I was not much of an RTS player for most of my life. I wasn't bad at the style, I just never got into it. Now that I am older, and sick of the popular titles of today, ironic that I am playing Starcraft and World of Warcraft now but that's because Blizzard makes my favorite games. Shooters more or less have lost their flash for me, Bad Company is the only one I still like really.
Honestly, I am bad at Starcraft. Thanks to Day[9] I am improving, but ever so slowly. I didn't get a chance to enjoy Starcraft and Brood War, so I don't know the intricacies of this fine game. My Micro sucks and my Macro is worse. I am learning but slowly. As is show in my stats:
I mainly do Protoss, I was drawn to the class as I booted the game. I have done 1 Terran match so far, and a few as Zerg which I am also enjoying.
I have had a really bad day in the game today though, 9 losses, 1 of which was against bots while I tried to see if I could do a decent job as Terran, which wasn't the case as a first try. Now, as far as I am concerned Brotoss (and by that I mean Protoss with some brevity) works best for me, just out of comfort, but I know my tactics are failing. I am either waiting on resource or units to train, I don't like waiting for things, it makes me nervous, like I am just going to get attacked. I have finally started scouting now though which is nice, and it seems to be working out well for me, but I do feel it distracts me from other things. I believe that this is in part due to my small monitor, at 19" with a resolution of 1440x900, I feel it is hindering me.
Let's see how this all develops over the next couple of days. Going to take a Starcraft break during my span of Cataclysm, which means 3 to 8 days and I'll be back on Starcraft again in full force, which will be good. I will start to do my tactics with a fresh brain and a new outlook on the game. Let's see what happens.
My goal is Diamond, even if I can't get into any tournaments, as long as I can get myself into the higher tier of the game, I'm pleased.

bro since you do not have the BW background and RTS background you will struggle. But every pro started out just like you, a nublet, just takes practice. Good luck!
Once chat channels come out, you find yourself a nice clan or group of people to do custom games. People will obs your games and critique your play. peace.

Thank you for the great feedback. I am currently hopping on the TeamLiquid IRC a lot to get to know everyone, and hopefully find some people to play this with.

Seeing you in irc. Don't worry, just watch more Day[9] and also just learn 1 BO. For toss I suggest a 4 Warp Gate to get you out of bronze, and macro off that for a long while. Don't worry about expanding or anything like that until you can macro amazingly off 1 base. Then go to a 3 Warp Gate expand build once you get to Gold/Plat, and that'll take you to diamond. However, once you get to Gold/Plat you should have good enough macro to experiment with other BO and macro on them. However, it requires practice, as you suggested. Good luck on your laddering travels, hope to see you in plat soon (that's where i'm at).

Find me on irc for some games and I might be able to give you some tips.

My first tip for you is to call the Starcraft races races, not classes.
Also just keep playing, if you enjoy it, you will be good one day.
