I am a little disappointed over some of the story angles of the Zerg Blizz is implementing with heart of the swarm. To explain I will try to make an example.
Anyone else here a Star Trek fan? Well I used to think the Borg were the coolest things ever, I mean the whole connected intelligence and rapid adapting and assimilation I thought was one of the coolest ideas ever for an alien race. What disappointed me about the Borg was when they introduced those Borg queens. Suddenly what was once this amazing collective intelligence had the weak spot of these controllers. Honestly, it made them feel weaker, defeat-able, which is not what made the Borg cool, they showed up very rarely and when you did deal with them you knew some serious !@#$ was going to go down and that the good guys would be lucky to get away alive let alone defeat them.
Heart of the swarm while not doing the exact same thing, is taking away some of that cool fear from the Zerg that I love so much. One example is that now this swarm without individuals (besides Kerrigan and the Overmind and the old Cerebrates) suddenly has all these queens who take various chunks of the swarm away under their control (I thought Kerrigan killed all the cerebrates in brood War precisely because of this?). The amazingly cool aspect of the Zerg’s quick adaptability and rapid evolution is no longer just a cool attribute of the species, but we find is actually managed by some monster named Abathur. Also I’m not so sure about this, but it sounds like the Leviathan is some kind of Zerg spaceship… really?
I thought adding depth to the Zerg was fine. I really liked the revelation about the overmind that was given by Tassadar in WoL so don’t think I’m just angry about change. I think the Zerg could be so much cooler is all.
I dunno overall it just feels like Heart of the Swarm is going to make the Zerg seem less like the deadly unstoppable swarm.
