Kudos to Entropy.
It works!
Steps
1. Download SC BETA
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4116731/StarCraft_Beta
2. Use Daemon Tools to mount and install.
3. Download BETA gate
http://www.filefactory.com/file/bc05ec/n/SC_Beta_Gate.rar
4. Extract BETA gate, run it, and choose server. I choose East. Now click BETA SC on launch menu. It will start up SC and then click multiplier, choose battle.net, and you will have to make a new name. Once that's done you can play. It's telling Battle.net that you're on Shareware.
BROODWAR BETA
Before step 4: mount and install brood war beta.

Am I the only one who’s mildly interested in playing the old beta that was shipped to adoring fans back in 1997 or 1998? I mean wouldn’t it be cool to actually play it and not just read about it or look at old videos of it on the internet.
I found the ISO on Piratebay, although I could upload it to a file sharing website later on if people are actually interested in playing the beta.
I seem to remember someone uploading the beta ISO a couple years ago and patching a registry file to allow people to connect to US East. I don’t remember who it was.
There is a problem though.
You need to connect to a server. The original beta came with a registry of the old Battle.net servers. They don’t exist anymore so when I installed and tried to connect to Battle.net it just lags and doesn’t do anything (back then there weren’t 4 servers it was just one big server).
I found this guide. It basically tells you that you need to set up a server to play the beta. It's old and I'm pretty sure there might be better alternatives, but it does provide an EXE that allows a game with just one player.

However, the poster who uploaded the file mentioned that you could configure it so you would be able to play on hamachi, but I have no idea how to do this.
So what I’m asking is if there are people out there who are interested in help setting this up and maybe playing. I don’t mean let’s have a tournament or something, although that does sound mildly amusing. I just mean play some games and have a little fun.
Any takers!?
