I suggest that you use 1 villager to scout around with. Use the rest according to your plan (probably delay going to the tool age until at least 10 villagers though), but you need to know where the bushes are, where some animals are, where a gold mine and forest is, nearby choke points and likely directions he will attack from, etc. Building houses in these locations is not a bad idea, because they are very useful for scouting his movement when he does decide to be offensive.

You are in a good way. But, some advises: You can hunt, if you hunt with many workers at the same time you can one hit gacels, and quick finish the food before decomposion. Use your starcraft multitask to gain advantage on AoE1, so you can hunt while you are teching. Its better to have near 10 workers instead of 6 before tool age, so you can get some wood asap. If you have coast, fish with workers, take a loot of wood, make fishing ships, and skip farms until the next tier Later, dont make 6 raxes, make less and more cavalries or archeries. I remember i used to play one rax, 3 archeries, 2 cavalries until i get charriots or elefants. The most important resource is THE STONE. Tower rush is the equivalent to a late cannon rush, and is a fucken pain in the ass. Tower blocks tower, so get some stone for defending to a tower rush. If you defend well, you will be much ahead. Remember that your workers can build together. They build much faster, you will want to build towers with at least 6 of them. The population limit is pretty high, so NEVER STOP MAKING WORKERS In the last tier, workers have an upgrade that gives them dmg against buildings and elephants. You need it if he got towers or elephants. Chose your race by their advantage. once you know what you want to do look in the aoe cd or installed files for some word documents that details advantages and disadvantages of each race. I use to play yamato, dont remember if their units build faster, or were cheaper... you search for it. that what i can recall by now.

Here are some tips for starters: start farms as late as you can. They are the most inefficient food source. 1. Starting is very important, and not all food sources have same gathering rates (!). Its something like this. I'm going to ignore dock first opening because rush is easier to learn and I assume you are playing mostly land map. Shorefish (fastes by like 30%t) > hunting = berries > farms 2. In beginning most important is not to get supply blocked and to scout for food. Shorefish are great, especially if they are near a forest - you can put down a storage pit and take care of both your initial food and wood, its like an insanely good economic opening. Not to mention shorefish gather fastest. 3. Storage pit by dual elephant + forest is also possible. Make sure you kite with your villager and dont' have him die to the dumbos. 4. After that just set up steady food and wood sources and tech to tool age around 16-18 villagers for a tool rush. I think 20-24 villagers is standard for a bronze rush. Which brings me to the metagame a little. Tool rush > Bronze rush> Spreading out and defending in tool to slower bronze. Game pretty much should end in bronze age at most. Remember scouting is really different in this game, the map is randomly generated and players can have really weird spawn sites (not always across map), in general your units are really slow, have low sight range, and shit can be really hard to find. So against a rush if you spread out all your economic operations all over the place it can take him forever to find you and he can't do enough dmg. Units: Fast and ranged units rule in this game in general. Infantry pretty much blows this game with exception of axeman rush. Stone Age: pretty much not else goes on unless you worker rush (not really viable unless you're Palmyran) Tool Age: Archers were the original super rush unit, but in expansion they were super hardcountered by slingers. Club / Axeman rushing is good with slinger support in case of archers. REMEMBER TO GET THE ARMOR UPGRADE. the +2 armor effectively triples your HP against villagers and clubmen. Armor ups > Axeman ups > Weapon ups in that order. Scout rushing is possible due to their speed and LOS but they are expensive, weak in straight up fighting and hard to pull off. Bronze Age: There is a small timing window for cavalry (don't get them if opponent is about to bronze and has access to camels), later on chariot archers are better once you get a few of them. As always, focus is on harass and killing workers. Infantry is not so useful. In late Bronze mass composite archers backed with catapults are the ownage. A lot of civs don't have these required units or upgrades associated with them, so make sure you pick a civ that has these. Phoenician I think has access to chariot archers and cavs easy, and the haxor civ Shang has access too all tech up to Bronze. Rome kinda suffers here because their bonus is infantry (sucks) and they have no chariot or composite archers. Iron Age: Game should be over now, but cavalry archers and heavy catapults are the ones to get here. Some of the stuff I remember might be inaccurate or even wrong, but I think this is a pretty good start...

Coltrane: Wasn't 10 villagers really really low before tool? I thought 14 was the absolute min, and 16 or so was standard if tool rushing.

By the way, AoE 1 and 2 looks interesting (reminds me of YS Strategy and Empire Earth). Is there anyway to download the full version online for free?
