I'm enjoying the trend of overpossessing teams failing to win. It's what you do with it that counts
And as soon as I start typing USA scores lul
The US isn't an overpossessing team that's not doing anything with the ball by design. The team is really trying to score. They just can't.
The only logical next step is to 1.) Fire Gregg Berhalter(in all honesty it should have been done over a year ago) 2.) Send more players to Europe, and Latin America even.
Modern football is more focused on speed, strength and stamina.
I miss the good old days when ball control skills is what sets the truly great footballers apart. Playmakers like Bergkamp, Pirlo, Zidane, and Xavi. Stylish strikers like Ronaldo, Del Piero, Raul, and Henry. And even holding midfielders like Edgar Davids had skills in abundance.
Not sure if the development of sport science and tactics have changed football forever. I really wish that the game could somehow tone down on the athleticism and fitness aspects.
Anyone remember the good old WC previews with top stars playing 5v5 with each other? Like that video of Cantona hosting the cage game. Or the Brazillian team samba-ing through the airport. Honestly, I can't see many of our modern day players able to mesmerise us with raw footballing skills.

those were the best football commercials ever, the cage matches
Also just figured a way out for US Soccer, it is 4 years and counting till the next WC. Messi retires to Miami next year, Uncle Sam then opens up his checkbook and puts down any number that Messi wants to coach the USMNT.

Win/Win.
"Hey Messi, here's your own superyacht and private island, plus all the hot dogs and burgers you want. Help us win the World Cup and we'll give you a national park too"
Every striker should be quick and clinical to pounce on any chance, whether a pass from a teammate or blunder from opponent defender.
But I do wonder whether even good strikers struggle to read Messi's play. Whether to go wide to drag defenders away, or to find a nice spot to receive a pass. Messi works with space and time like no other player in the world. The timing of his runs and passes come as unexpected as an opponent blunder rather than a teammate setup. It just can't be a coincidence that top strikers like Aguero, Higuain and Martinez just suddenly turn into Heskeys when playing for Argentina with Messi. Maybe that's how great Messi is - it takes another world-class striker to truly develop a synergy with him at a higher level (like his former Barca teammates, Neymar, and Mbappe).
In the current Argentina squad, Di Maria is probably the best person who knows and can combine with Messi's playstyle best. Another wildcard option is Dybala who's a trickster type player himself. Alvarez has potential to be the next Batitusta but lacks experience at the highest level.
