Am I the only one who’s mildly interested in playing the old beta that was shipped to adoring fans back in 1997 or 1998? I mean wouldn’t it be cool to actually play it and not just read about it or look at old videos of it on the internet.
I found the ISO on Piratebay, although I could upload it to a file sharing website later on if people are actually interested in playing the beta.
I seem to remember someone uploading the beta ISO a couple years ago and patching a registry file to allow people to connect to US East. I don’t remember who it was.
There is a problem though.
You need to connect to a server. The original beta came with a registry of the old Battle.net servers. They don’t exist anymore so when I installed and tried to connect to Battle.net it just lags and doesn’t do anything (back then there weren’t 4 servers it was just one big server).
I found this guide. It basically tells you that you need to set up a server to play the beta. It's old and I'm pretty sure there might be better alternatives, but it does provide an EXE that allows a game with just one player. http://avantageous.com/SCBeta.htm
However, the poster who uploaded the file mentioned that you could configure it so you would be able to play on hamachi, but I have no idea how to do this.
So what I’m asking is if there are people out there who are interested in help setting this up and maybe playing. I don’t mean let’s have a tournament or something, although that does sound mildly amusing. I just mean play some games and have a little fun.
Hm.... it says im missing MSWINSCK.ocx, but when i downloaded it, and put it in my system32 folder, i still get the same error. Edit; I'm on windows 7 ultimate

What are you following? I simply installed the iso, downloaded beta gate, ran it, and it worked fine. I didn't have to put anything in my system32 folder.

Later SC beta screenshots. It looks like regular SC.

SC Beta was pretty fun, haven't played it since the Beta Gate stuff was released though, probably better than my patched exe version. Here's the original thread for that stuff, has some screenshots and videos and stuff in it: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=41955

Hey you wrote that guide I originally found. Cool and thanks for the screen shots.

Heh, Im sorta proud of that thread, since I've made it. Those were the good times Tec; thanks for coding all of it. You should receive more props.
I should make an animated gif from the old archon merge; it was awesome.
Damn, Sigh I really don't know what to tell you. I'm not as PC knowledgeable as I'd want to be. Hopefully, somebody might encounter this thread and be able to help you out.

You need to register it
Go to start -> run and type
regsvr32 mswinsck.ocx
this is the problem i'm getting but:
The module 'mswinsck.ocx' failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.
The specified module could not be found."
or, when i run as admin:
To register a module, you must provide a binary name.
Usage: regsvr32 [/n] [/i[:cmdline]] dllname /u -Unregister server /s -Silent; display no message boxes /i -Call DllInstall passing it an optional [cmdline]; when used with /u calls dll uninstall /n -do not call DllRegisterServer; this option must be used with /i
[/u][/s]
i feel like i'm being a dumbass, but i have no idea what to do =\

What I did was put the mswinsck.ocx into windows/system32 then run "regsvr32 \windows\system32\MSWINSCK.OCX"
btw sc beta gate doesn't work for me I get the unable to initialize network error

I'm getting the same error and it didn't work. Maybe hamachi is the way to go?

Are you getting the unable to initialize network error? or a regsvr32 error?
The module "mswinsck.ocx" may not compatible with the version of Windows that you're running. Check if the module is compatible with an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of regsvr32.exe.
the version i got i found by googling "mswinsck.ocx 64 bit", so i assume its 64-bit. and help? i can run the beta, but can't get the beta gate to work.

This was made before Vista was released I think. Other than running it on XP Compatibility mode, there's nothing I can think of.
Hello, sorry for bumping this thread but I have an unable to initialize network problem (I have read the whole thread and read the guide to manually create a server, nothing worked) and got an "runtime 72 error ect." in the beta gate. Can anyone help me play the beta? D:
