Joking aside, if Maru isn't GOAT, then what is a GOAT? 4 GSL in a row isn't enough for people? People considered MVP goat with way less.

If he can keep up this form through the end of year, and Serral doesn't keep on winning everything, then he has a shot. So far, it's looking good with him grabbing his 4th straight GSL while Serral lost WCS to Reynor. Otherwise, Maru risks being overshadowed during his own peak era (e.g., Jaedong to Flash) How was he overshadowed by Serral? Maru won 3 top tourneys (4 if we want to count WESG where he actually totally crushed Serral) and Serral won 2. Serral looked more dominating overall but in terms of achievements Maru clearly had a better year.

Jk, I don't care. As for Maru beeing the GOAT, I think he still misses a few weekender to be the clear GOAT. While it's very true that he had a lot less opportunity to play in weekender than most he still played a good number of them, and has so far failled to have a amazing string of results in them He has played in 26 weekender in his careers, with "only" 3 finals and a single win. His only win came from WESG and on of his finals wich while very hard to qualify for in Korea, basicly have the lineup of a HSC, with essentially 1 or 2 matches with elite players.(altought his 2018 run was done in very impressive fashon remenissing of a TaeJa) His best result outside of his WESG win, is probably his IEM Tapei final, but he did failled to win it in the end. His overall results in weekender are far from bad of course, but there still seems to be something missing from his legacy. Outside of GSL, he dosen't seems to have these day where everything goes right and he can just cleave throught a bracket the way other great weekender player like TaeJa, INno or Zest.

It was a shame for us viewers that Proleague ended, also for Maru in a sense, as he was a monster in that too. His weekend results are still good for basically any top tier player really, consistency wise if not title wise. if he kept up his Proleague form, showed his current GSL form I don’t think he’d even need those weekenders at all. Current paucity of not just tournaments but big sample sizes of form are a double-edged sword, they can really amplify a hot streak, but also any kind of slump as well. $o$ had those sick really clutch big tournament wins, kind of added to his charm that he wasn’t some dominant player overall, but we had enough other results to actually judge that on. IMO to be a basically undisputed GOAT you need a crazy level of dominance, best you can hope for without is to be part of that conversation. So a Wayne Gretsky, a Don Bradman in cricket or Jahangir Khan in squash or folks like that.

It's such a glaring weakness for someone aiming for that title. Well, besides his 4 consecutive GSL wins he also has a SSL and a WCS Korea title, both of which - outside of the name - are effectively the same as a GSL (prize pool, competition). On top of that he also won WESG once, which may be a comparetively weak tournament, but still required him to go through the gruelling Korea qualifier. As a cherry on top, he is also the highest earning sc2 player ever, so it is not like he only has those 4 consecutive GSL titles. p.s. And apparently he also has an OSL win...

Especially as qualifiers are rarely ones where much prep is possible.

OSL and WCS Korea were the same tournament. (dunno if it was ironic)

If Maru won Blizzcon he'd be GOAT and imo the 1st SC2 Bonjwa, if Maru wins one more GSL in next two, I'd consider that Bonjwa too, some weekender tournament would solidify that international dominance too though.

It's a bit of an unfair comparison to pros who are doing this all by themselves. Inno for example, cited his reason for leaving Acer and rejoining SKT1 as because he did not perform as well without the rigor and guidance of a Kespa team. He found himself getting lazy.
