So I'm playing in MLG DC. I am awful.
Looking at the player list, there are over 25 noteworthy names who need no introduction if you're a frequent of the Teamliquid forums or watch the many shoutcasted streams. You know these players because of past tournament results/placements, their contributions to the forums, or their otherwise claims to fame. Some are on sponsored teams, others are making the trip entirely on their own, in hopes of a big payoff perhaps.
I am not one of these people. I am a low-diamond Zerg player who was lucky enough to be one of the first to purchase a ticket (in the second round of sales.) In short, I am going to get creamed, but it will be glorious.
Given that there are at least 30 people I don't recognize on the roster, I hope to be able to survive past the second round. Past that, I have absolutely no expectations of grandeur- I'm not going to win money, I'm not going to make fans, etc. I'm lucky enough to live in DC, but these 30+ unsponsored people, surely, must be better than me if they're willing to fork all that money to fly over and participate, right?
Sometimes I ask myself how many noteworthy, tournament-ready people there are out there envious that bad players like me managed to snag a ticket. I know that ladder doesn't mean much, but when I'm sporting ~800 points (and sitting on 450 bonus points,) do I really deserve to be playing? I know ladder, theoretically, doesn't mean shit, considering its full of 1base all-ins. I beat people with 1200+ points all the time, but even that doesn't mean anything. Ladder, in general, seems like a chore to me, so I tend to avoid it. Given that everyone else is willing to put up with that chore for the sake of practice, though, I have low expectations.
When I lose, though, I will be walking the premises with my Canon 50D taking all sorts of [hopefully] awesome shots to share with you all, as well as meeting all of you nice people. If you see a fat man (football player wise, not a balloon) with a camera and/or facepalming at a tournament computer, put on your Nokarot shirts and wish me luck .
+ Show Spoiler +Blah, I wrote a much better post than this, but accidentally closed it. This re-written one is awful!

Good luck man! I'll be there, maybe I will see you around. Come up with some clever cheeses or something...?
I mainly wanted to say don't feel guilty about having snagged a pass; it's on MLG if their method of determining the field doesn't guarantee the best players compete. You just did what any interested person would do.

6 pool your way to victory Nokarot. YOU CAN DO IT!! <3

it's worth going just to meet everyone. have fun.
|
If you can get HuK or IdrA first round and 6 pool them, then I'd say mission accomplished.

Nokarot fighting! Have a fun time and share your photos.

Great chance to eliminate a big name and earn some anti-fans at least. Good luck!

GooDluck. You'll need it ^^ of course, hopefully you can lose out to someone really really famous, and at least get a handshake and a picture.
It's just a game right? ^^

If you really don't think you'll do well, you should see how far you can get by 6 pooling.

LOOK AT WHAT U JUST DID!! this post is so full of win that im actualy going to cheer for you ;P
Well good luck in DC and you might even be good who knows? GL HF

Go for it man!
LAN's are always awesome.

Ha, I'm not going to 6pool every game. I'm not THAT bad. Might keep it in my pocket if I decide its necessary but not going to just throw $60 away like that.

Good luck, im essentially in the same place as you, ~1000 points with 200 bonus pool. And i plan to go to MLG Columbus. Ill be keeping an eye on ya and cheering when i watch you in the finals!
Gl hf, may the force be with you!

I'll be there watching! Best of luck!!!
We'll be cheering for all our DC area regulars!

It was up to MLG how people would get their ticket, so don't worry about it at all. You didn't steal it from anyone or something (or did you?!?!). It'll be great to get pictures and hopefully handshake a couple pros.
As previously stated by Alou: YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!11!!1!!!!

i came into mlg raleigh at 900ish. i got knocked out the first day, but I had a freaking blast at raleigh. Drinking and just being around sc2 people who you can talk and listen to. Winning is just a cool bonus, for a non pro that is. I work full time, this is part of my vacation for the year, the MLG trips.

what did you end up doing? Keep us updated!

I got dominated Drew CatZ first round, and then a protoss named cavo second round. Took one game off each but lost in the first two rounds.
Game 1 vs CatZ, he 8pooled in to fast banelings and killed all my workers. I lost. Game 2, we both 13pooled. His banelings killed most of my workers, but he wasn't prepared for the roaches I was saving up for and I pushed in and won. Kinda got lucky- my rock beat his paper. Game 3, I 6pooled. Built a spine crawler in his base but was defending it instead of harassing drones. He defended it well and I was super all-in. I lost.
Game 1 vs Cavo, he did 1gate/robo in to fast fast fast collosus. I went mass roach. We went in to a base trade situation where I had to kill 1 base when he had to kill 2. By the time he killed my natural, I had enough roaches in my main to hold off. I won. Game 2, he did early 2gate mass zealots, I went with an old (and not very good) all-in 10pool ling build. Massed a million lings and didn't kill as many probes as I had wanted to. Tried some funny stuff to kill more workers but failed, and eventually his zealot numbers were too high. Tried to tech to roaches but it was too late and I lost. Game 3, I fast expanded and droned too hard when he went for an early 1base 4gate push. Kinda punching myself because if I had made one less wave of drones and instead another wave of roaches, I probably would have held it off and won with a big eco advantage. Oh well.
Was fun times, though. Made a different blog post that talked about my experiences.
