I think the lipstick one has great subject, which also is what keeps me from liking most of the other ones - boring subject. I'm just the lay person though and I totally encourage you going for some direction and seeing what you can do.

The portrait of Jack Nicholson as the joker looks pretty sweet aswell.(Correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm wrong it's because I'm dumb and not your art.) The lipstick one looks very much like a real photograph. Do you think I would have a chance at getting in? Yes, I think you'd have a great chance at getting in. But then again, me and art doesn't really go well together, unless it's something I can relate to, like a stormtrooper! ;> Maybe someone who has experience with art could give you advice regarding the portfolio requirements. Good luck with the art school.

It's been a great ride so far (going in to 4th and final year) and I've become a lot more aware about the art as a whole which is something I wanted. It really whipped a lot of my skills into a higher level as well and pushed me but that came pretty much only from the private lessons..... I'd suggest going with a high level teacher (you can probably even get them from the prof of your choice depending on their schedule ) outside of school. +1ing whoever said it would be nice to see something that isn't just a person , something that is somehow more deeply connected to you yourself.

Art schools like to see drawings done from real life rather than from photo reference/imagination, so if you had to send in a portfolio, I'd say throw in some life drawings. If you only want to take a couple art classes though, rather than make art your major (and don't do that, stay a math major!), I don't really think you should need to send in a portfolio anywhere. If the university you're at now doesn't have any art courses you can take, I'd say look for a community college nearby that offers art classes, or maybe some adult community program. If you have to send in a portfolio just to take a couple classes at a specific 'good' school, that school probably charges too much for what you're looking for. The primary role of an art class, IMO, is to give you a regular time where you HAVE to do art, and the studio to do it in, and a teacher that makes sure you're giving it your best effort. A teacher will give a couple pointers on technique sometimes, but everything beyond that is just up to you. That's why I think it's silly to pay a LOT of money for a class that basically only serves as motivation for yourself.

The MC (Mos Def) is digital and I would so something like that for around $30-40 I guess, never thought about it much. On July 30 2010 01:54 DemiSe wrote: The mc looks amazing. Good luck with the art school. Yep thats Jack =). And thanks, glad you like the stormtrooper. Maybe ill start doing more "nerd" related artwork lol. I actually think I have a digital painting of darth vader on my computer somewhere... On July 30 2010 01:58 olof wrote: Nice pictures, you can paint from references. If you want to take it another step, try painting something from your imagination or using the photos to make something else. It's so cliche to talk about creativity when talking about art, but you're falling into a trap of only reproducing photographs. Keep on working, the monroe picture is my favourite! I'm working on something more imagination based right now thats actually going really well, but its still a sketch right now and I plan on painting it. Thats been my biggest crutch, and one of the biggest reasons I want to get into some sort of art school. I think with some sort of direction I could funnel the images from my mind to the paper better. And the monroe is one of my favorites too =). Since I feel like I'm motivated enough myself, just paying for a little bit of direction seems like it may be the smart thing to do. Thanks for all the replies everybody. Sorry it took me so long to update this blog.
