They'll only get rude if you get in their way (in which case, you deserve it). Examples of getting in people's ways: - blocking the wrong side of the escalator - standing still on or at the top of a stairway - not moving all the way into the subway car when it's crowded (a lot of natives do this too, it pisses me off) - walking slowly and blocking paths in corridors (happens a lot when large groups of friends are walking together) - causing everyone behind you to miss trains because you walked too slowly down the stairs - swiping your MetroCard, seeing "Insufficient Fare", and then continuing to swipe several times in the hope that money will magically appear on it, holding up everyone behind you (this happens a lot more than you might think), especially if it's an entrance with only one turnstile If someone is just waiting on the platform for a train, they generally won't be bothered if you ask for help.

So I worked near Times Square (49 and 7), and walking to work from the subway station in the morning was the biggest pain ever. Tourists would always abruptly stop in the middle of the sidewalk for no particular reason.

If you visit NYC, keep your eyes open for shit other posters have said. But in the end, not really a big deal. As a tourist, you can stop traffic on the elevator, and people will curse and scowl, but they won't punch you in the face. If you've got thick skin, you can handle it. Otherwise, get with the program. But in order to truly enjoy New York, just follow one rule: 1. Don't give a fuck.

+ Show Spoiler + lol j/k NYC isn't bad. Then again, I live a 35 minute train ride from midtown Manhattan and I barely go in once a year so I'm not the person to ask.
