Ok so i've been contemplating getting a tattoo for a while now and I think i've finally chosen something that fits my life.
The thing is, I want it written in Chinese (being an American born Chinese myself) and I'd have a really hard time asking my mom to write it out for me since I'm not that great at speaking Cantonese. I mean i can speak Cantonese easily its just the phrase I want done is too complex for me.
Also, I may not get this tattoo as I want to see how many characters it will be since I don't want a paragraph written on my arm.
Anyways heres the phrase I need translated:
"Everything's gonna be alright"
Thanks in advance to all your TL'ers. -Long time lurker =D

一帆风顺 maybe?
similar meaning (as in life's gonna be alright)
|
Can you elaborate on what is prompting you to get a tattoo written in a language that you can't speak or write? I don't really find racial origins compelling.

that's really awkward and bad phrasing for a tattoo though

similar meaning (as in life's gonna be alright) Dunno, the proverb is more a description than an assurance/suggestion that life will be alright. I was thinking about this and simply couldn't think of anything in Chinese that looks passable while fits the meaning.
Need something simple like きっと大丈夫 -.-
To be specific, Kau's would be fine if we simply want something that a Chinese would say when they mean something like that the OP wanted (I'd add emphasis on the lack of need rather than command the person to not worry, but that's minor). Except they don't mean what the OP wants them to mean. It comes out closer to that "You don't need to worry". Can't really think of anything that'd actually mean for things to be "fine" rather than "not go wrong".
|
没问题 no problem. or 不用担心 no need to worry

How hard is it to translate what he actually wrote....... god I hate these weird languages.
I can translate his english into croatian word for word and it sounds good.
And no, english and croatian are not the same type of language. Anglo-saxon vs slavic.

I am highly against your decision to get asian words/phrases
It seriously looks ridiculous. I guess it does look alot better in Chinese but still...
I remember some white guy in Korea was bragging how he got a tattoo in korean saying "I am a badass fucker" and when he showed me it, it said "나는 멋진 시발섹기"
|
because no one actually says
"Everything's gonna be alright" in chinese anytime theres a situation where someone would say that in English I usually hear this phrase in chinese 你 不要哭
|
Thanks guys so much!|
@failsafe, I can speak and understand Cantonese, just can't write it out and wasn't sure how to phrase it so it would sound ok.
I've seen Chinese tattoos on plenty of people (chinese of course) and they all turn out pretty good.
@nitereloaded, chinese is pretty hard to translate because there aren't words that can be directly translated to english.

Chinese tatoos suck

u should just get 1 cool character. any full 成语 phrase generally looks awful
|
Getting a Chinese tattoo when your Chinese isn't so good is retarded in my eyes. Get something else.

I don't think there is such a phrase in Chinese. What can I say? We are a cynical people.
A very close (imo) phrase would be 海闊天空. The saying goes: The horizon would open up when you take a step back.
It's also the title of a song by Beyond (A famous Cantonese band in he 80s)

I simply cannot imagine a Chinese saying that everything is going to be all right. Things are never right for Chinese. There's always a another house to buy, another kid to put through university, another lottery to win.

And seriously, I still can't think of anything that would say that things are going to be alright instead of there being no problems in sight

Basically, it says "I am a cool faggot"

Actually I had a friend, white, went to National Taiwan University and Taiwan's Central Research Institute (whatever that one is called) for his research and all, has some passages of one of the Buddhist scripture tatoo'd on in script. Looks awesome to me~
Comes down to how skillful the artisan is I guess? I can't imagine script being easy to tatoo.

Does this book explain to me why its funny to laugh at someone that can't speak a certain language?
|
it is funny because, because people who asked what it means have already translated it.
Hint: you translated it by merely not understanding what that phase means and by being white (signifying you are not chinese, hence don't understand chinese, no racial prejudice intended)

jon : what's that say on your shirt chan?
Chan: you don't understand
jon: That's why i'm asking you what it means
Chan: lol that's why i said you don't understand
Jon: why are you laughing? not everybody knows Chinese
Chan: it's funny because I already answered your question, but you insist I didn't, and you assumed I laugh because you don't speak the language, never did you once thought of the reason why I laugh is the fact that I have answered your question, but you refuse to believe it because you think all people are assholes in nature, and wants to make fun of ppl constantly.
Jon: ok, I understand now, you ware that shirt just to test your friend's ignorance, and baits them to make an asshole out of themselves.
Chan: ya you are right, which also makes me an asshole to begin with.
Jon: that's nice, you have proven that we are both assholes.
Chan: at least we can come to an understanding what an asshole means.
Jon: completely agree

How would you translate wordplay?
Seriously I want to know, I can never get translation done without making notes when they are based on wordplay.
|
|
But if you really want it to be translated, I think this would be best:
无忧 (means no worry btw, and far more poetic than anything in this thread so far) ask them to put it in this font, btw,
|
Except that translates closer to carefree.
