My friend had a house warming today. I had attended despite the fact that I had quite a bit of wok to do. I tried to do some of it there, but so many things proved to be distracting.
It started with Tropic Thunder playing in the background. Such a hilarious movie, and then another friend mentioned that he had brought "Settlers." As I filed through my memory, I remember where I had heard that before: Chill's Livestream. I remember Chill playing that game, and I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

They had played one round, in about half an hour, and by that time the movie was over. I had gotten up, determined to figure out how to play it.

It was slow at first, barely understanding the rules, having no idea what to do during my turn, etc. The people that I was teamed with (to teach me how to play) had left, and I was there alone.
While it progressed slowly at first, another guy I knew sat down next to me, and proclaimed himself to be my partner. When I started to understand the game, it got so much more entertaining.

Before I knew it, it had turned into a nearly *three* hour brawl, containing embargoes, terrorist/insurgent groups, war mongrels, monopolies, and a cutting-edge fight to earn the 10 points.

After all the time had passed, my teammate and myself had managed to conjure up two roads, taking the longest bridge, while conjuring up the last points needed for victory. It was my affirmation into the game, and it was good.

Afterwards, we proceeded to watch the Redskins lose, and caught up on a few other things, while enjoying the other aspects of company, television, and card/board games.

I finally get home, while it is way too late for me to finish all my work, until I am brought upon the realization that the due dates were delayed, thus not requiring me to finish them tonight.

Conclusion/tl;dr: Settlers of Catan is now my new favorite board game.

its a little too random for my tastes. but still quite fun if everyone playing understands strategy.

Most. Frustrating. Dice Rolls. Game. Ever.
Played it all summer on asobrain and with friends.
I still rage when I think about it.

Yeah, it is the most frustrating game to watch people make ridiculous trades for though. Unless you are the beneficiary :p

protip: your starting two settlements are 90% of the game, and you almost always want to put them next to the best rock source. Rock is imba.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

great game but if you like it, seriously buy the expansion cities and knights (the other expansion, seafarers, is not that good, but you might like it if you like settlers)

cities and knights makes the game a lot more complex but a lot more fun too =) i mean in settlers there are very few complicated rules and everyone shares a very small number of objectives/styles, which cities and knights addresses. plus there's a barbarian horde and lots of opportunities to screw every other player!

COOL STORY BRO!

Jk, I've heard that the game is really fun from all my friends but when I tried to play it I was way too tired to get too involved with it so I had my partner do everything.

Thanks, maybe I'll try it again.

Yea it's an awesome game. I used to play it during lunchtime at work. As well, it doesn't get as heated as Monopoly or Risk (I guess the level of hostility is proportion to game duration), which is always good.

Played it a few times with the Knights add-on and the Seafarers add-on and it's pretty fun. One thing my friends and I don't really like is that there isn't much you can do aggressively against someone. We would come up with rules to be able to fuck each other up but we're too lazy, maybe we can look it up on the net sometime for alternate rules.

Ahahaha.

I'm not really good enough to know, but it seems like there are a variety of viable strategies. I like Catan a lot. It's kinda like monopoly with skill.

for a good time:

Drinkers of Catan

Take a shot every time you're stolen from and every time you have to discard half your cards because a 7 was rolled. Play to 5, 7, or 10 depending on your tolerance. It is a rare group that can finish a game to 10.

(there are weaker variants too... like take a drink on steals, discards, 6s, 8s, 2s, and 12s and stuff like that.)

Start on wheat / ore. Upgrade + buy cards = you win. People undervalue the cards, they are key.

How are 6 and 8s weaker than discards on 7? How is 10 worse than 6 and 8? Let alone steals.

How long is your lunch break? Maybe my friends just take too much time deciding what to do, but settlers generally drag on fairly long for me in person. Risk is actually really fast-paced if players know what they are doing, too.

Settlers is an awesome game - Development cards are the way to win - hidden victory points help a lot. The development cards also let you use some of the lategame resources earlier than you would be able to otherwise (notice the difference between earlygame and lategame resources. That is your path to victory)

I had great fun playing this game with friends and family when I was younger, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I just played it for 9 hours. And I have no idea why, once you have the slightest clue of starting positions the game is all dice.

it's weaker because you're just taking a drink, not taking a shot. also, 6s 8s 2s and 12s are socials in this variant, whereas the hardcore version is just whoever gets stolen from and whoever discards.

I think the biggest mistake that I used to make when I played was going for longest road every time
If you get into a competition it sucks up so many resources

Better to just go fishing for d-cards

How is Risk a fast game? Setting up the board takes half an hour alone <>

As long as people don't take forever deciding what to do.... T_T

Asobrain is where I play... occasionally.

Unfortunately, I hate playing offline now because everyone takes so long. I finish my games in <10 minutes online if you have fast players or bots.

I like Cities and Knights. It brings essentially the same gameplay as the original without changing too much.

However, there's much less luck involved in Cities and Knights than in the original.

don't play risk letting people pick territories... deal out the risk cards instead (then recollect). it's much more balanced, especially for 5 and 6 players and placement goes super quick after that.

Some addons are better than others...

Also, it's a personal preference. I agree with Chill, but some of my SOC friends prefer to play with addons.

question: do you guys distribute number chips in order (a-z, counterclockwise as per rules i think?) or shuffle them all up and place them wherever (moving reds away from each other if they randomly end up on one spot)?

I do the a-z method, while a friend does the shuffle method...i feel like the shuffling method leads to a slower, more relaxed game, while everything is worked out to a science with choosing spots based on where the desert is.

I DO like Settlers, but the random nature of the game is frustrating to someone who usually loves exhibitions of skill (Chess, Starcraft). I play Carcassonne some times, but Settlers is much more aesthetically pleasing.
