This is a real fast question thats not making sense to me. Poker is a gambling game, but so is black jack and other card games. But they say poker is the best to get money compared to the others. This part i don't know why, because if everyone says its easy to make money from poker, then whose losing it? I might want to try it, and perhaps make a few bucks in college this way.

There's always losers when you play, its just that because of poker's massive popularity, there's lots of winners that brag about making alot of money. For any one of those people there are several people who have lost alot of money through poker. I wouldn't get sucked into poker as a money-making scheme. If you like it, do it for entertainment but don't set your expectations too high.

You win money from other players instead of gambling against the house. The casino gets its money by taking a portion of from the pot I believe...

I plan to make an acconut at like pokerstars or w/e, /w/e site that gives you free $50 to play around. and just use that to seee how i like it.

meh you've passed the window where learning poker with an attempt to make a lot of money from it is not worth it. learning it to be able to play live games without sucking, fair enough, but don't approach it as a future career.

Poker is different in that the odds aren't stacked against you. You are trying to outplay other people and take their money as oppossed to trying to take money from the house with odds that are against you. In order to make money you just have to play better than most of the people you play against.

I went from $50 to $40 last weekend :p

I didn't have any expectations money-wise for it. But well, I guess I can understand how a D newbie can't find iccup fun.

I'll try playing more this weekend and if I go down to $20-30 I'll prolly quit +.+

yup this is basically it. in any other game, like blackjack or roulette, you're playing against the house, and these games are made in a way ie there's a mathematical model that is employed, to ensure that the odds of the house winning is always higher. so while you might go away from a blackjack table with more munny than you came with, in the long run, after a statistically significant number of hands have been played, you'll definitely be down by a certain percentage that can be calculated.

Poker isn't a gambing game. It's a strategy game with a short term luck element. Long term the odds even out and the good players win. Blackjack you're playing against the casino and the odds are in their favour (card counting aside). That means you can never profit long term. Poker you're playing against another human, as long as your winrate is sufficient to pay the rake and still be winning it's possible to profit.

Kwark knows.

I'm trying to think of the simplest possible analogy to explain the short term luck....

Imagine you have a chance to play a game where some guy throws a dice(6 sides) and offers you 7:1 odds if you guess right.

You would want to play that game whenever you can.

The only rules you would need to follow would be not risk going broke by putting a significant part of your entire bankroll on one bet, because it's the ONLY way you could lose in this kind of game.
For example, a dumb person who has $100 altogether would bet all those $100 on one throw of the dice. If he loses, he lost everything.

A smart person would bet $1 on each throw. This person would almost never lose such a game(you calculate the odds).

So, it's easy to notice here that the short term luck can make you lose, but in the long term, you will be a huge winner, because the odds are constantly in your favour.

Poker is about recognizing "how many sides the dice has" and what odds you are getting, so there's also that component that can cause you to lose, but the shortterm luck component is pretty much the same as in the first example.

If you wanna make some money on poker, I believe the $5.40 double or nothings at pokerstars is the way to go, they're pretty easy to win by playing tight and just surviving...Since they're so slow it should be really easy to play like 4 at the same time.

Been playing poker for the last week and the biggest thing I've noticed is the variance involved. At one point I'm up to 30 bucks (My initial deposit was 20) however I'm back to $23 now. I'm having a lot more fun/success playing sit and go, although that will probably be the death of me because of the high variance involved. At least with sit and goes, you can set a clear goal of finishing in the top 3, so it's easier to concentrate than playing for money.

This, they don´t last too long so you wont get bored like I do at tables and such.

If you don´t play that much I think you should play tournaments, I just started at pokerstars (played for a few years on other sites) and went + 50 $ from my first tournament, it gets so exciting when you get near the big money
But yeah that´s just me, I don´t play that much a few tournaments every now and then. And at low money games there is so much complete newbs that if you concentrate you can make some money. I win some even while watching kung fu movies at the same time lol.

Just dont sucked into low stakes ring games, that is where you lose it all. I have been playing for a while now and what i notice is that I only lose my money when im
A) High as fuck
B) playing ring games
C) Tired as fuck

I went from a giant downswing (was down to 90 cents and got back up to 65$) then lost it all AGAIN because i was playing ring games while i was high and tired.

Play in your right state of mind and choose the game you play carefully while still varying your play from tournys to sit and gos to heads up and if you play ring games make SURE you have a good bankroll.

At low stakes the rake is too high compared to the pots. And you don't have a big enough bankroll to play in NL10, unless you play with a shortstack. I think sitngoes are perfect to try poker and see whether you like it or not.

furthering this analogy about the dice.
Now imagine that every roll you lose 10 cents to a 3rd party. Even considering how easy this game is (if you are good in poker) imagine how long it takes to make noticeable profit.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

It's actually quite difficult to make money from it lol. At least, more than like $1.00/hour on average.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

You really need to get used to loosing streaks/ winning streaks. Find a good strategy and stick with even in bad times. Don't let a streak get to you. Stop when you get too mutch luck. Today i went from 0 to 8 profit then to -6 profit beacuse i took too big risks because i lucked out in the first part. Then i went up to 22 profit and just called it a day. Who knows what could have happened if i continued. But i decided to stop and be happy with the profit (more than i made in poker entire last month)

While pokering 2 months i averaged 1.3 dollar an hour. Don't expect big money.

You guys can really stretch out a simple question to something big. There's always more ppl who loses than wins obviously. Remember there's always the winners that brags about it, those who lose dont speak about it so there not so strange rly..
