Pipes that lead to nowhere? Must be France.

No offence, but I feel like too many maps are following the same first base > third design these days and map design has stagnated.

Can you elaborate this a little more Gentso? Do you mean that the 3rd is close to the main but on low ground?
|
Sure. Disregarding ground height, there's a trend in map making right now where there's the main and then in in a straight line is the natural and third much like Pawn Re. Then the middle of the map usually has some kind of hills and towers but a lot of these maps are quite similar.
|
no offence tanken altho i am also not quite sure what you mean by that. is the third being too close? i usually try to go for a map layout that allows for multiple possible thirds. i.e. the lowground or highground one on this particular map.
|
Here's what I mean with an image of 4 recent maps that I feel follow this same trend of map design. I boxed the area that I'm talking about specifically, but the point is that the maps are all generally the same.
|
hmm thats a good obs gentso. i like some of your doodad choices lefix, seems like you're a fellow farcry mapper.

oh, didn't see your reply in time. but you are right, it is getting hard to create a truly original map layouts these days. there are only so many possible ways to layout a map without getting into ridiculosely large map sizes. most are more or less variations of similar maps. usually shaped like a flower/star where armies clash in the middle (which i always try to avoid), ring shapes or some kind of "eight" shape.
thinking about the third on this map, actually most seem to take the low ground as third, as it is easier to defend with your army sitting on the midground plateu in front of the natural. the highground one is usually the 4th base. also, in one of your examples you didn't even include the natural

yeah... sorry those boxes should be horizontal for that map. : )
I mean, I really like the design in general I just felt the need to point it out. Your map is well made and I'd love to play on this map design more often, but I don't sadly since the 2 player maps on the ladder are different.

Well Gentso - you've to use the space of a map properly and at least it's not the lame single ramp into nat double ramp into mid lame style. All maps that try to use the space properly will have the main to third somewhat in a box (even in angled maps).

Finally someone who gets it with the natural choke..
