No, this isn't a thread complaining about balance. I just thought of a question that I found interesting that I wanted to ask everyone, which is: by what means will SC2 get balanced? The game will end up quite balanced, Dustin Browder would rather stop saying terrible terrible damage than see this game fail. What made me think of this:
In the beginning of SC1, I'm sure the game was quite imba. 4pools raped, reavers fired too quick out of shuttles, dropships were slow as hell, and people were 1basing 99% of the time. The maps were kinda suited to this, blizzmaps didn't really have a structure. As the game evolved, it became more balanced, but how? Sure, blizzard did some number tweaking, games don't balance themselves. Things like maps and strategy trends are really what determine balance. The thing I'm getting at, and my main question is, do you believe SC2 can stay in its current state mechanic/number wise and be balanced solely by new maps being created and new strategies being developed? I'm just gonna hit the post button cause I'm curious about what you think.

I think it can stay balanced, but I think that even when you consider map evolution, I don't think the units and the abilities in starcraft 2 will allow for the breadth of strategies that were in starcraft 1. Even now, strategies are almost completely map dependent it seems, for example, in terran versus protoss on scrap station, the only strategy viable against a good protoss player is helion drop.

Currently in the beta, i heard from many of my friends that maps are very unbalanced in SC2. If it isn't the maps, hopefully blizz will conduct research on how to balance the game.

I think that currently map balance favors 1 base play atm and that new maps will help move away from that. As for current balance, it feels like the protoss and are still lacking some units that fill roles that are needed (anti air, late game caster).

I don't think people have the faintest idea of what map balance in SC2 means yet

I don't think we need to worry about balance so much, as long as the races are different enough you can always adjust the maps to make the game balanced

i think it'll follow this pattern: discovery of imba --> rampant abuse of imba --> balance tweak. so in other words, everyone needs to be as abusive as possible

Im not playing Sc2, i cant tell very well, but as i read and see Streams Bliizzard is doing their job balancing and listening the players about what to fix or not, i think sc2 at the final product will be well done balanced. that why im not worry to play sc2 yet, they are doing a lot of patches.

I feel strongly about the balance of back door entrances to the main via destructable rocks. They are too easy to kill and make static defense useless. I know Blizzard doesnt have the experience in map making that the map makers for the pro scene have, but Blizzard has to see the success and general balance that these map bring to the game and try to emulate them. Destructable rocks are a great idea in that they let players open up shorter paths to areas, but opening an entrance in a few seconds to your opponents main with little or no resistance prevents a lot of builds. Im not saying to remove the backdoor entrances, but to raise there HP (much like maps like Neo medusa where ~10 temples are stacked).

imo the only thing tha this imba with maps is destructable rocks at times and this is for everyrace in everymatch up, if ur ever behind economicaly and try to turtle back, the rocks get broke and u die
also ledges with seige tanks hitting everyunits that walks by is really annoying
