It's interesting that Di Maria wasn't even deployed against Australia even as a sub. He will likely have a role to play against the Dutch. Especially if Argentina struggles to break down a defence well-marshalled by Van Dijk. And theoretically a Messi-Di Maria-Martinez trident is an optimal strike-force. The game will be decided by a battle of wits between managers (LVG v Scaloni).

Just unfortunate timing of dip in form (just like Lukaku for Belgium). Also, his combative direct playstyle is much like Carlos Tevez - someone who didn't quite click with Messi. So maybe Alvarez being younger, more fluid, and technically adept is more of a natural fit to play alongside Messi. Not related to RKC's comment but that some of you want to make Messi the god of football because of a good game against a minnow, whatever. Being toxic to his teammates far beyond objectivity? I don't get it. We heard so much of "Barca players are ruining Messi's final years". Just toxic. For comparison, we never go further than "what if X player from a small country was in a big football nation, what he could have done", we don't say stuff like "Norway is shit, Halland's international carreer is ruined, fuck Norwegians players". And that's what Messi fanboys are doing.

Are people not allowed to judge on anything now or are human beings unable to cope with the reality that they sometimes suck at what they do? Dont know where that barça players are crap etc comes from and i dont really remember anyone here talking about it.

It's going further than pointing Lautaro's bad games in some cases, and that's my issue. Not that scapegoating never happens elsewhere but it's almost systematic when Messi's team does not win in a spectacular fashion.

Whether Messi is the epitome of a great footballer that stands above all others is a subject to debate, and perhaps ultimately, a question of taste. For some, winning a WC, scoring goals, and breaking records is what defines a great footballer. To others, true quality lies beyond just results and stats. Messi may likely never win a WC. But to some including myself, he's the best player of the world in the last 10-15 years (a distant second is Ronaldo). His legacy is secure regardless what happens in this WC (unless Ronaldo suddenly springs to life and spearheads Portugal to win the WC). If you ask me who's the greatest footballer in the 90s and early 2000, I would be torn between 4-5 players. That's why I wrote earlier about modern football lacking truly skilled footballers. So I don't consider myself as a Messi "fanboy" but instead more of a football purist who admires true footballing artists and their masterpieces. It just so happens that nowadays, there's so few footballing artists around. Messi is like the last of the old guard from an age where football was truly beautiful.

Indeed, the game will be poorer when he hangs up his boots. At least so far it can’t really be said that Messi hasn’t shown up in form at this World Cup

I see a lot of interesting debates on Foden, Mount, Saka, Rashford, Sterling, Bellingham, Grealish, etc. I'm guessing Kane is a definite starter.
