anyone successfully created an account with them? everyone is saying that its the hottest musical torrents site out there...but creating an account is painfully hard. you need to answer a bazillion technical questions about bitrates and formats and what not from their "interviewer" on an IRC chat...fuckin lame...i gave up after 20 minutes because the questions got too technical and i didnt want to study all that stuff because frankly, this has nothing to do with sharing music...all i know is that the higher the bitrate, the higher and the quality, and uncompressed/FLAC is supreme quality...

anyone knows how to easily get an account?
or can anyone send me an invite (are they allowing invites right now?)

You'll just die if you get in anyways, since getting a decent upload on what.cd is ridiculously difficult considering how all they do on there is hoard uploads and no one ever DL's anything for fear of their ratio taking a hit lol.

I believe this may be against What.CD's rules

If you don't want to make the effort to get in, then I guess they don't want you there :p

CSheep is wrong!

They just updated their ratio system, and it isn't as hard to maintain a surviving ratio as people make it out to be. I'm sitting at .23 while my required ratio is 0.19. It's not hard to keep an account alive, but to become a power user or something there is definitely effort required.

They have just about every release possible and the seeding is great.

That's what is good about what.cd

They have a rediculous amount of almost any music. My roommate did it (I watched him as he went through the interview thing and everything) and got in. There hasn't been anything that he hasn't been able to find for me and each song/album has multiple different bit rate formats. They even have a good assortment of Korean music (which I listen to) which surprised me because it's hard to find good quality anywhere else.
As far as I know, there aren't any invites that get you in instantaneously. Seeding is amazing and I would be surprised if you could not find what you are looking for. And if by some chance you can't, you can always request and sometimes/usually someone will be able to upload it.

In short, it is well worth it if you can get in but don't just be a leecher. Actively seed 24/7 (which isn't very difficult) and you should be fine.

I had lztr, and found it also to be sadly lacking. Apparently they consider film music to be classical >_> Then my account got disabled from inactivity. Rage lol. I'll see if I can get reactivated at some point.

I just use like...random sites + DC for classical now.

I mean, what.cd is still good, and it has the added bonus of being a private site so you probably won't get RIAA owned for anything. It's just really hard to get in + kind of a pain to maintain a ratio on a site where almost no one downloads.

The interview is pretty easy and they give you all the information you need.

Can't you get plenty of pirate classical in China? Last time I went to Shanghai I bought home some 300+ CD's/DVD's. Lots of OOP stuff too.

I actually was on both what.cd and waffles.fm but I got kicked off waffles for inactivity. I had trouble seeding because uTorrent was crashing and couldn't seed files. The site is really useful but its not as good as oink. It has become easier to get and maintain a ratio though. I think I am in the same boat as fragkrag atm with around a .23

I have an account on What. It's the best tracker that you'll find for music, miles beyond what Waffles can ever amount to. I cherish my account like no other, and I have been for over a year.

In relation to your blog post, I don't think you will get in judging by what you said about the interview. Even if you were to miraculously get in, I don't really think you would be a good user. What is not for everyone, and that's putting it lightly.

Interview? What interview? I got in by invite.
edit: Wow, I googled it. What an elitist thing to do, but I guess they justify it for the sake of quality and the survival of the community.

And it's completely Bureaucratic as people like me can get in solely by being invited. While, people with no connections have to go through all that trouble.

How hard is it to upload music files? They are small compared to movies. Do you seriously download hundreds of gigs of music? Oh wait I forgot people are picky and need flacs with petabit quality.

How much have you exactly downloaded and uploaded? I'm a bit curious you can maintain a ratio that high. I am assuming you downloaded very little? :o

and @OP: I can send you an invite soon, I get one once a month but I've used mine all up ^_^;;

My only source of upload has been from my obscure album collection. I searched through my mommy's entire music collection (200+ albums easily) and couldn't find 1 thing that wasn't uploaded already.

I've had no trouble uploading most of my album collection, but part of the reason for that is most of them are either;

A) not available for download anywhere
B) incredibly hard to find so you can download them

I only upload music that I own anyway, for quality assurance. ^_^
So I guess you're mostly outta luck.

+ Show Spoiler +
This is prolly against the rules, but since I barely use what.cd I can rip some albums that I haven't uploaded yet in flac and send them to you so you may upload them yourself if you want

How Soon ?

in related news, i just failed the 2nd part of the interview (but that allowed me to research all questions) so in 48 hours (they put a delay) i'll be able to go through the first 2 parts. How many parts is there in total?

I forget how many parts there are, but just a little heads-up; if you get an interviewer they'll probably ask you different questions. If you're not confident about completing it, try dodging until the one that first interviewed you is active and see if you can get another one with him/her

Obviously it's an exaggeration, but the people I described do constitute a decent portion of the site.

I don't actually live in China right now.

I tried uploading classical torrents to what.cd before, they just got deleted for inactivity since it seems no one on what.cd really cares lol ;O

Quality.
Rare albums that are difficult to find.
And plenty more I'm sure. But those are just my top 2.
Plus I enjoy sharing my own music with others. Getting a simple 'thank you' is so satisfying. xD

Basically that's the only pros compared to a traditional rapidshare/megaupload community or even public trackers. I really wouldn't say there was anything else. What.CD is great at finding rare or obscure stuff. Take this for an example, I wanted to download some albums from an Argentinian band called Miranda! I checked isohunt.com and thepiratebay to no avail. I popped in that name on what.cd and got a hit for an album and downloaded it.

As said What.CD allows you to choose quality ranging from FLAC to MP3(192 or 320) and other types of quality that I can't explain, because I don't know what they are.

Random question. I usually download MP3-320. Should I go for FLAC or is there hardly a difference?

Only go for FLAC if you can afford the ratio. The files are a lot bigger but the difference in quality is huge. It really depends how good your sound system is though.

Yeah, I guess.

I've heard the difference is minimal unless you're running a top notch sound system, which I'm not. Also, I feel that FLAC files are way to huge.

There is really no difference to be honest unless you're a perfectionist. Most music starts sounding like a lossless rip, assuming it wasn't transcoded from a lossy format, at 192 kb/s with LAME

90% of what.cd users use LAME so v0 is usually just fine for most music. Plus since it's vbr the size will generally be smaller than cbr, without loss of sound quality unless you have superhuman ears.

Plus, as mentioned before this post, sound systems play a big role. If you use speakers of any kind I wouldn't recommend flac tbh. High quality headphones on the other hand might show some difference, but it would be pretty minor between 320 and flac.

Best site ever forsure, i dont know what i would do without it. once u seen the light of What.cd u can never go back

And if u cant get ur ratio up just download EVERY free leach there is if u have the harddrive space it will really add up and grow ur ratio if ur lazy to upload anything or have nothing to upload

Also, if you have the harddrive space, download every single different format available too for the freeleeches, usually there's FLAC and either 321 or V0 at the least, sometimes even more. Helps out your ratio a lot.

all these music sites are pretty easy to seed on and you don't need a great connection or anything. if you're lazy, all you really have to do is pick up some popular albums or an app like photoshop or something and seed 24/7 and then be patient. or just get top10 access and jump on hot torrents before they are seeded well. i have >2.5 ratio on what and waffles (and oink when it existed) without very much effort

wow, can't believe this interview process for what.cd.

i've been a waffles user for over a year, and pretty happy with it. i have some extra invites, but it might be a few weeks before i can send them.

what is the appeal of a site like this over using google to search for mediafire/megaupload files

Should I go for FLAC or is there hardly a difference?

lol Miranda hahahah

I don't understand that kind of elitist ideology at all. I guess it works for what they want out of it.

I've always wanted an account in these communities, but after reading the posts in this thread, I'm satisfied with Demonoid. I don't even know why I wanted to use anything but Demonoid. It's pretty easy to find any somewhat popular albums on there, and in plenty of different qualities. And it's not so Nazi-ish with its rules.

Demonoid is (or was pre-downtime) better for classical IMO.

i'm really intrigued to see if What.CD has better content than Soulseek. if it does, then it's definitely the shiznit.

one thing that requires clarification here is how are they able to provide such ridiculous content while putting mad restrictions on who can be a part of the community?! Logic tells me that more users ==> more uploads ==> more seeding ==> more content ^.^

More users, more uploads, more seeding, and more content is not necessarily good. They want quality users, who create quality uploads, with fast uploading, and thus encouraging high quality content.

For example, I'm sure PirateBay has more content than Demonoid. But I don't want to sift through 100's of pages worth of useless, seedless torrents with incorrect names, passwords, etc.

My key to a killer upload on what is downloading live shows from bands I like currently on tour (e.g. livedownloads.com) and then uploading them.

I buy the FLAC so I can transcode to v0 and upload that as well. If I feel I can get more out of it I'll transcode a V2 and 320 as well.

People complaining about ratio just don't get it. I buy music that isn't on the site, I give back to the community. In return, the community gives back, with great rips, multiple formats and a large userbase on which I can get new music suggestions. I get to spend money supporting my favorite artists and discover new music and genres.

What.cd is fantastic and I hope for the site that it continues to draw quality users who give back to the community. It's what makes what so fantastic!

Yeah I have what.cd.

Except for the super-hard ratio aspect, it's a kick ass site. You can basically find ANYTHING here in any genre.

I miss Oink where my ratio was ~40. At what.cd it's like 0.25 or something.

Only go for FLAC if you can afford the ratio. The files are a lot bigger but the difference in quality is huge. It really depends how good your sound system is though.

The only purpose of FLAC is to give the user a choice of what they want to encode to. Which is actually really important IMO, because it's not inconceivable that there will be better, more efficient formats in the future.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I said that I only upload albums I own.

You know, I never thought about that. Kinda wish I didn't just encode my entire flac collection into v0 last week now, re-ripping all those albums is going to suck.

RIP and best of luck to Alan Ellis.

There are a ton of very good private trackers out there with a wide variety of content from video games to HD movies to music. If you are willing to put in effort to be a contributing member of their communities, I definitely recommend looking into it.

Been there, done that, not everyone's interested in the same type of music -> my torrents get deleted for inactivity. Oh well ;O

My ratio is always above a 3. What.CD gives out a lot of good opportunities to gain ratio. Try to make some friends and see if someone is in their community. Also there are many good sharing networks, including just normal friends! If I ever get some invites again, people can PM me to see if I can give them one.
