i've tried navigating through thesaurus but it's not working, despite it being a fairly common word. i'll try to describe the word and maybe someone can pick it out. it's kind of like someone might say something that compromises something you've said implicitly. they might do it from a position of pretense and somehow undermine you. also, i'm 99% sure that the word starts with a c.

doesnt completely fit but countermand ?

no, those aren't it. it's a fairly common word in the sense that you won't really be surprised when you see it.

Sorry if I sound like a dick, but maybe it would be easier to help if you didn't sound so pretentious.

commandeer?
none of these fit what you've described exactly but i'm just throwing out words hoping it might jog your memory or maybe you're description wasn't perfect
|
no, those are similar to the word in question but not exactly. you would use it if you were having an argument with someone to point out to someone that they were belittling you.
|
it's really bothering me lol
|
compromise?
as in 'your compromising my authority'

it was like the itch that i couldn't quite scratch, thanks for the relief.

your second description was much better than your first
i still dunno if i'd say belittle its more like talking down
|
yeah it was hard to describe. it's extremely annoying to have a sense of a word but not being able to pick out what it is; that was my attempt to sketch it out.
|
first post was more like pretentious. second was definitely easier to fit condescending with

I always hate when I can't think of a certain word... it's a real problem!
I think I sometimes remember the usages of words before I remember the words themselves which is interesting but very frustrating.

#micronesia
Do you have that problems with words with certain vowels or just with random words?

More of these threads please. We could make a game off of this. Maybe I'll start a game thread after I get back from work if nobody else has done it yet...

I mean I actually learn and become comfortable with the time to use the word rather than the word itself... not sure how to explain this though (ironically).

You understand the context/connotation of a word but not the specific word itself :D

I thought convolute and believe its more accurate for what your describing than mere condescension..

I had a couple years where I could never remember acronym. Had that one on the tip of my tongue so many times it's burned in now.
