My roommate and I somehow ended up discussing how famous the Cologne Cathedral is around the world, with him claiming that a large part of the population of the Western world knows about this building, while I am pretty certain that although famous, only a tiny fraction of people know about the cathedral. My roommate continued the discussion by comparing the cathedral to other famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Brandenburg Gate and the Hagia Sophia.
Knowing the deep affection for polls that people on TL have, I decided to make a survey to see how well-known the aforementioned buildings are.
Poll: Have you ever heard of the Cologne Cathedral? No! (87) 72% Yes! (34) 28% 121 total votes Your vote: Have you ever heard of the Cologne Cathedral? (Vote): Yes! (Vote): No!
Poll: Have you ever heard of the Brandenburg Gate? No! (65) 58% Yes! (48) 42% 113 total votes Your vote: Have you ever heard of the Brandenburg Gate? (Vote): Yes! (Vote): No!
Poll: Have you ever heard of the Eiffel Tower?Of course! (109) 97% No, I've been living under a rock. (3) 3% 112 total votes Your vote: Have you ever heard of the Eiffel Tower? (Vote): Of course! (Vote): No, I've been living under a rock.
Poll: Have you ever heard of the Hagia Sophia?Yes! (65) 61% No, I've never played Civ 4! (42) 39% 107 total votes Your vote: Have you ever heard of the Hagia Sophia? (Vote): Yes! (Vote): No, I've never played Civ 4!
Poll: Which building would you consider the most famous?Eiffel Tower (96) 95% Hagia Sophia (3) 3% Cologne Cathedral (2) 2% Brandenburg Gate (0) 0% 101 total votes Your vote: Which building would you consider the most famous? (Vote): Cologne Cathedral (Vote): Brandenburg Gate (Vote): Eiffel Tower (Vote): Hagia Sophia
Poll: Which building would you consider the least famous?Cologne Cathedral (51) 59% Brandenburg Gate (21) 24% Hagia Sophia (14) 16% Eiffel Tower (1) 1% 87 total votes Your vote: Which building would you consider the least famous? (Vote): Cologne Cathedral (Vote): Brandenburg Gate (Vote): Eiffel Tower (Vote): Hagia Sophia
As suggested by Pufftrees, here are some pictures of the buildings in this thread: + Show Spoiler +

hagia sophia SHOULD be the most famous, despite its desecration for ~500 years ><
Cologne cathedral would be the least famous, I'd say. Brandenburg gate possibly...hard to say...

Interesting poll. From general US cultures I'd say the order of people knowing will be Eiffel then Hagia then the Brand/Cath in any order.
|
Hard to declare one of them as being the least famous when I've only ever heard of one of them.

Of these four, I'd say in America at least, the Eiffel Tower is the most known, followed by the Hagia Sophia, then the Brandenberg Gate, and lastly, the Cologne Cathedral.
EDIT: And only by those who had a decent education.

Speaking as an American, we are lucky to even know what the Eiffel Tower is.

I knew them all by sight but I didnt knew the name of Hagia Sophia & Cologne Cathedral.
|
None of those things are remotely close to Eiffel Tower in terms of worldwide renown o_O
I would say gate > cathedral, ie. cathedral least known

Interestingly, (besides my European history classes), I also learned about all these landmarks in my French classes X_X

I've visited all of them except the Hagia Sophia.
The Cologne Cathedral is far more impressive but less renowned than the Eiffel Tower, a prime specimen of gothic revivalist architecture. It was also the tallest structure in the world for four years after its completion in 1880; the Eiffel Tower was erected in 1889 and held the record until 1930.
I remember vividly my own impressions of having first seen the majesty of the Cathedral without the gradualism of approach. It's right there if you step out of the Köln train station and take a glance to your right, and suddenly there is a gargantuan spire dominating the view.

Should make this into a more of a history lesson and add some photos/description (maybe just a wiki link). Can't hurt to spread some culture to those who are unfamiliar with these international and historic landmarks.

Aha sad to say I haven't heard of any except the eiffel tower....sadness consumes me

Heard of all of them from art history. Don't remind me of those painful memories.
