Hard to say, if you care, do some reading around audiophile forums and go test out equipments yourself. Do you have a budget range? Few things can be said to sound good all around (though some make an argument that particularly high end equipment can marginalize that issue), further more, there are at times sound signatures that people like that aren't universally accepted.

active noise canceling is something you should ALWAYS avoid, the technology simply is not good enough yet. the reason why your headphones need batteries is because they use a miniature amp to create an inverse sound wave (they add sound to your music) which cancels out ambient noise. however, that mini-amp is of TERRIBLE quality and adds all kinds of bad artifacts to your music. if you need to block out external noise, get IEMs. good IEMs will form an air tight seal with your ear and work like earplugs. they will remove much more ambient noise than any active noise canceling headphone, while maintaining MUCH better sound quality. there is a huge, HUGE, difference. some IEMs (like the jh-13 pros) are comparablein sound quality to many $3000+ top of the line audiophile headphone setups (i.e. hd800, k1000s, etc. with top of the line tube amplifiers) if you enjoy your bose headphones that's great though. but for the sake of your wallet, make sure you never listen to similarly priced models from sennheiser, AKG, audiotechnica, beyerdynamic, and etc.

I've been so tempted to get a pair of jh13, except I'd need to sell off a kidney to do that ><
