The point is, when you're number 1, humility is the best way to toot your horn. In articles in scientific journals, the earlier an author's name is listed, the more important he is, EXCEPT that the really important people put their names last. It's saying, "I'm so renowned that I don't need to list myself as first author: everyone knows who I am anyway." as far as peer-reviewed journal articles go, it has more to do with precedence and standards than whatever you just said. it is understood that the last listed author is the primary investigator, or basically the professor or research group head that is in charge. on the other hand, the first listed author is actually the primary author, who has written the bulk of the paper or contributed the most to the work. so i guess if by "importance" you meant everything i just said, then ok. and as far as Mondragon's overstated humility, i think one reason may be the language barrier; he genuinely wants to be modest, but does not know how to express himself in the most fashionable manner with all the accepted nuances of english writing

Actually the last author is usually the PI who just puts his name on everything that comes out of his lab. Authors are usually written in order of contribution to the research, not by importance. "If they made it to this round, they must deserve it." It's the FBH effect. When you BM, it provides a bit of fun, but (almost) everyone hates you for it after.

It's hard to think bad of him when you kinda imagine that background, however his comments are an hard challenge to people nerves T_T Are you throwing out insults and trying to cover it up as if you care about idras well being with the psychology angle? More balls next time plz.

As for the scientific journals, here's a quote I just found by Googling "last author" journal, and then I'll drop it, since it was only an example: Following informal practices in the biomedical sciences, the last author often gets as much credit as the first author, because he or she is assumed to be the driving force, both intellectually and financially, behind the research. -PLoS

No actually I was trying to find a decent reason behind his behaviour. Couldn't think of anything else seriously.

No one actually takes Mondragon seriously when he says it's just luck, but this way, people talk about his humility as well. (It's the same way with Roger Federer.) Ok, fair enough. I think he does know that he is a talented player and its not just "luck" that is enabling him to beat other top players -- but #1, I do not think hes specifically saying that just because hes hoping people will point out how modest he is/make himself look good. It has been his policy in every interview, written or spoken (he has a couple on youtube with WCG guys), to be very good mannered and I find it hard to believe its all part of a secret craving for attention. And #2, he has the ability to be blunt as well, for example saying that Gosia simply had to make a huge micro error for him to win, basically laying out the truth, but also going on to say that Gosia is very skilled and should go far in the tournament, so still very mannered. Its also worth noting that despite it seeming obvious that the best way to show your skill and win support is to be humble and show it on the game and not in interviews, some people still insult others, predict their own victories, and give no thought to sportsmanship. So giving Mondi a bit of acknowledgement for never going to that level -- for whatever reason, or however good it makes him look -- shouldnt be considered a bad thing.

I like comments like these because he immediately has to put up or shut up (though he could do neither I suppose), and the matches become more exciting because he's put his balls on the line. Idra fighting!.. but White-Ra winning, Idra has Korea now.
