for various organisations involving the disadvantaged. There's nothing true, pure or beautiful about their lives. People tend to only see a fraction of what it's like and say shit like: "Oh, they're special and unique and make the world beautiful because they're living with less and can appreciate the little things we often forget" - the rest of the time though (99%) they're busy shitting their pants and depressed, bored, sitting in front of TVs and screaming and crying out of frustration. A reminder of what a fucked up world we live in.

Um, the only reason she's blind is because she's past 80 years old. It's not uncommon for people past 70 to get all sorts of problems, including blindness. I don't think the guy gave up that many "good times" considering he was probably at least 60 when she started to go blind. As for the rest of your post, I won't argue because I can see where you're coming from, but you didn't have to ruin the mood like that.

Good post OP, I love stories like this.

I work with older people as well. Yes, many of them are depressed, angry, bored, frustrated ,etc. Those are a pain to deal with. Then you have people like in the op. They have lived an ok life, and have simply come to terms with their life, impending death, and what is really important to them. They have learned how to be happy, spend their time making other people happy, and making the most of their life. Call it stupid, but most of these people are deeply and truly religious. They are fine with where they are at, and focus on enjoying each day to its fullest. I hope to be one of them when I get older.

You can grow up being a whiny bitch for all I care. I aspire for something better.

Thanks op.

This reminds me of my grandparents, who both have unfortunately passed on. They truly loved each other, and were happy even as age and disease ravaged their minds and bodies. I hope that I can follow the example they set me.

Oh hush you party pooper! Love == Sacrafice. Learn that and maybe one day you'll find a woman that you'll be happy with 20+ years later.

Pretty obvious why you're so heartset on womanizing and getting layed - constantly linking "how to date like an asshole and get layed constantly" sites. While there is some merit to keeping an alpha male lead over a relationship, that's all extremist bullshit. I apologize for the OT rant, but this Tony guy seems to ruin a lot of threads with this crap.

Uhh, I'd hardly call this true love. More of a case of true sacrifice - having to give up good times in the sack with various women to look after one that's going blind.

Some people would rather sleep with a lot of random women. To me that just seems shallow and unfulfilling. I just grew up in a culture where you have one partner and I'm fine with that and it doesn't feel like a sacrifice...
Not saying random sex is something I'd avoid on purpose, it's just not something I strive for.

Everyone is different.

Do you watch pornography?

For a lot of people these days, they've become lazy and stopped going out to get chicks 'cos they just get it on their computers. It 'demotivates' them from having to make the effort for a greater reward and settle for less. But if you could, would you?

I think you would be in the minority if you would prefer a life with one partner only. Most people do it because they don't have options. A lot of people say it's shallow and unfulfilling - but they're most likely the ones who aren't getting any. It's kind of like fat chicks saying well beautiful women are just shallow and that it's what's inside that matters. It's just something they say to themselves to make them feel OK about themselves when if truly given the option they would not want to be fatasses. And who says relationships with multiple women has to be shallow? If anything there's more depth due to the variety in character.
While you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition.
