Anyone from New York City here? Could you please give a very short summary about the city in general like lifestyle, criminality, mentality, costs of living, people or anything else you would like to add concerning this matter? I have always been interested in going or maybe even moving there, so I would like to hear some of the experiences people made.
From what I have heard it is really a great place to live, as long as you are not caught up in a random gangwar T_T

So yeah, any experiences you made there would be appreciated!

living there is not encouraged.

its brutally expensive (though obviously wages are also high)

its not terribly safe, the lifestyle is fantastic. there are always places to go and things to see at any time of day or night, people are terribly selfish. You will not talk to a random stranger. Asking directions will be frowned upon by anyone that lives there, though the tourists are usually friendly enough. Not that it should be necessary to anyone with a brain, streets and avenues are numbered sequentially.

Its very all for one-ish in NY. Also, do not be a red sox fan.

NYC is the biz nass.

Lifestyle - Yes we have
Criminality - Only if you act up, snitch, or ask for it
Mentality - Fuck you
Costs of living - If you're asking what it costs to live here, I would reconsider. Costs your soul.

Still, NYC is home. Visit. I welcome you.

city that never sleeps!
criminality Is pretty bad ins ome areas but its pretty good in manhattan.
I admit we are some pretty mean people. Especially on the subway. everyone has attitude problems here.
Cost of living is pretty high

I suggest visiting though its pretty nice place

Living exactly where? NYC as in Manhattan, or as in the surrounding suburbs with commute to work? Either way, the lifestyle is excellent, there will be few things in wanting except perhaps greenery. Even that can be found at the right places.

Criminality, somehow, in spite of being here for 10+ years, I haven't had anything happen to me. That's with a habit of taking late night walks. That said, I don't voluntarily wander into particularly notorious areas either. It is as safe as you want to make it, with a pinch of luck tossed in.

Mentality...tis a weird one. The fuck you from shotz isn't exactly wrong, but it depends on where you are again. In general though, people are always in a hurry, it will be cold and distant until you get used to it. They are nice in their own right, just not the kind of behavior that we'd be able to call nice universally.

Costs of living amounts to about your soul, and then some, better summon Mephistopheles fast.

Its very all for one-ish in NY. Also, do not be a red sox fan.

Effing sox fans, it was horrible to be at school that year.

Asking directions will be frowned upon by anyone that lives there, though the tourists are usually friendly enough. Not that it should be necessary to anyone with a brain, streets and avenues are numbered sequentially.

This too depends on location and time, more often than not if you catch people on lunch breaks or whatnot they'll be nice enough. I do my best to point out directions when I can, though I have a born deficiency with that

Some tourists are amazingly brave too, I've had a Japanese backpacker come up to me once and inquire for directions in Japanese (I am Chinese at that). You'd figure people would not dare wandering around without at least a little command of the language here, lol.

Southern German towns have a much better pace and quality of life than urban America. Culturally and socially you're better off here.

If you have always been living in a large city, then Manhattan's cost of living will not seem absurdly high...

I've lived here for 13 years (my whole life) and I love it. The lifestyle is pretty different - no more driving 5 miles to the nearest store or driving to school. The brilliance of the huge city is how easily everything is accessed - you have almost every type of store, restaurant, etc relatively close by. Especially in Manhattan, the subway systems and walking can get you pretty much anywhere you want - I know many families who manage fine living in the city without a car and rarely have to take cabs due to excellent transportation.

Criminality isn't that bad - there are so many people, getting abandoned walking on your way home or caught in a dark alley is pretty unlikely, although that heavily depends on where in the city you live.

Mentality... Everyone's always in a rush to get places and tries to be as quick as possible - but once you get used to it, this manner isn't bad at all. New Yorkers recognize an emergency when they see one, and are very smart on the streets - which can be bad-mannered at times. You'll have to adapt and not be too used to lazy country life (not sure where you're from) to get around. The last line of Gene's first post really sums it up nicely ^^

Costs of living and common goods are very high, but working wages are also higher compared to other places. I would assume you should save up some money or try to figure out job situation beforehand but I have no idea since I'm only 13 D:... note many people live just outside the city (NJ usually) and commute for work, as New Jersey has pretty low living cost comparitively.

Any other specific questions, go ahead and PM me - I'll try and give you a good answer or ask my parents if needed

MMM YESSS NYCCCC

Lifestyle - Awesome. Best shit ever
Criminality - I lived in harlem and let me tell you all those stories of being violated by a broomstick is not entirely accurate. I've met some of the coolest people in Harlem.
Mentality - To be totally honest, I've never met a person from NY who was a total ass (okay maybe except my collegues). However in mornings and shit, people are busy as hell. When people are busy, they do not care. A Stranger Not Caring =/= Rude.
Costs of living - Like everybody said. It costs your soul. I lived in north manhattan, and i got a small small ass room which was literally like 5 by 12 yards (with bathroom/shower stall) and I had to pay $1100 a month. No heating but electricity/water was free!

Which part of Harlem? Morningside Heights was awfully close to Harlem, no real problem with Harlem here though. East Harlem on the other hand is much more intimidating.

seriously though, you ask a hundred new yorkers how they feel about NYC, you'll get a HUNDRED different answers. We live in the most eclectic piece of land I swear. You walk 20 blocks up and down, you'll pass by three COMPLETELY different neighborhoods, lifestyles, criminalities, mentalities and costs of living.

Only way to know your worthy of NYC is to try it. You'll either love it or run like Mase did to Atlanta.

Ecael went to CU?

I can second that; but you might have problems communicating with English overe here if you're not living in a city with a university

I don't get the people saying people are unfriendly in terms of giving out directions. The people I've asked have always given me fair responses / I never mind helping out either.

People who walk slowly are 3904823x more annoying imo =/
