Just make sure to see how off-broadway stage shows if you like theatre. Other than that just try not to spend $100 in a few hours... money flows in NYC

If you're on a tight budget, I recommend eating cheap meals, and then splurging on a really nice one every so often. Chinatown has a lot of really cheap eats (and authentic too), and there's always Grey's Papaya and Halal on 53rd. (Oh man my mouth just watered thinking of that halal cart) For nice but <$20, I recommend Mesa Grill brunch (Bobby Flay's restaurant), Pesticci's (hole in the wall, relatively unknown Italian restaurant around 120th Street UWS), Won Di Siam 2 (best Thai food, I swear, better than freaking Pong Sri which is compeltely overrated imo). If you're willing to venture out to Park Slope in Brooklyn, omg there are SO many good restaurants here, probably most famous is Al Di La (~$20 italian). Some other interesting places to try out and visit: K-town (overpriced, but if you do go, get ready to spend $30 at madangsui, they have the best bbq), St Marks (relatively cheap Japanese food ~$10-15, tai sho is the standard place to go), Kati roll (interesting Pakistani taco for <$10), Curry in a hurry (standard indian, go to Kiran Indian if you want better), Chinatown dimsum (Jing Fong is the standard, ~$15). For burgers, jesus there are so many places and everyone will tell you differently on which is best. Imo, their quality changes all the time, which is why I think everyone has different rankings. In terms of consistency, you can never go wrong with Shake Shack. And then in terms of famousness, you've got Corner Bistro, Donovan's, 5 guys, etc. etc. etc. For dessert, just go to any really nice French/Italian restaurant to be honest. Serendipities is really overrated, and I didn't really like Payard all that much. OH but for cheap stuff, beard's papas has great cream puffs, and I do love the Dessert Truck (oh my god their bacon banana pudding is so good). Hope this helps. Edit: thought of a few more places. There's this hole in the wall bagel shop on 77th & Amsterdam, I don't even know what it's called, but god damn if it doesn't have the best freaking bacon egg and cheese in the city. There's a great taco place right next to Pig Heaven on the UES (Pig Heaven is a solid Chinese place too, though ~$15-20, but good for a date haha). Tbh, I haven't found a really good BBQ place yet ... though for soul food, Sylvia's is great (~$20), and for fried chicken, Soul Flavors in Jersey City, hands down, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. I mean, yeah it's just fried chicken in the end, but oh my god...it's like a relevation. lol

I agree that Serendipity isn't that great either. And just throwing out random restaurants that I like: Basta Pasta, Ippudo, Taisho/other St. Marks restaurants, Caracas.. Max Brenner would probably be a cute place to go to. Blue Note may be worthwhile since your brother is studying jazz.. A table reservation is a bit expensive though.

You should venture about Central Park. It's really amazing. Probably should go to Ground Zero if you have time, take a trip to the Bronx Zoo/Botanical Gardens (subway goes up there and they are pretty close to each other). You could also go to Rockefeller if you want to sight-see and Chelsea Piers is pretty fun. There's almost too much to do in one trip, but have fun! Oh and you could live on Pizza in NYC. I suggest going to a number of different places throughout manhattan. You can literally walk around for 5-10 minutes and find one. Also I just went to the Natural History Museum which was really fun. I actually never been there before and my GF suggested it. Definitely a great place to spend the day. ONE MORE THING.. If you want to get brunch/lunch and love crepes you should go to Yorkville Creperie on York Ave (east side at about 71st street). It's delicious though once again a tad pricey. Just went there last week and couldn't have been happier Oh and if you are going to any bars I love to go to a bunch of the ones in Midtown. Check out McFaddens and Calico Jacks. Pretty easy to get to (3 blocks from Grand Central). Also if you head up to about 52nd street you can go to Turtle Bay. It's owned by the same people as the other 2 bars. It's supposedly got the nickname "guido bay," but I have gone a bunch of times and never seen a guido infestation (I am not a guido). There's a bunch of bars alongside of the same area as Turtle Bay so it's always poppin on the weekend (and there's a good pizzeria around there too, lol.). Oh and if you have a sweet tooth go to Dylans Candy Shop. It's mostly for women but if you need a gift for the GF you should get her something from there. My sister and my gf go crazy for Dylans Candy Shop bath products. They have lots of candy too. There's a place called "tapas" I think... It's a great eatery where you just get a bunch of appetizers and relax. My sister gave it good reviews... never been myself. If you like hookah my FAVORITE hookah bar is down in the village-ish area. It's between 10th and 11th street on 1st avenue. It's called Sahara East. You can sit out in the back and just relax. It might be closed in because it gets cold up here in the winter, but still a great place for hookah. Sorry if my thoughts seem unorganized. I keep adding on when I think of other things you could do.
