What.CD is great at finding rare or obscure stuff. Take this for an example, I wanted to download some albums from an Argentinian band called Miranda! I checked isohunt.com and thepiratebay to no avail. I popped in that name on what.cd and got a hit for an album and downloaded it. As said What.CD allows you to choose quality ranging from FLAC to MP3(192 or 320) and other types of quality that I can't explain, because I don't know what they are. Random question. I usually download MP3-320. Should I go for FLAC or is there hardly a difference? lol Miranda hahahah

I've always wanted an account in these communities, but after reading the posts in this thread, I'm satisfied with Demonoid. I don't even know why I wanted to use anything but Demonoid. It's pretty easy to find any somewhat popular albums on there, and in plenty of different qualities. And it's not so Nazi-ish with its rules.

one thing that requires clarification here is how are they able to provide such ridiculous content while putting mad restrictions on who can be a part of the community?! Logic tells me that more users ==> more uploads ==> more seeding ==> more content ^.^

For example, I'm sure PirateBay has more content than Demonoid. But I don't want to sift through 100's of pages worth of useless, seedless torrents with incorrect names, passwords, etc.

I buy the FLAC so I can transcode to v0 and upload that as well. If I feel I can get more out of it I'll transcode a V2 and 320 as well. People complaining about ratio just don't get it. I buy music that isn't on the site, I give back to the community. In return, the community gives back, with great rips, multiple formats and a large userbase on which I can get new music suggestions. I get to spend money supporting my favorite artists and discover new music and genres. What.cd is fantastic and I hope for the site that it continues to draw quality users who give back to the community. It's what makes what so fantastic!

Except for the super-hard ratio aspect, it's a kick ass site. You can basically find ANYTHING here in any genre.

It really depends how good your sound system is though. The only purpose of FLAC is to give the user a choice of what they want to encode to. Which is actually really important IMO, because it's not inconceivable that there will be better, more efficient formats in the future.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I said that I only upload albums I own. On January 05 2010 03:17 Chef wrote: The only purpose of FLAC is to give the user a choice of what they want to encode to. Kinda wish I didn't just encode my entire flac collection into v0 last week now, re-ripping all those albums is going to suck.

There are a ton of very good private trackers out there with a wide variety of content from video games to HD movies to music. If you are willing to put in effort to be a contributing member of their communities, I definitely recommend looking into it.
