I'm glad we're ahead and winning but I'll also be glad when Louis van Gaal quits and we can play good football again. Counter football like this doesn't fit us well. Does it not? I don’t think it’s the only option available but LvG has delivered some pretty deep tournament runs playing this way. It seems very difficult to drill a team that’s both attractive and successful at international level these days. An exception perhaps being the great Spain sides, but their core players all played together week in week out for their clubs. Without those relationships being drilled in club football it seems very difficult to pull it off in the international game.

He has had only one deep run with the semi finals in 2014 but he failed to qualify in 2002. I don't doubt he's a good coach and that it is effective but I don't think it's necessary to win.

Yeah, Netherlands are one of the most supported foreign team in France (ignoring family heritage bias obviously) and even if the Oranje enthusiasts are happy to see you do well after some tough years, it's not the football they fell in love with, mixed reactions to your results because of the way you play.

I'm enjoying the trend of overpossessing teams failing to win. It's what you do with it that counts And as soon as I start typing USA scores lul

I’d forgotten it was Bert in 2010 and not LvG, albeit a similar approach: Perhaps I’m too negative on the difficulties of being more ambitious in the international game and someone will show the way. There’s a real surfeit of top contemporary coaches to boot. It’s a mix of relatively mediocre coaches, young potentially great coaches, and formerly great coaches. Add to that less and less prep time. GOALLLLL I was about to say ‘scant consolation to my US buddies, but I think they’ve been decent and are an established Ro16/maybe Ro8 level team.’ But now it’s game back on
