Yes, it's the time for one of my biggest decisions in life. Just 3 months ago it seemed like there was a plenty of time, but now, 2 months before the end, I can say that there isn't any time at all. Ladies and gentlemen I am talking about choosing what to do after highschool. Working is out of question because after finishing the science gimnasium(well dunno how to explain it, it wasn't a classinc gimnasium with subjects as greece, although I did have Latin, but the main emphasis was put on science subjects such as math, physics, informathics and so on) there isn't any possibility for me to get a well paying job. The other possibility is obviously continuing studying.
But the problem arises when choosing what and where to study. I have always been inclined towards science, and the last three years I was mostly interested in Physics, but as the time goes on I can't really see myself studying just theoretical physics and being a professor or working in some institute. The most logical choice would be engineering which seems really interesting. Mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering are the most interesting at least for me.
Must say that I am also weighing the possibility of finding work after graduating but I guess that with engineering I can never go wrong.
When asking myself where to study I really can't find any answer. I am from Croatia and my last option is remaining in this country which is slowly but surely degenerating. My other choice could be studying in Italy. I also thought of studying somewhere farther, but haven't really come with a solution.
Anywhere I go, I would be in need of a full scholarship because my parents can't really provide my studying abroad and that's practically the only problem I have, because i think that grades wouldn't be such a problem.
I have been going to school for 12 years (8years elementary school and 4 years high school) and every year I would bring home an 5 (that's A for americans). First 8 years were all 5.0 (so pure A) while upon entering highschool my end year mark varied between 4.86 and 4.96 (it is still an A just not pure as before).
I open on hearing your opinions, how did you choose which uni to enter and please keep the thread clean as I will probably bump it with some news (whether i got accepted somewhere and such).
Waiting....=)

go to a country whose language you speak. seems like obvious advice i guess
|
Well i speak Croatian, Italian, English and Arabic..duh.
|
we have the same birthday o_o except the year
|
Speaking that many languages will give you great benefits in the future, dont worry about it.

somehow this doesnt seem possible.. dont forget you were concentrating on science
when someone says "i speak ... language" i expect at least high school level of understanding
just wondering, would you be able to pass entrance exams into high-profile croatian university majoring english?
|
ofcourse im a born croatian therefore i know it, and i have been learning english and italian for 10+ years. Only arabic could be somewhat problematic

so youve started 2 foreign languages in 2nd grade? Thats crazy. Is your italian better than your english?
edit: its amazing how humanity evolves, im not sure if i was able to write in my own language in 2nd grade
|
i can barely speak english properly
|
Get a scholarship to Canada. Jus' sayin'. in fact, come to U Waterloo and do engineering. ;]

Also, one tip of advice for your "possible" interest to "engineering". Just because you like physics and don't want to go down that path of being a physics professor, doesn't mean mechanical/nuclear engineering = physics. Trust me, I went thru that path once and I told myself, I should have NEVER taken engineering just because I was good and liked math and physics. It's not the same!!!!!
In other words, engineering is like preparing yourself to be a tool to be used and memorized of everything and anything of the given subject then applying it in real life. Sure it's great but when you realize you'll be nothing BUT a tool like how ninjas are... well, that's when I ran away from engineering forever...

Well, I wanted to work on software development, mostly in game design, so I decided early that I wanted to do a computer science degree, although at the time I didn't know the difference between that and Software Engineering, which is really what I'm doing, even though it's branded as Computer Science by the school (there are classes in the course that go into the actual realm of Comp Sci, so I guess it's a bit fair).
There was a decent technical school in my state, so I guess I got pretty lucky. It's the only school in the state that employers seem to take the engineering degrees of seriously, so when I found out getting a job near graduation was very likely, I went ahead and signed up. But I never had the option of going out of country for it, hell, even out of state as I probably couldn't fund it.
Basically, find out what you want to do. You say engineering? Well, there's always physics involved, although where you go with it will change as you go deeper into the field of your choice. You seem to have outstanding grades, so I'm sure you can find a reputable school in a country that speaks a language you're good at. I'd say you should look at Italy first, since you suggested it, see what schools are offered, what you can afford, and see what the job outlook after graduation is for that school. If a decent percentage of students get hired after graduation, you may be in luck. Although don't let that make your decision for you, there's also things like cost, location, and the quality of the courses.
Its not the best advice I guess, but I hope it helps.

Find a college that's strong in whatever types of engineering you are interested in, preferably one with a strong co-op or internship program, if they have programs like this in Croatia? Then try to get scholarships, study hard in college, you can probably make money by taking some job in college, in America internships can sometimes pay for most of college for you. Also, maybe loans are an option? If you lived in America, you would also have the option of ROTC, but I don't know if they have something like that in Croatia. Good luck on whatever path you decide to pursue!

because 1 of the 2 is always english

well nowadays yea but not too long ago(10-15 years) German was really popular as 2nd language, at least in Hungary
I started learning German first then English, but my English is much better now.

Well most americans can barely speak & write their own language, so knowing many can seem very awesome to them
Oh and studying physics, doesn't necessarily mean you'd end up in an institute, you can be teacher, work as a researcher/developer in a company, or really whatever else, alot of it is quite practical too. And isn't necessarily just physics, so many people end up in business side of technology oriented companys or such. And you don't have to touch theoretical physics much at all if you don't want to specialize into that. Its also somewhat likely you'd never be a professor even if you wanted to :D
Myself I studied 2 years of physics (astronomy more exactly) but now I'm lookin for something else... I realised I want to do something simple & less involving, astronomy basically needs studies up to ph.d to be properly competent in that area
|
Well, I am much more interested in working for some technology company than researching/teaching and being a scientist. Although sometimes I think that the best choice would be drinking the coffee and writing a book xD.
Yes, I started learning Italian and Croatian in 1st grade and English in my second. That's is quite normal here in Europe.
