I am not suggesting that he drinks alcohol everyday lol. And alcohol is way better healthwise than popping pills, if worse comes to worst. Just saying.

How do you know if alcohol is better healthwise? I think that's quite a claim without back-up.
Alcohol is indeed a way to cope, but not a good one in my opinion. There are so many damaging side effects alcohol may have. It is always best to talk about it with a professional.

While having a drink a day can yield healthy benefits (especially wine), more than that consistently diminishes health. Becoming intoxicated to any level as a means to deal with any stress / depression / anxiety is completely counter productive.
The reason pills such as anti-depressants are used to cope with these issues is this. When people are in a stressed, depressive state, they begin to lose the ability to effectively solve the problems that are causing these emotions. Since they are unable to address the issues as a result of feeling stressed/depressed, in turn the issues linger and worsen. The point of anti-depressants are to suppress the symptoms of depression so that a person can effectively turn their focus to addressing the issues that were making them depressed in the first place. It is difficult for people to feel motivated to make changes in their life when they are depressed. Anti-depressants help overcome that depressive lack of motivation and focus.
Alcohol; tends to be the band aid solution here. It allows us to forget our problems. People who are intoxicated generally are not putting their "thinking caps" on in regards to figuring out methods to solving the problems in their life. Aside from it being only a band aid solution consistent moderate to heavy alcohol use is strongly counter productive in relation to brain chemistry as well. Depressive people tend to have lower levels of serotonin and / or dopamine in the brain. I won't get into all the details of the differences or the detailed uses for these, but I will tell you that they are the direct effect on how we feel emotionally, how we feel motivationally, and how we handle stress. Alcohol effectively destroys the brain's ability to maintain its proper levels of these chemicals. So, essentially, alcohol kicks the already low serotonin / dopamine levels in a depressed / stressed person down further. Not the greatest of treatment methods.
