In professional poker when pros challenge each other online heads-up, they tend to do it in mix games. They will have like 3 tables running and alternating between Holdem and PLO after every 100 hands or whatever. The two games may look similar, but they are in fact very different. So in essence, they are playing 2 different games when the challenge each other to a game of "Poker"
I'm sure by now you guys know where I'm going with this. If Holdem and PLO can have that kind of relationship, why not BW and SC2. We can categorize the game as "Starcraft". Example: when 1 player challenges another player to a BO5 "Starcraft" match, they can have alternating games of BW and SC2, where the loser picks the game and map. I'm sure some obvious problems arise, like people with BW background will always pick BW after losing in SC2 and vice versa, but that's kinda how it happens in poker too. Sometimes a player will lose chunks of money during the PLO session, but make it all back during Holdem (*cough isildur *cough). Ultimately, a player who is skilled in both games will always come out on top.
What do you guys think? And more importantly... any challengers? ;P

One problem with it is loading up another game, also broodwar is so much more difficult mechanically (not starting a bw vs sc2 topic here so leave that out please) and requires so much practise that people will be put off it as they have spent plenty of time practising sc2 so why should they bother with BW.
Although it would be interesting for ex Bw players for sure ^^.

I actually think that is a pretty cool idea! Count me in, I'll be a challenger haha
I love both games, and would be more than happy to play a combination of the two in a series

SC2 and BW play entirely differently. Also, nobody seems to like BW anymore, which breaks my heart.
|
If they used the SC2:BW custom map it may be possible, but I think the difference between SC2 and BW is much greater than PLO and Texas Holdem.
|
Well, isn't this akain to changing maps in a series in starcraft?
Scrap Station is going to play alot differently than a map say, cross positions of Metal. It looks like its still the same matchup, but its very different.
Throwing a few island/semi island maps would be interesting.
|
yup, an island map would probably make it a different kind of game altogether (albeit with some of the same tactics maybe :p )
|
i would totally do this if i could play sc2 as well as bw. awesome idea lol
|
People definitely have tried the bw/sc2 bo5's in grudge matches. I don't know if anyone tried to mix it like 1st game sc2 then loser picks map and either bw or sc2, though. That sounds like a cool idea.
The idea of an island map bo5 in bw sounds fun too. Of course semi-island maps being included because there aren't a lot of actual "pure" island maps. Loser picking maps.

SCBW and SCII require great mechanics to play at a high level, while poker has no mechanics. The time required to play various poker games at a high level compared to just one game is far less than the difference between playing just one SC or both.
|
Mechanics are tough to acquire, but impossible to forget. It's like riding a bike, you can get rusty but you never forget once you learned. Mechanics shouldn't stop you from having fun with this
Sure island maps will add a whole new dynamics to the game, but it's difficult to balance etc. However, my goal isn't to change the game up. I'm more focused on trying to unite BW and SC2

It breaks my heart to hear you think that nobody seems to like BW anymore. Seems like all of us in the BW section is nobody to you.

may not seem like it, but every1 still does.

Aces are good hands in both Omaha and Holdem but Archons are only good in Brood War.
Fuck.

Lies. BW still loved by plenty of people, op teamliquid and icc are still running great; just got done being raped by noone and LRM)Game in a 2v4 team melee.
Korean proscene is doing fine (except maybe for lawsuit), I haven't noticed any massive drops in attendance.

Let's try not to turn this into BW vs SC2, but rather BW + SC2
|
I don't actually see any BW v SC2. Just some reassurances that people are still playing BW.
In any event, I think the idea would be fun, doing it as a tournament would take awhile; though it would be alot of fun. The challenge is that for anything meaningful you would probably need a BO5 format, which would take a while especially with changing games. I'd still play though if something got setup.
I'd play anyone at this format if they want to on an individual basis as well.

sounds sorta manner. id do sc/sc2 or nlhe/plo battles. or some amalgamation of all 4 ;p
|
Because it's like saying hey lets play a mix of counter strike and halo. two completely different games and you have to spend tons of time in both to get any where you can't just pick up and play while dif games of poker retain the same idea.
