Although this is my first post on TL.net, I want to let you know that I’m keeping an eye on this site and it’s forum for long time. I only have made some posts over at gg.net (some may know).
Ok, here’s what this thread is about:
From April till the end of September Im gonna visit Canada to participate in a “work and travel” program (and hoping to find some outdoor-jobs, that would be great). My plan is to start my trip in Vancouver and ending it in Toronto. Stops will/could be Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa (just ideas, nothing concrete yet).
Cause here are many Canadians, I thought it could be useful to ask for advice
So, please let me know if you can recommend any cool places (“must-sees”) or if you are aware of interesting job opportunities in your city =)
Thx in advance !
P.S.: Would be awesome to meet some of you at an OSL/MSL-Party/Beer/whatever =)
Calgary/Edmonton is terrible! I recommend you don't come here unless it's in the summer, in which case I recommend you grab a $20 raft and float down the Elbow river with a beer or six. Glorious times!
Nightlife in Calgary is pretty good. The bars/pubs are pretty relaxed and the clubs are typically really fun. People are friendlier here than any other "major" city in Canada, which is nice. Calgary people are typically more blue collar than the rest of Canadians. Not sure what else you want to know...
Let me know when you're in Calgary.
I think Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are the big three cities you need to visit. I think Ottawa is better in winter because of the Ridea Canal you can skate on, but that's probably going to end... basically now >_<
Theres the West Edmonton Mall that you might want to hit up. It is (or used to be) the largest mall in North America.
Try to get up into the mountains while you are out west, for something or other. Mountain skiiing or hot spring swimming would be good ideas.
Ottawa and Quebec City have a lot of cool historical tourist attraction stuff that you can take pictures of, but there's more activity and action in Montreal and Toronto, so pick what cities you visit depending on what you want to experience.
And you can visit me here at Niagara Falls!
I don't know if you want to go all the way out east, but the Maritimes have some nice attractions, too.
Apart from WEM, there's nothing to do in Edmonton. But you can meet a few of us crazies if you decide to come to Edmonton. Gimme a shout if you drop by! And go meet Chill if you get the opportunity
Here is my experience with Canadian Cities, especially for tourists.
Toronto - fucking trash. Avoid it. Maybe go to CN Tower but thats about it. Edmonton - Go for like 1 day to see West Edmonton Mall. Then see the gang tags sprayed on all the walls and gtfo. Montreal - Best Canadian City - Especially in the summer. Seriously it's such a great place...it's like the ethnic diversity of Toronto without everyone being a douche. There are festivals constantly, and franco girls are way hotter than average canadian girl. Ottawa - Decent, not as good as Montreal, but way nicer than Toronto. Parliament is pretty cool but if you've seen big old buildings in Europe, it's nothing to write home about. People are much nicer than Toronto lol...if i haven't pushed the point enough, avoid Toronto . Halifax - Pretty sweet. Go eat lobster.
Don't know about Victoria/Vancouver except that EVERYONE from those cities thinks that BC is superior to every other province. It probably is - pretty expensive though.
British Colombia Vancouver - could visit anytime during your stay as weather is really nice all summer/spring - stanley park has some huge trees and nice flowers - chinatown: second largest or second most populous (or something like that) after SanFran - Weather is pretty mild there due to proximity to the ocean - richmond is filled with asians - downtown is fairly interesting during the summer North of Vancouver - some nice beaches, heard there was a nude one somewhere, obviously go during summer Victoria - take the ferry from Vancouver to here - i hear the ice cream is pretty nice here; summer is a good time to visit South-central/Eastern BC - Salmon Arm lake and other beautiful lakes, as well as some awesome mountain scenery - you could go houseboating or camping or hiking in several locations in this area; houseboating is especially recommended if you find enough people to go with you - waterton national park is located in southeastern BC; it's basically the canadian-owned part of the US Glacier national park; don't confuse this with the tiny canadian glacier national park which is a bit further up north and kinda sucks
Alberta -it'd be better if you're visiting in June-July Banff-ish Area - banff itself has alot of good tourism-based shops, awesome ice cream and candy stores are here - hot springs obvious, you could go to the upper hot springs (i think thats what it's called) or radium hot springs (which imo is way better, but is further from banff in the westward direction) - banff national park, jasper national park, awesome scenery in this area - Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel - cool castle/hotel with some history; not a place for poor people to stay -again alot alot alot of camping/hiking/sightseeing opportunities; beautiful scenery, and every breath of air you take will be like drinking sweet nectar Calgary - if you get there in jearly/mid july you could go to the calgary stampede; the amusement park type rides all kind of suck, but the shows/events/some food are pretty decent, plus there are plenty of hot babes walking around in cowgirl attire and they will be getting drunk for all 10 days - walk around downtown for a bit, not much to see, they have an interesting +15 walkway system going on but it's really novel - clubs and bars are pretty nice here as somebody said above; during stampede things can get a little crazy Edmonton -west edmonton mall, really big with an amusement park and water park and shit, might be able to spend a day or two there depending on your interests -not that much scenery to see Northern Alberta -oilfields, if you were looking for an outdoor job or something along those lines, working in the oilfields will get you lots of cash, but you also might get cancer or you might die or something
wow i typed alot more than i thought o.o i should've been working as well =p maybe i'll talk about eastern canada later
+1 for Alberta sucking. I really have very little experience with Eastern Canada, but personally I would have to say that Victoria Island is your best bet. Go to Vancouver for a bit, then ferry over to Victoria Island, it's a really nice place. Really the only attraction in Calgary is the Stampede, if you like amusment rides, horses, beer and mini-donuts. In all honesty Calgary and Edmonton are pretty damn ugly. As someone said Banff, a long with a whole bunch of other mountains, is really nice, go for a hike or something. Deffinetly go for the "true Albertan experience" and work on the rigs, get hooked on drugs, and live in a shitty work camp if you are looking for a job. GL HF!
Please give more details of what you like and people can give you better advice. I know (from experience) when you go to a new place you just want to be like "I want to do what's fun" but do you want to mostly: - Meet people - Experience "real" Canadian culture - See Canadian sights and history - Experience night life and drink - Eat food - Shop - Door outdoor activities

I think it's misleading to characterize all Torontonians as douches. Relative to other countries, no one in Canada is a douche. I think other Canadians get that impression of Toronto because we're just not as nice as they'd like us to be.
OP: If you haven't figured it out already, most everyone in Canada outside of Toronto hates Toronto. They even make a movie about it. It's called, Let's All Hate Toronto.

Ontario > BC hands down. Living here for close to 2 years and I love/hate BC. Ontario was pure love baby
Yeah as some people were saying, Victoria is good for a day trip from Vancouver but apart from that its pretty meh, there isn't a whole lot to do. I guess you could do some whale watching or something.. But really all we have here is a bunch of old people.
Wow, thanks for all your posts. Very kind of you =) Meeting some of you... - I’ll take you up on that sometime! :D
Sure, people will always post their personal opinions and experiences. But that’s what I want to hear; getting inspired. It could always happen that I will experience the best time of my life at a place you consider the worst. You never can tell. It’s just interesting to hear your opinion about your own country. None the less, I have to draw my own conclusion...
For what I like and what I want to do mostly: Personally, I do not need all the tourist-stuff like shopping and the typical sight-seeing tours. My intention is to visit beautiful places (nature, cities) and meeting nice people. Doesnt really matter how many tourists are there (although less would be nicer; some “insider-places” maybe). Moreover, it would be awesome if I could get a little bit of an insight into the canadian culture. That means that I’d like to see the big cities and also some little towns.
But yes Chill, you are right, it’s hard to tell what I really want to do 8/.
Haha, the toronto-hatred is pretty fun....:D Scapegoats!
Well, you'll enjoy Kitchener. From what I've heard (since I can't compare), it has the best Oktoberfest celebration outside of Germany. Of course, you're not going to be there at that point in time.....
Other than that, I've got nothing new to add. But I will add that Toronto is somewhere you should stay the hell away from. There's nothing there that is any better than you can find somewhere else, it's a dumb place to spend any time, and it's over-congested.

Vancouver has awesome night life. Be sure to hit up the clubs/bars on Granville street on a friday night. They close off the entire street and it's just a big fucking circus. The pizza places beside the bars/clubs are just as full, if not fuller, than the bars/clubs themselves.
Definitely consider visiting Niagara Falls. Seeing the actual Falls is pretty cool, especially if it's your first time, and the city is really focused on tourism. (unfortunately for us residents, I live in Niagara.) Here is a picture of Clifton Hill, which is basically a few minutes walk from the actual falls:
Definitely enough to do here for a week or so, or even just a couple days.
vancouver victoria island banff ottawa montreal quebec city halifax
the east coast is the most laid back (read: scarcely populated) part of the country. but it's a signficantly different flavour over here, and most people like it.

Winnipeg is nice in the summer (late May-Sept). We don't have much tourism because there aren't a lot of spectacular attractions. However, we have a few good festivals during the summer. Things are cheap in comparison to other cities and we're also extremely multicultural. Drop by on your way to the East.
Toronto is an essential must for any visitors to Canada! We have the CN Tower, Skydome, nightlife (although you may not care about this part), Hockey Hall of Fame and a ton of festivals like Carribanna (sp) to showcase the diversity of the city.
The rest of Canada just hates on Toronto because they secretly wish they were from Toronto! It's kinda like how its cool to hate the NY Yankees in sports, or to bash on Britain/Germany/France in Europe
If you want to see the scenic, natural side of Canada, however, then I would advise that you spend a major part of your time in Western Canada with the Rockies and all. The Maritimes are also very scenic and definitely "Canadian", so spend some time there too. Ontario is also natural, but you'd have to go further north for that in our province. Quebec is probably scenic and natural further up north, but it's Quebec :r
I think it would be cool to even give the North West Territories a shot or even Nunavut up north, if you really want to see Arctic Canada, but I'd imagine you would have a better "arctic experience" in Sweden or Norway.
I'l try and write up some more information when I get the time, but you should definitely check out Toronto because it really is the New York City of Canada and there are many things to do, and much culture to experience in the city.
Personally I would go to Toronto just because it's Toronto and you don't really want to say "I went to visit all of Canada's major cities but I skipped Toronto because some guys online told me it was horrible". But maybe that's just me, I like to visit all the major areas of any place I go to for tourism.

FFFUUUUUUUU!!!! I wouldn't go as far as to call Toronto fucking trash. It's just that she has all the characteristics of the middle child syndrome, caught between Montreal's "world class" sophistication and Vancouver's natural beauty that has left her with very little personality of her own.
ETA: Bata shoe museum mother fucker! If you wanna see some really old shoes come to Toronto.
Ottawa FTW, I am a franco phone from the north of Ontario. I would add if you like fishing or hunting to check the northern province of Ontario it is very friendly but also french (the northern part). I can't really add anything else since everything in this thread was mostly already posted.
But I did go to Toronto and I did not like it at all, but the roller coasters are really fun.
Guess I really have to check out toronto...just to be sure that the hatred is all justified! D: you already helped me a lot, thanks.
Sure, i'm interested in nightlife but that won't be the main reason for my decicion to go somewhere. I'm staying for six months and try to find some little jobs so it could be a problem partying all night long. Girls aren't a big deal either since I've got a gf already.
Montreal is 100% win summer here means the hot girls come out and the douchefags go clubbing so if you're even just a tad confident you can get lucky ezpz gl with jobs though, it's ehhhhh unless you're willing to work minimum wage
Really, I dont expect to make big money at all. I Just want to reduce my overall spendings a little bit, communicate with people and so on. Having/Making money is always good but that's not why I'll move there.

I think you're either extremely sheltered or stupid. Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world because of our size, geographically and culturally. The north is extremely different from where most people are from, even as far as Churchill. Polarbears and snow and lots of natural beauty. We have large boreal forests in the west and mountains. The centre has expansive flat plains and lakes. The Canadian shield has what people think of when they think of Canada - rocks and lakes and wildlife. The maritimes have their own unique climate as well. Basically between the rocky mountains, prairies, boreal forests, the north, foothills, grassland, sand dunes, large freshwater lakes, we have a lot.
Culturally, Canada is a mixture of lots of different culture. Besides the first nations, inuit, quebecois, and english culture, there are huge communities of "immigrants." Practically everyone you meet has descendants from other countries or is a first generation immigrant. Now, if you're saying that Canada doesn't have it's own unique culture, you're also wrong. It's developed from the different parts of our history.

Well if you want to pay for the gas + rent costs, (With the licence I have, its illegal to make profit) I can show you the Falls in Toronto from up in the air... then fly low over casino rama... check out some farms...

Go to Montreal during either the comedy or jazz festivals, and see shows during. I especially recommend the jazz festival (and I'm not even that keen on jazz music) just because the city gets a vibe to it during with all the outdoor free performances that's really great. The Fine Arts museum is a cool spot, and there's great theatre in the city in English or French, and Montreal's Fringe Festival is pretty good too. If you're a fan of tennis, there's an annual tournament that draws a lot of big names too.
While there, spend a Sunday afternoon at Mount Royal, and be sure to eat the following three things during your time there:
- bagels from either the Fairmount or Saint-Viateur beagel shops, - a smoked meat sandwich from Schwarz', - a poutine at La Banquise.
Though touristy, the old port of Montreal is worth a visit, and if you enjoy cycling, renting a bicycle and going along the bike trails from the Port along the river (westward) is a good way to spend a day.
If you can arrange it, see slightly more northern Quebec, be it Quebec city (scenic), or smaller towns in the Laurentians like the ones surrounding Sainte-Agathe. My family used to have a cabin in one of those, and it was a gorgeous place to visit.
In Toronto:
Go to Koreatown. I lived in the area for a year, it is packed with great food at very reasonable prices, and is just nice to stroll in.
Spend a day in High Park, because Toronto can be a freaking gloomy city expanse, and it is a really nice park.
See theatre or concerts.
I can list a load of good places to go for a drink as well.

This is the city Kennigit spent his time at for a while...
Kingston, Ontario
I didn't include it for obvious reasons
Edit: Haha the picture of Ottawa isn't working anymore, it's kinda good because it was making my Toronto pic look a little less magical...I should stick it near the Quebec pic
Edit 2: Okay fixed it...
Okay, my post of that damn Ottawa picture is backfiring, so here's a picture from inside the CN Tower:
It was the tallest damn free standing structure in the world for 100 years, no lie! It...still....iss...
Did I mention that the CN Tower has a rotating restaurant at the top??? Check it out!
I need to be banned, this thread is like crack for me. I keep editing in pictures of places I feel bad I forgot to include
Edit: Okay, added in Saskatchewan! All provinces represented and I'm done
Edit2: Omfg, I forgot PEI and New Brunswick!
Edit3: Okay my obsessive compulsion has been satisfied! I had to sing that dumb Canadian provinces song to remember the ones I missed. I'm sure many of you guys know what I'm talking about.
Damn Montrealers, always trying to steal our thunder! Notice how the only shot of their "revolving restaurant" gives you no indication of how tall it is or what it looks like.
Well, I'm here to reveal truth! I searched for it in google and had the word "Montreal" in it and I was still getting photos of the CN Tower, but I eventually found this steaming pile of crap.
Apparently this "tower" is part of the Delta Hotel. Yeah, I'd be embarrassed too...
More CN Tower photos
Be sure to catch a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game at the SkyDome (called the Roger's Centre now, but I refuse to accept that bs name).
The tower is so tall you can't even get a proper close-up picture of it.
View from the glass floor which you can walk on in the Main Pod.
Don't worry, you'll be safe! It is the most struck structure in Toronto and made to handle it.
From left to right: Burj Khalifa, Dubai; CN Tower, Toronto; Sears Tower, Chicago. Look closely and you can see Montreal's Delta hotel at the very bottom.
There is more to Toronto than the CN Tower btw, lol. I realize that every picture I post of the city has it in it, but it's just too cool!
Let me guess, you're working in/for the restaurant in that cn tower? =D In Düsseldorf we've got a tower as well...called the "rheinturm". looks a little bit like the CN Tower but is much smaller (only 240 metres..). and...as you expect: there is a restaurant in it as well. not that good but expensive.
Seeing those pictures makes me really looking forward to my lil' trip.
Hopefully I can avoid Kingston (and it's prison)...seems to be one of the saddest places on earth 8{
