Excuse us if we judge by the content of character and ideas more than outward appearance.

Sad she did not win thought, when you put your heart in something, whatever your beliefs are, it's always hard to fail.
Well I'm not saying I support all that shit about intelligent design.

Keep up the motivation Anna, cheer!

What is wrong with what Anna said ? She said evolution should be taught, but also the fact that others believe differently should also be taught. Is it not important to know that there are people who don't believe in evolution ? If I were teaching evolution, I would have no problem pointing out the fact that it's simply a theory, along side Relativity and Gravity.

The problem is Scientists and the Public use the word "Theory" differently.

Theory in science is a very well rounded peer reviewed model that explains almost all data available.

Theory to the public means a guess.

Its quite different. Either way I don't know why this is such a big issue on a Miss America thread, those girls pretty much forced to voice popular opinion whether they believe it or not if they want to win.

As much as I despise creationism, I think it is unfair to bash her: the question itself was stupid and with the weired, wrong, but sadly existent belief that evolution contrasts christian religion, it is hard to give an answer in a popularity contest.

I went to a Catholic High School, and we learned about Evolution. Intelligent Design was only ever mentioned in Religion classes, and even there they only provided reasoning why both could have occurred, instead of dismissing evolution.

authors info is spot on.

After I watched all answers in this video I actually don't think Anna's answer was as bad as I first thought. I'm still kind of chocked the question even exists...

What time did she say it? I can't seem to find it.

that "Every Theory of how we came to be should get a shoutout."

And I agree.

Every scientific theory should get a shoutout.

The thing is, there are no other scientific theories on the origin of species. Evolution is 100 % certain from a scientific point of view. Reading this thread one gets indeed the impression many Americans believe there are several conflicting ideas about this. That is of course nonsense.

"God created everything in 7 days" is not a scientific theory, so why teach it in biology? It belongs in religious courses.

Seems like creationists were somewhat succesful in supressing scientific findings with religious ideas. Its just sad.

while i agree with your message (i majored in ecology and evolutionary biology) i would have to say that no one is 100% certain about anything in science. to be 100% certain of something is the opposite of science

EDIT: also i do have to say i voted a lot for anna! I am sorry she did not win but she seems like she has a lot going on besides miss usa so the best of luck to her in her future endeavors

Yeah I know that very well being a scientist myself. Even when you run against a wall, its not 100 % certain you will collide whith it. There is a really really low theoretical possibility you can pass through it. Of course it is so small that it will "never" happen.

The problem is, if you dont use terms like "100 %", many non-scientists will immediately think you are not certain about it. Something creationists apparently took advantage of.

Yeah what people don't seem to understand that a theory is as far as you can go in science, as you can never prove anything, as there might be implausible other explanations, and such do consistantly pop up. Who knows, maybe things keep falling because of alien spaceships and not because of gravity.
That's about as far as you have to go though, and the likelyhood of disproving the evolution is fairly slim.
[This has nothing to do with religion. The evolution is a fact that many religious embrace.]

edit: Ok what I said was appearantly said 15 times on this page alone. Sorry for wasting space.

But you guys.....Chickens from dinosaurs??? yah right i mean come on....more like devolution.

Someone asked earlier...in my high school we learned about evolution in biology class, and talked briefly about religious theories in our history class. we went over different religions from different parts of the world and learned about their creation theories and beliefs.

Well you obviously cannot deny the evolution of species, but claiming that life itself has evolved from some random molecules that randomly happened to assume a very peculiar configuration that randomly started what we know as life today sounds like a theory to me You can claim that it is the most plausible explanation that we have but you still have no way to prove that it is true, haven't you?

You're still going on about how it's a "theory" like you haven't read the last 2 pages saying that theories are pretty much the end all with science. Of course it's not "proven" because nothing in science is ever really proven. Things are always being updated, new research is being uncovered and the world is constantly changing. If you trust the science that says things evolve then you must trust the science that says we started from single celled organisms. You can't just pick parts of a theory to agree with. It baffles me how people can go "oh sure we are evolving everyday and everything around me is evolving but that doesn't mean we didn't just pop up here one day out of thin air."

You can believe in intelligent design and still accept evolution because it's sound science. Evolution itself is even accepted by the catholic church
