I got the the "evolution as an elective" part and I couldn't stop laughing... uncontrollably you might say.
This is a huge miss by most of the Miss USA contestants, and just people in America in general (which depresses me greatly.) This isn't a religious issue (read: SHOULDN'T BE.) Evolution ABSOLUTELY happens and it's been PROVEN that EVERY LIVING THING EVOLVES. From Plants to animals. How else could you explain the modern Banana, or domesticated animals such as dogs? There's no explanation for any of that other than, "those things changed over time due to circumstance, selective breeding, natural selection, survival of the fittest," etc. And I feel it's a huge slippery slope, If you believe any one of those things change over time you must believe everything changes over time etc.
That said, I'm not shocked by the answers these women give, because given studies and poll the US ranks near the bottom of countries who actually accept it. It depresses me greatly that this is still such a huge issue, and I fear for my kids if I ever have any that I will be the one having to teach them Evolution before they make it to highschool, because outside of basic understand of the concepts I really don't have much.
but grats on your placement I guess. I don't mean to be so cynical about it or anything, I'm just really sad that this is a religious issue. Next thing you know shit like the Punnett Square will be taken out of American schools because it's wizardry trying to predict god's work or something.
edit: updated because I was wrong about bacteria! Yay for learning!

authors info is spot on.
After I watched all answers in this video I actually don't think Anna's answer was as bad as I first thought. I'm still kind of chocked the question even exists...
What time did she say it? I can't seem to find it.

that "Every Theory of how we came to be should get a shoutout."
I don't come to this website to discuss evolution and religion and I'm sick of seeing it dragged into every thread. I'm tired of our BackHo's crusade, I'm tired of people dogpiling a community member for giving a diplomatic answer to a retarded question. Wish this place had a Shacknews like option for just filtering this shit
Well-proven scientific facts shouldn't be given 'diplomatic' answers; they should be given the correct answer; that is, that evolution is very real and obviously should be taught in schools because the point of schools is to educate our young Americans.
The video here has sparked my interest, i genuinely did not realise that the "God" theory was still being taught in schools around the world, let alone in what i thought was an advanced country such as America...(perhaps i'm just totally ignorant in the teachings of this country) But wow... is this serious? is this an accurate representation of how many people believe in "god" in America? if so, please, can someone get evolution implemented as a standard theory taught in schools over there? surely all your politicians aren't that retarded... the truth is pretty obvious when it stares you in the face like this.

I'm 22 and I wasn't taught creationism or evolution in school. I was taught of things evolving, but very briefly and it never mentioned humans.

Hmmm.I mean everyone should have the right to chose what the want to believe in,but I'm kinda interested now to find out what a American High School curriculum looks like.
I don't mean to offend anyone but some of these girls dismiss evolution or say it is "a valid theory amongst others" and I'm not sure if they even fully understand what evolution is.
Can someone from the US post what they have been thought at school? Was it like every theory at a point or was there a emphasis on a particular one?
As a side note,I come from a country where the wast majority of people are Catholics, but at school as far as i remember evolution was thought quite extensively and i can't remember that we had any alternative,or at least we just mentioned some.
Btw mods, this isn't meant to spark any kind of flame war I'm just curious,if you want me to delete or edit this message its fine.

How is that possible? Even my country has been teaching kids about evolution etc. for ages and we got a state church (No clue what it is called)

It depends greatly on where in the US you are located. At my school (and I believe >90% US schools), they taught essentially only evolution, but we had to read a paragraph saying that evolution is just a theory and not 100% certain.

Like I said in the post above yours, I was taught no creationism in school (I went to a school in Texas, the heart of the bible belt and a HUGE conservative state.) I was also taught that things do evolve and change over X amount of time, but it wasn't even mentioned about humans changing over time, especially from primates. I took AP (advanced placement/gifted & talented) courses of general science and biology.

actually, what your describing is not evolution, that is mutation.

I dunno, I eventually learned about it from my teacher privately, but it was never part of the curriculum. It could be because I'm in Texas. Some other people say they were taught it, I just know I personally wasn't.

Well mutation, genetic recombination and gene flow is what causes evolution.

Edited post to update that bacteria changing to fight off antibotics is indeed mutation, but things like the modern Banana and domesticated animals like the dog are absolutely evolution.
I'm not talking religion I'm talking science and American dismissal of science. It was a question in the contest we were supposed to vote for her on, why would this not be an OK thing to talk about in this thread? Seems perfectly on point. If this is supposed to be mindless support for Anna in a popularity contest then I'm sorry, I'll leave. If this is supposed to be discourse about the contest and about Anna/the beliefs of the contestants then I don't think I'm off-base.
